THOSE WHO *WILL* NOT SEE! - Just a Minute - Radio for Monday June 29, 2009

Howdy on another *fully* hot week of Summer –

The Old Farmer’s Almanac… says we’re going to be 3 degrees above average for the first eight days in June… and have about 3.5 inches of rain… which so far is being good for the lawns and the gardens…as well as filling up the lakes. However… they say it’ll be a much longer time recovering the groundwater level that’s been depleted here in the upstate by something approaching a seven year drought.  So the sound of the thunder isn’t so intimidating…and the showers are welcome.

Last week…a week that was… we’d just as soon not have another like that thanks but no thanks. It’s about time we (at least in my party) got some breaks in the news. But…you can’t order up a banana split on the Facebook. [I still am too much of a neophyte to do much with it… sorry. I guess I’m technologically challenged (J) We’ll see how that symbol comes out.

Meantime the Summer draws on apace… and what’s ahead in July and August – if it’s like it has been in the summers since I’ve been coming here as a little kid in short pants – these are HOT times. Best to sit out under the tall oaks with a cardboard church fan and keep your own breeze a-blowin’.

The sun is headed north…the days this week are about  14 hours and 23 minutes long… and the last time we saw one that long was June 15th -- *before* the summer solstice. The length of days changes very slowly now…Gets’ more rapid around the equinox time… and slows again in mid – December… can you feel those cooling breezes blow?

Why so much news out of the Almanac. It’s just a whole lot better than listening to the irritating news on the TV or radio… I’m also working on lowering Blood Pressure… and news is no help. Hope you have a lovely day in a cool place and Lord willing we’ll talk with you again on Wednesday.

            Cordially, IN HIM

“JUST A MINUTE”

THOSE WHO WILL NOT SEE

JUST A MINUTE – The Wall Street Journal ran another op ed piece about evolution – reprinting some of the more stupid assertions. I think - you ought to hear something weighty on the other side.

For instance, here’s Darwin writing just shortly after the Origin of the Species: “The case at the present time must remain inexplicable, and may be truly urged as a valid argument against the views here entertained.”  He was referring to a gross lack in the Cambrian Explosion -- a period in the fossil record rich in fossils but totally devoid of intermediate indications of species change. But the Darwinian Theory requires such evidence to prove its validity. Thus far – for 125 years or so now -- none can be found.

Darwin knew of this problem -- it was troubling then and still is today, such recognized paleontologists as Stephen J. Gould, call the lack of transitional fossils the “trade secret” of the profession. The case for Darwin is far from airtight as a visit to any library will confirm. Possibly the Wall Street Journal would be better off leaving it alone.

WHAT'S HAPPENED TO HUMILITY? - Just A Minute Radio for Friday 06-26-09

Howdy on a Friday…

Ain’t you glad every week’s not like this one. The Columbia State had a record breaking number of hits on their website. Seems the whole nation was focused on South Carolina – for a poor reason.

No sense in going over the whole thing again. It has been *endlessly* chewed over and over and over by the news nets and the MSM… I read Glenn Beck’s transcript yesterday and he seems positively addled. Below you can read the text of the Bible verse I quote today on the radio commentary. It’s super-accurate in the ESV which I think is an excellent study Bible and uses the words rivalry, conceit and significant that make the old KJV words that are very familiar and because of that sort of ‘rounded off’ to where they are not so *abrasive* as I’m sure the Apostle Paul intended for them to be. He was trying to *warn* those first Christians he visited in Europe not to be SELFISH.  That’s what lies at the root of most of the problems we struggle with today.

A husband does things he, himself characterizes as selfish and hurtful. Elected officials do amazingly stupid and risky things for reasons observers can’t fathom – they judge someone has at least for a time taken leave of ‘good sense.’ And I’m not just pointing fingers… I admit to having stumbled down those same paths and have caused hurts and bruises to others – not just myself. Truth be told – we all suffer from the curse since the Garden of Eden – and need to be quick to beg the Lord’s forgiveness.

Probably one of the most quoted verses among really believing Christians who are trying to follow the Lord is !st John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Such a life-saver! How often we need to grab hold.

Well… I’ll climb down now. I pray you have a blessed and productive and healing weekend. Most likely you, like the rest of us, need it.

“JUST A MINUTE”

WHAT’S HAPPENED TO HUMILITY?

