THE MAN BEHIND THE BULLS EYE - Just a Minute Radio for Monday 11-30-09

Well… a very good day to you –

So glad you joined us for this little verbal stroll in the park. It’s one I enjoy very much and I hope it’s the same for you.

Today we’re looking at the happenings at a fiscal responsibility hearing in the House of Representatives last week. The Star witness was Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner – yes the same one who had to get someone to help him with his taxes and has seemed at times to be like a deer caught in the headlights.

Little more than a week ago it was Democrat Congressman Peter DeFazio – originally from Massachusetts and in Congress since 1986 – who was not afraid to call for the Treasury’s top man to resign. What turned out even more strange was the absolute silence from the White House.  Here is their point man carrying water into at lease a semi-hostile environment and arguing Mr. Obama’s case but who doesn’t elicit one syllable of support from the White Mansion on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Was it a case of having picked out a fall guy to “throw under the bus” and get some kind of relief from these Democrat attacks, or did the WH simply not take stock of the verbal beating Mr. Geithner got from Mr. DeFazio? Perhaps a little of both – but you certainly don’t call forth a wave of volunteers to carry your water for you when you leave their bloody body on the battlefield without a shred of apparent support.

The trouble is – according to the WSJ – that the White House has opened up not only a second front in its difficulty with capitol hill, but it’s rather careless about tending to its wounded. This past week saw Katie Couric of CBS introduce a story wondering if the ‘honeymoon is over’ and rattling the iron fence over on the White House Lawn.  Add to that the ankle-biting stories of two reality show contestants slithering past the Secret Service in order to shake Obama’s hand… only to stir up a non-story in the Beltway sensitive press… and you get the idea last week wasn’t such a good week for the Obama Administration.  The China trip has gained tepid supporters… and there are speed bumps in the road ahead this week. Peggy Noonan thinks detracting “iconic photos” show up about this time in a new presidency (See Jimmy Carter and/or Jerry Ford) and set the tone of news coverage for the coming days. I suppose we shall see – or maybe not. (J)

“JUST A MINUTE”

THE MAN BEHIND THE BULL’S EYE

Just A MinuteTreasury Secretary, Timothy Geithner, just lies there.  Rep. Peter DeFazio – Oregon Democrat says he should resign!  No word from The President?  Does throwing Mr. Geithner under the bus cut unemployment?

Wall Street Journal says Democrats just don’t get it. They fail to see policy mistakes don’t exist in a vacuum.  Congress and the President stack up stark consequences directly hooked to economic policy – and then wonder what’s going wrong?

Pilot’s learn if you’re going to fly in icy weather in darkness with low fuel and a faulty airplane you’ve hugely increased probability of an air crash.  When investors in a free market see legislation, unread, thousands of pages affecting seventeen percent of the economy gets rushed through, then topped off with a flood of poorly vetted mortgage applicants – they reach for the parachutes.

Add the Copenhagen climate summit, a falling dollar, gyrations in commodity prices, more income tax to pay for Afghanistan, and a union “Card Check” bill, and you’ve got a boiler-plated, cast iron, economic catastrophy!

HE WAS A HUMBLE SERVANT OF THE LORD -- Just A Minute Radio for November 27th 2009

Hello again… It’s FRIDAY – and we have a wonderful ‘homegoing’ story as the subject of today’s program.

Many listeners know, or at least know of, Dr. John Dreisbach, medical missionary to Africa and other lands, who along with their family, have devoted themselves to bringing the healing Gospel as well as physical healing to as many locations and ministries as possible.  What isn’t so well known is the humility exhibited by Dr. John, his wife Betty and their children. Actually, they have many accomplishments to point to… But Dr. John always wanted attention to go to the Gospel and not to him or his family.

Barbara and I had the good fortune to portray their mission work in the southern Sahara desert where they ministered, trying to reach the “Blue Men of the Desert” as a tribe of nomads were called in the borderlands of the Niger.  Achieving some success with a clinic which touched the tribal people of that area, Dr. John and his wife, – a nurse – performed surgeries on some afflicted by leprosy and other debilitating conditions, as well as attending to other medical needs in rather extraordinary and primitive conditions. It’s all in an hour-long film available at the BJU bookstore called “Beyond the Night.” If you see it, you’ll be surprised to see this film depicting Africa, that was almost totally shot on the Unusual Film soundstage right here in Greenville.

The truly amazing thing is the reaction I’ve heard from missionaries in Africa and other difficult places, to seeing the film and the difficulties overcome in places hostile to the proclamation of the Gospel.  The film is based on true events and the Dreisbach’s were consultants to its shooting as directed by Dr. Katherine Stenholm of Unusual Films. It was done in the days before computers – which are used now to fill in unusual locations – were common.

