TAKE A SECOND LOOK AT HERMAN CAIN - Just A Minute Radio for Friday 110930

We’ve arrived at the conclusion of another week.

Things are moving now. I’ve heard several reporters and moderators say “It’s too late to enter now.” Speaking of the current election cycle. We’re too far along in it. Well…

I recall traveling to Phoenix to help out the Goldwater for President campaign… which kicked off it’s campaign at a 4th of July Parade Flagstaff, Arizona when the temperature was in the 100’s … I had to buy a straw cowboy hat to keep from being burnt to a crisp on that hot summer day.

That was early July… the voting that year was I think on the 4th of November… I’m too lazy to look it up… and my sieve-like memory can’t pin it down. It had to be a Tuesday. (J)

Some of us from the Milliken companies had been ‘loaned’ to the campaign effort – but even at that, I probably sat around most of the rest of July after the Convention in the SF Cow Palace concluded and Goldwater had given his speech with the famous phrase in it – that still gets quoted today.  Then several weeks went by before I relocated in Washington – coming home only on every other weekend if we weren’t traveling. He didn’t campaign on Sundays PTL.

So why now does it take two years to get ready and run etc. ?  Well… there’s a LOT more money to be raised… and a LOT more people to be hired and supervised… and in those days of 1964 we were just barely getting TV right and it was still black and white.

An index is – The campaign budget was about 13 million including charter of a 727 – which was brand new then… and another plane sometimes to carry the extra press people.

Thirteen million nowadays probably won’t run a campaign an entire week… and we’ve got 13+ months to go?  That’s why we have so many problems with it all IMO…Well… I don’t run those things (and didn’t then either) but we sure spent a lot less money – which was worth more!

No need to dig up all the old days… but sometimes it’s instructive to remember.  And I remember… I’m supposed to take all the meds I do twice a day and go to bed. Otherwise I keep nodding off during the day. (J)

So…Enjoy reading about “Bro. Cain.”  Almost all the news media have ‘woken’ up to the fact he *CAN* be a serious candidate… especially since he got more votes last week than Perry or Romney *combined*!  Well… it happens. It’ll probably take quite a few months to untangle this bird’s nest after all.  Maybe we just *think* we’re moving faster these days… it’s like being caught in a tornado… or something.  See you next week.  Get up early enough to get to Sunday School… It’ll do you good!

Cordially, IN HIM

“JUST A MINUTE”

TAKE A SECOND LOOK AT HERMAN CAIN

Just a Minute: Can Herman Cain win? He tells Dan Henninger of the Wall St. Journal he thinks he can get at least a third of the black vote – plus -- after the Florida straw poll, his campaign coffers are growing heavier.

Consistently described as a candidate‘who can’t win’ he got more votes in the Orlando straw poll than Romney and Perry combined, and though he’s never held elected office his plain-spoken, easy to understand delivery has captured national recognition.

Cain is a chauffeur’s son and says his father “gave him a sense of pride” – and both Coke-cola and Pillsbury entrusted him with ‘rescue’ tasks in the food world – leading in 1996 to heading up the National Restaurant Association till 1999.

To increase expertise in foreign policy, he’s traveled to Europe visiting with both our military and diplomats demonstrating a quick grasp of leadership there, causing Henninger to comment, “He’s at least twice identified the causes of a large failing enterprise, designed goals, achieved them, and by all accounts inspired the people he was supposed to lead.” Henninger concludes: “Herman Cain is a credible candidate… he deserves a serious look.”                    <> I’m Jack Buttram.