JUST A MINUTE – May I quote from the English Standard Version of the Bible – “Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.”  It’s from St. Paul’s letter to the church at Philippi – the first group of Christians he visited in Europe, and he was warning them against selfishness, strife – and an old English word in the King James Version – “vainglory.”

It were well if that word could be emblazoned before the eyes of anyone seeking power over anyone else. It epitomizes what too often happens when people get power anywhere, Congress, City Council, Water District, -- Marriage!  vainglory is just another word for selfishness. I have something you don’t have.” Vainglory breaks up marriages, destroys parent-child relationships, kills self-government. It’s why we have the economic mess we have and hinders the attempts we’re hoping will clear up government problems.

If you have a Bible ponder Philippians Chapter two verse three. You may save a marriage – or a nation.

AIR WE A-GITTIN' MAD, ER AIN'T WE? - Just A Minute Radio for Wednesday 06-24-09:

Howdy right ‘cher in th’ Middle of th’ week…

We’re a-tunin’ in to the conversation over at Earl ‘n’ Lester’s Bait Shop and Sushi Bar  on the Caroliner line… Lots going on in the news world and every body’s chewing it over. I hope you have a chance to listen in.

With the economy in the tank, unemployment rising beyond what the President (or his advisers) thought was a solid limit – and the stock market not knowing what kind of signals the Fed is flashing – everyone seems to be looking over their shoulders.

Monday, I put commentary on the air about Senator Grassley looking like he might be ‘plucked’ out of the ranks of the Senate minority to become a ‘hero’ in the Obama camp by leading an effort to have a ‘public’ health care plan – which would of course bear his name in at least half the title – as an addition to his Senate Heritage. He’s often said what a good friend Arlen Specter is – the RINO Republican who switched sides now that it looks like he can’t win a Pennsylvania GOP Primary next year and returned to the Democrat party where he started his political career many years ago. So… Senator Grassley – looking at toughening opposition possibly getting prepared to challenge him in 2012 may well be deciding to put a little political capital in the bank and see if he can’t secure his place in history by being a White Knight to save the Obama faltering health plan. But my guesstimate raised not a peep of comment.

It’s not sure how that will play with Senator Ted Kennedy who wants it to be HIS legacy… but you can always have a hyphenated plan… How does Kennedy-Grassley Public Health plan sound… Or might it be better Grassley – Kennedy? Anyway… The Washington Post speculates there’s a strong possibility even though Grassley tweeted the President about nightclubbing in Paris while lecturing the Senators about delivering him a health plan on an impossible schedule – it may be just a ‘hiding the ball’ game the Senators are playing.

Oh well… it’s just the health of the nation – both physical and fiscal – they’re playing with. Only this game has stakes that are considerably higher than those at Wimbledon – and touch us all.

CAN BARRY WIN WITH JUST A HAMBURGER? -- Just A Minute Radio for June 22, 2009

            Hello again… it’s Monday…

And we’re off to a good start on the summer. The sun has passed it’s solstice position and is now about 24 hours into its journey to the autumnal equinox… followed by the Winter Solstice…My how wonderfully God has worked these things out so precisely.

There was violence in the streets of Tehran over the weekend. Supposedly yesterday was quiet… but since all the foreign correspondents have been booted out of Iraq we really don’t know – or we have no independent verification. The body count mounted from one to thirteen last time I could count… but I’m suspecting that is not entirely accurate either.

Well… it looks as if this will be the storm before the calm. It will be another big news week…and July will probably be a big news month and then comes August – well then we only have to work with fires, earthquakes, floods, volcanoes and other natural disasters – Congress and the Court will be out of town… so August will be left for “Waterboarding”—Did I say that?  I meant water-skiing!

Since it’s due to be hot today… I need a nap… and you probably do too. Talk with you Wednesday.

“JUST A MINUTE”

CAN BARRY WIN WITH JUST A HAMBURGER?

JUST A MINUTE – The biggest Washington whisper centers on the President plucking Senator  Grassley aside as he left  a White House meeting to gently chide him about being such a tough guy to win over.  By now everyone has heard Grassley calling the President a hammer – while saying he’s no nail!

But the Iowa Ethanol king carefully is laying groundwork for his sixth term in 2012 and while he has angered some talk show hosts and televangelists with threats of investigations he’s presently being carefully stroked by the White House into becoming a hero on health care. That that could derail primary candidates.