Mainly however, the film demonstrates the faithfulness of the Dreisbach’s and their efforts to reach the unreached. It’s not out of date with some of the issues at work in our nation today and I think you would be benefitted as well as challenged if you’ve not seen it.

In any case, Dr. John and Betty are true saints, now with the Lord, who are worthy examples of faithful and humble servants in difficult places.

Thanks for listening and tuning in.

            Cordially, IN HIM

“JUST AMINUTE”

HE WAS A HUMBLE SERVANT OF THE LORD

JUST A MINUTE: Today, JUST A MINUTE, is devoted to the memory of Dr. John Dreisbach, now with the Lord.  John and Betty, dear personal friends, deflected all attention away from themselves and toward the Lord.  They and  their daughter Ann, were guests with us often in our Greenville home.

Affectionately known as Dr. John, who would have been 88 December 23rd, he refused leukemia treatment to meet his Lord sooner.

Their family served many years in Africa attempting to touch unreached people groups in very difficult places, enduring much hardship and opposition from government officials opposed to their humanitarian work, choosing to maintain government control over meeting the needs of their people. That story is told in a BJU film called BEYOND THE NIGHT, demonstrating difficulties encountered when rulers feel threatened by the Gospel.

John and Betty were among the most selfless people we’ve ever known.  Barbara and I count it a wonderful privilege to have encountered them and been associated with their work for the Lord.

WHO'S GOT THE MULLIGAN? - Just A Minute Radio for Wednesday 11-25-09

            Howdy – Today it’s a golf/basketball lesson.

I was a bit wonderstruck when looking at Tuesday’s WSJ… there on the front page … jumping inside to A-17 I think – was a golf story.  Apparently somebody in the WH press corps has been keeping track of the ‘secret’ [not to say surreptitious] matter of Barack Obama’s miserable golf game.

To read the story is to find out he took up golf – in addition to his normal sports effort of basketball at which he seems to have some ability due to his height and practice – but so far is nowhere close to giving Tiger Woods anything to worry about. His handicap (and I’m not a golfer so my data could be wrong) is speculated to be in the range of 20 or so… putting him in the ‘average’ duffer box.

Now it doesn’t take a lot of watching to know Mr. Obama doesn’t want to be ‘average’ in anything.

So apparently although he took up golf when he was a State Senator in Illinois, and has played far more during his time in office so far than George Bush played in his whole two terms (according to one of the White House Press Corps who keeps track of such things) he doesn’t want a lot of witnesses.  The scene of his flailing away to get out of a sand trap was  written up quite graphically on the front page of the Journal.  Most recently he kept a whole bus load of reporters waiting  while his considerable entourage trailed him on one of the military bases where he plays away too many public eyes.

One unwilling witness said his foursome waited a length of time in which they would have played three holes – for the Obama crew to play one. He’s hoping not to get stuck on that course again.

Reading it, I had a sense of unbelief.  Here’s the leader of the free world worried he may be seen in a slightly unfavorable light. Bush apparently gave up golf after 9/11 and troops being deployed… thinking it wasn’t seemly to be playing while guys are dying; -- He’s now resumed his interest according to the Journal story. It isn’t really impressive to me that the President hand-picks a general to command the Afghanistan campaign… then takes forever to send the resources to do the job.  It all has the flavor of appearance rather than substance… and he looks like he doesn’t want to do what needs to be done.  Well… it’s not my job to judge.

OK… on to more substantive things… like turkey… and family – and doing what we need to be doing to make America strive for greatness again rather than building castles in the reputational air. God bless you at this Family time. I pray you have a wonderful Thanksgiving… and may you desire to be thankful to the Lord this season.

BETTER OR WORSE THAN 1929? -- Just A Minute Radio for Monday 11-23-09

Good Morning – or whatever it is wherever you are…

We had a rather raw weekend… well, that’s not so. Saturday was OK…sunny and warm enough for fall most of the day here and not too much wind.  But it *was* raw on Sunday… cool, sometimes hard rain and a bit of wind with the winter hint in it.  So… we’re getting to the weather part of winter… which in these later years has not been so cold as the stories my Aunties used to tell about being farm kids commandeering a ladder to go “sledding” down the pasture hill – no steering, no brakes…just crazy, country kids having a big time.

