THE MAN BEHIND THE BULLS EYE - Just a Minute Radio for Monday 11-30-09

Well… a very good day to you –

So glad you joined us for this little verbal stroll in the park. It’s one I enjoy very much and I hope it’s the same for you.

Today we’re looking at the happenings at a fiscal responsibility hearing in the House of Representatives last week. The Star witness was Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner – yes the same one who had to get someone to help him with his taxes and has seemed at times to be like a deer caught in the headlights.

Little more than a week ago it was Democrat Congressman Peter DeFazio – originally from Massachusetts and in Congress since 1986 – who was not afraid to call for the Treasury’s top man to resign. What turned out even more strange was the absolute silence from the White House.  Here is their point man carrying water into at lease a semi-hostile environment and arguing Mr. Obama’s case but who doesn’t elicit one syllable of support from the White Mansion on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Was it a case of having picked out a fall guy to “throw under the bus” and get some kind of relief from these Democrat attacks, or did the WH simply not take stock of the verbal beating Mr. Geithner got from Mr. DeFazio? Perhaps a little of both – but you certainly don’t call forth a wave of volunteers to carry your water for you when you leave their bloody body on the battlefield without a shred of apparent support.

The trouble is – according to the WSJ – that the White House has opened up not only a second front in its difficulty with capitol hill, but it’s rather careless about tending to its wounded. This past week saw Katie Couric of CBS introduce a story wondering if the ‘honeymoon is over’ and rattling the iron fence over on the White House Lawn.  Add to that the ankle-biting stories of two reality show contestants slithering past the Secret Service in order to shake Obama’s hand… only to stir up a non-story in the Beltway sensitive press… and you get the idea last week wasn’t such a good week for the Obama Administration.  The China trip has gained tepid supporters… and there are speed bumps in the road ahead this week. Peggy Noonan thinks detracting “iconic photos” show up about this time in a new presidency (See Jimmy Carter and/or Jerry Ford) and set the tone of news coverage for the coming days. I suppose we shall see – or maybe not. (J)

“JUST A MINUTE”

THE MAN BEHIND THE BULL’S EYE

Just A MinuteTreasury Secretary, Timothy Geithner, just lies there.  Rep. Peter DeFazio – Oregon Democrat says he should resign!  No word from The President?  Does throwing Mr. Geithner under the bus cut unemployment?

Wall Street Journal says Democrats just don’t get it. They fail to see policy mistakes don’t exist in a vacuum.  Congress and the President stack up stark consequences directly hooked to economic policy – and then wonder what’s going wrong?

Pilot’s learn if you’re going to fly in icy weather in darkness with low fuel and a faulty airplane you’ve hugely increased probability of an air crash.  When investors in a free market see legislation, unread, thousands of pages affecting seventeen percent of the economy gets rushed through, then topped off with a flood of poorly vetted mortgage applicants – they reach for the parachutes.

Add the Copenhagen climate summit, a falling dollar, gyrations in commodity prices, more income tax to pay for Afghanistan, and a union “Card Check” bill, and you’ve got a boiler-plated, cast iron, economic catastrophy!