The Iowan’s “tough tweet” strategy earned him big stories in the Washington Post over the weekend and even lib-left blogs like Slate – think it would be marvelous to pull Chuck across the aisle since he admits to being good friends with Arlen Specter.

Can the Obama hide the ball through the August recess and pop it out urging a vote before anyone has a chance to read it?  It’s happened before – just ask Chrysler, GM and the bankers.

IS THIS THE KIND OF CHANGE YOU WANT? - Just A Minute Radio 06-19-09

            Howdy … it’s Friday again…

Today’s JUST A MINUTE revisits Philadelphia in 1791 a time of ferment and action.  And we’re back to arguing about very *basic* things like money – and liberty – and choosing… or who’s going to make the choices for us – especially if we’re being cut out of the loop?

Chuck Colson’s organization – Prison Fellowship Ministries – is working on a database project to hand apologetic tools to students, teachers and interested people who want to bring America back to its roots and basic freedoms. One of them is enshrined in the first one of the Bill of Rights [the First Ten Amendments to the Constitution] – it was the lack of these guaranteed freedoms in the Constitution that kept Virginia’s delegate George Mason from signing that document. He felt that strongly about it.

There are people who feel strongly about it today. I suspect you and I are among those believers. The First Amendment particularly protects our religious freedom. Freedom from state interference – and possibly preventing religion from interfering with the functions of the States.

WE need to revisit these freedom sites from time to time in deep contemplation and reflection. It was the intention of the framers. They wanted this document to set forth the freedoms guaranteed under the written Constitution and not be dependent upon the whims of a dictator. Yet it seems more and more our basic freedoms *are* being threatened from that quarter. President Obama’s campaign was keynoted on “CHANGE” – and mostly without pinning down details. That’s why people are getting antsy about what kind of pig they may have bought in a polk. (paper bag)

Think it over this weekend. Pray about it. See what the Lord would have you do. Don’t let me or anyone except your Lord sway you from what you believe is your God-given opportunity and Indeed your *DUTY.*

“JUST A MINUTE”

DO YOU WANT JUST THIS KIND OF CHOICE?

JUST A MINUTE – Chuck Colson broadcasts in his program Breakpoint: “In China, Christians have a choice: Join a government-approved church—which is constantly monitored by the authorities—or join an underground church.”

It turns out in Britain the government – according to the Daily Telegraph – will start next year under the Equity Bill to hire open, practicing homosexuals. Deputy Equities Minster Maria Eagle, says the law would cover “almost all church employees.”  She adds members of faith groups, “have a responsibility” for furthering greater acceptance of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgendered people in society.

What if the church hires a youth pastor and orders him to teach kids about the sinfulness of homosexual behavior? Or suppose a British mosque is ordered to hire a homosexual secretary?

Perhaps we should be reminded the First Amendment was written not so much to protect the government from churches but to protect churches from government. Some of our people might be just as happy to have the government write the sermons.

I KAIN'T B'LEEVE I WATCHED TH' HOLE THANG! - Just A Minute Radio for Wednesday June 17th 2009

HOWDY Everbody….

Hit’s Wednesday and we’re at hump day – half way there and halfway back.

It’s been a showery week here in the foothills. I’m hoping the showers have made their way to the water table – although the experts tell us it’ll take several years to get the groundwater back up to a more normal level. I’ve not heard many gripes from the boat owners or the fishermen and women. In fact I keep reading and hearing about record sized fish – even one humongous Blue-Cat that dwarfed the fellow holding it.

Somehow – as a kid – we never had the action that was sufficient to keep me interested – or fire my imagination on the water. So… I tried but my fishing flame flickered and even with my first grandson, I don’t think I lit a strong enough flame to get him excited. I suppose something like that comes in the genes.

My Dad was an OK fisherman… he knew how to do it – and seemed to enjoy it – although cleaning was a mess from the git-go – and cleaning the few catfish we caught was really troublesome.  But occasionally we got an eel. That was interesting – and in the early days of our small little settlement on the banks of Craig’s Creek in the backwood wilds of Virginia I really enjoyed being there…  Except for the mosquitoes—and ticks. I could take a pass on those as well as Poison Ivy and Poison Oak.