Like they say, if you want a change in the weather here in the upstate… just wait about 15 minutes. – I really don’t know WHO it is in that sentence … but he’s probably outdated by about half a century.  My second oldest grandson, Ian, and his fiancee’ did the dirty work in the fall chore of cleaning out the gutters.  Our house sits in the middle of something like 17 major trees on the lot that also have a LOT of leaves to leave to the ground.  I’ve never been big on raking leaves… and my dislike of it has grown with the years.  A few years back I tried ‘raking’ with a blower… it wasn’t a professional grade machine… So I simply succeeded in confirming my aversion to raking leaves or trying to get rid of them in any fashion that doesn’t involve spending $3000 + dollars on a John Deere with a bagger.  (And even then… where would I dump ‘em?)

The gutter-cleaning adds back-icing to the cake.  My wife and children forbid me from climbing up on the roof. I guess I *would* chance it maybe out of sheer frustration.  We don’t have the spare dough to have whatever the latest craze is in gutter covers installed.  Besides… I think it would lead to several thousands in new gutters downspouts and more cleaning… It’s like that “Old Hound Dog” bayin’ at the moon ballad… ‘Life gets tedious – don’t it?’ I reckon it does… especially when you’re pinching Social Security pennies.

But maybe today’ll be a sunny day and I’ll get over it – like a passing cloud. (J)

I pray for you to have a happy non-tedious say. Let’s make this Thanksgiving week… we’ve got too much to be thankful for to cram it into just one day!

“JUST AMINUTE”

BETTER OR WORSE THAN 1929?

JUST A MINUTE: Stock market investors are sitting on the sidelines wonder just when – or if – the market will recover as predicted; two Republican Congressmen – Jeb Hensarling of Texas and Paul Ryan of Wisconsin – say a weak recovery is more likely than a strong one.  Why?  --

First – there’s UNEMPLOYMENT – which is presently either at 10.2 or 10.4 nationally but more likely something like 15 percent nationwide and with South Carolina ranks number two for joblessness. Also:

Exhibit A – the so-called stimulus is double the size of FDR’s when adjusted for GDP (Gross Domestic Product).

Exhibit B – Bad TAX POLICY.  The tax cuts of 2001 – 2003 are long gone with this Democrat congress.

Exhibit C – Bailing out GM & Chrysler has messed up decades of bankruptcy law – so small business (major source of new jobs) is hesitant to add jobs.

Finally, non-defense spending will hit a 12 percent increase with 43 cents of every dollar to be borrowed.

Plainly: to wipe out sound economic policy means you wipe out successful results.  At this rate, it’s going to be a long, hard slog to recovery.

WOULD YOU RULE OUT A PALIN-BECK TICKET? - Just A Minute Radio for Friday Nov. 20th 2009

            Howdy Folks – IT’S FRIDAY!

The bloom seems to be off the rose – although there’s a lot of autumn color still around in isolated spots.  But my yard is knee-deep in brown leaves.  I’m absolutely astonished at the brilliance of the little Japanese maple that has mostly scarlet leaves – but several branches on the side closest to the house are a beautiful, and a very intense yellow – remarkable!

Yellow seems to have several present applications – like to those who are awaiting opportunity to Impose their will on the rest of us Saturday night when the Democrat majority in the Senate plan to saddle the American taxpayer with an extra  trillion dollars of debt unwanted and unappreciated by a majority of American taxpayers.  At least that’s what all the major polls say from Applebaum to Zukerman.

I can’t appreciate where those Senators and House members work up the chutzpa to impose so much debt on our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Oh, yeah, I know, it’s being done in the name of doing good for those who don’t have the sense (or the money) to do it for themselves.  But it’s just another giant step along the path of nanny-government – and I’m too old and presently disgusted for that.

Well if you are hankering for a bit of news that shows we’re progressing, it happens that on this day the final ride of the Pony Express concluded in 1861.  See, everybody needs a bit of good news.  (J)  Have a great weekend.

WOULD YOU RULE OUT A PALIN-BECK TICKET?

JUST A MINUTENow that Sarah Palin’s record-breaking book has hit the stores – gab has begun about various combinations for 2012, or 2016.  She’s has been on various talk shows and certain quotes from a Newsmax interview generated stories about her future.

Mrs. Palin herself stresses she’s not seriously considering anything at this time – but did admit she has admiration for Glenn Beck and the charge he’s leading. The exact quotes are, “Glenn Beck is someone she has (quote)great respect for’ and is one who (quote)calls it like he sees it.’

There’s also talk about a Palin-Cheney ticket – which perhaps causes Chris Matthews seek a quick jaunt to the Emergency Room – and possibly revs up liberals who feel confident such a ticket would be easily defeated in any foreseeable contest.  For my part – I think it’s demented – (Apologies to Senator Jim) to be speculating about such things which has so many variable factors.

You’d have better odds picking a year for the Chicago Cubs to win the World Series.

TWO AND A HALF CHEERS FOR THE HOME TEAM -- Just a Minute Radio for Wednesday 18th, 2009

G’day Mate… says the Australian… Keeps down  the unnecessary words of mornin’ or afternoon.

With all the poisonous pestilence in the air it’s a wonder that we’re not a silent planet – yet!  Oh I’m not referring to cars or jets or even flatuous bovines.  It’s the amount of hot-air expended in Washington daily from Capitol Hill, the White House, the State Department – and even the Pentagon.

Every weekday I get a long press release about someone doing something at NIH – National Institutes of Health.  I’m not against progress… but if I were a gambling man, I’d win steak dinners betting there’s at least 20 people involved in putting out that press release, and in every similar shop like it in the District.

I used to work in the media relations department of different Senate offices. (Only one at a time.) And though today they are called media departments… in my day I *was*  the media department… Oh I forgot I didn’t have a staff to look after… I had a third of a secretary typist, or some similar arrangement and government was a lot smaller… but probably more crowded.

Government needs no fertilizer to expand – like Kudzu – (the trash vine that grows prodigiously in most areas south of the Mason-Dixon line.) It just expands and takes over the place.  It chokes out more productive agriculture and generally becomes a deep-rooted, extremely hard to get rid of, pesky plant.  Introduced into America by an international agricultural fair, it became a pesky pest of the plant world.  Yes it did control erosion in the Deep South – but almost to the eradication of everything else.  The insect pest was the boll weevil – which killed off “King Cotton.

It’s just amazing to see how well we grow the things we don’t want like Kudzu or more hot air speeches from well-meaning environmentalists – or money-growers like Al Gore.  I can’t get corn or tomatoes to grow without a lot of work – but let me turn my back 30 seconds in the summer and the yard grows up and fills itself automatically with tournament class golf burrs. Thanks for giving me the idea.

Well… got to go… Morpheous sends his insisting call. I’ll continue with you on Friday.

THINGS WE *KNOW* THAT AIN'T SO -- For Just a Minute Radio Monday 11-16-09

Howdy… Yep we’re back OK… everything run OK while I’m gone?…better than usual… you say? – Hmmm??

As a matter of fact it *wasn’t* really a Florida vacation… just a trip for some necessary paperwork… and contacts.  Sometimes you can’t see the forest for the trees… especially if they’ve been made into paper. (J)

Did you enjoy the couple of day free from politics?  I see they’ve taken it up again since we came back anyway.  It’s a long drive down to S. Florida… and if you’re not down by the beach… well let’s just say I enjoyed it more when I could just fly over it rather than drive. No we’re not movin’ off the Caroliner Line… We’re movin’ thangs fer sumbody else.  [Who said that?]

My wife says women are better suited to handling the trauma of moving than men are.  Do you agree? … I’d like to hear your opinion.  Maybe I could get out of … no… I’d better not.  She can’t lift heavy things.  But then neither can I.  So… I guess we make a perfect team.

How about Friday the 13th… was that fun?  We did spend an inordinate amount of time at a funeral home and visiting a burial ground… but we’ll get over it ok (J) I think!

One more bit of useless information you’ll want to file away – from the Old Farmer’s Almanac… Saturday 20 years ago – the first caboosless [is that a real word?] freight train on the Canadian Pacific Railroad left Winnipeg bound for Thunder Bay – that was back in 1989 – See how time flies – or in this case runs on the rapid rails.

Ours is up for today… see you Wednesday at the Bait Shop and Sushi Bar on th’ Caroliner Line… I’m sure the folks have things to keep you up to date.

 “JUST A MINUTE”

THINGS WE KNOW THAT “AIN’T SO”

Just A Minute – George Will’s Sunday column in the Washington Post carried the headline, “An Image Evaporates.”  It hits the mark ‘though the column writer doesn’t usually write the headline.

Will points to a widely circulated photo of a soldier, fatally wounded.  It’s 1936 and the Spanish “Civil War” – a precursor to World War One.  Controversy has questioned the photo’s authenticity for decades.  Was it real?  Was it staged?

What I’m going to say is, the headline on the Post’s column speaks more truth than the column itself.  *I* thought the column was about the President’s melting image in the heat of today’s reality.  Frankly, I do believe it inadvertently catches the truthful moment of what’s happening.

Mr. Obama is still campaigning – nobody’s been able to crack the Oval Office isolation to inform him it’s Presidential time!  Get off the dime.  Support the troops on the ground in Afghanistan -- cancel your twice-a-week Air Force One reservation.  Mr. President – it’s time to be a leader, last year’s popularity contest is over.