My Mother was a good sport about the whole thing – and having been brought up on an 80 acre farm right here in Greenville County between Mauldin and Simpsonville – there wasn’t much in the backwoods living she hadn’t already encountered and mastered. We even managed to get sunburned on the shady river banks… but we managed to get dirty too… even on the sandy banks.

Good times all right – but you can’t go home again – as Thomas Wolf wrote. It was always like the second popsicle I bought when I had another nickel at recess. The second never measured up to the taste of the first.

Hope you have a great day.

VIEW FROM ACROSS THE POND - Just a Minute Radio for Monday 06-15-

And a very good Monday to you too!....

Today’s JUST A MINUTE is a bit of a history lesson… or standing aside from our own shores we take a look from back about 1830 at America as seen through the eyes of a French Aristocrat.

Alexis de Tocqueville visited America with his friend Gustav Beaumont in May of 1831 and spent about nine months viewing this nation – which was still in its formative years – and experimenting with its growing pains. I’ve not read even portions of his DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA which it took him nine years to write once he got back home.

Generally you get the ‘cherry picked’ comments De Tocqueville recorded… but apparently there are plenty of critical ones too. He thought  Andrew Jackson was just a slight cut above people he saw in our prisons. And he was astonished to see people of all classes shaking hands. Although a close look at the history of America at that time would show it was not really a nation that had developed a classless equality.

In any case the book he and Beaumont produced is recorded as one of the greatest assessments of one culture by another in the literature.

It’s on my list to get and read as much as I can take as soon as I can… [but I have a long list ahead of it.]

We’d probably all be better off if we took a good close look at ourselves, our families, our schools and churches. Pretty hard to get an unbiased opinion though, even in the best of circumstances. France and probably most of Europe thought our experiment in democracy was doomed to failure… and because our ancestors didn’t fail but prospered – albeit not without difficulty and much discussion, not to say disagreement, perhaps Europe has never forgiven us for not fulfilling their prophecy.

In any case I thought a good outside look would do us a bit of good. I hope you share my view.

“JUST A MINUTE”

VIEW FROM ACROSS THE POND

JUST A MINUTEAlexis de Tocqueville arrived in Newport Rhode Island in May 1831 and spent nine months traveling from the East Coast to the Mississippi filling 14 notebooks with observations and interviews with 200 people.

An aristocrat, de Tocqueville was amazed at the ideas of equality in America and astonished to see people of all classes shaking hands. Returning to France he spent nine years writing Democracy in America.

Europeans knew very little about America and many were convinced our Democracy would shortly slide into anarchy. He observed Americans naturally formed groups when they wanted to hold a celebration, found a church, build a school … or do almost anything else.

"The people,” he said, “reign over the American political world as God rules over the universe," "… if they want to proclaim a truth or propagate some feeling ...they form an association. In France you would find the government ... in the United States you are sure to find an association." He observed a deep respect for the law in America – but generally gave political figures low marks.

THE OIL BOBBLE BUBBLES -- AGAIN! -- Just a Minute Radio for Friday 06-12-09

Howdy – do for the weekend you-all!

Well, as old Farmer Snellengrove used to say moppin’ his brow on a humid Carolina day – “It ain’t even Summer yet an already hit’s HOT.” And ‘hit’ was! I remember following my Grandfather around in the garden pulling squash or picking a few tomatoes – and then to the hen-house to collect the eggs.

He had been up since something not too long after 4 AM… started a fire for Grandma in the woodstove –range in the kitchen – milked the cow, fed the livestock, slopped the hogs, with a little help from the boys and occasionally the girls with the milkin’.  If it was a Monday there was water to be pumped another fire to be built under the wash pot – breakfast to be eaten somewhere in there… Granma had baked biscuits—which went really well with that fresh churned butter from the day before and slathered with molasses … and he read from the Bible while we sat around getting hungrier by the minute. He cooled his coffee by pouring it in the saucer… and blowing through his moustache. He had a big nose… and I loved him!

Early in the summer there were strawberries to be picked… a few fruit trees around the place… but peaches were more likely to come a bit later… and although I loved watermelon that was not to be until August… when the scuppernongs were ripe too… and…

Well… sorry… got started down that nostalgia road. The roads were still mostly dirt – red clay dirt. Cars kicked up a red-rooster tail of dust visible a half mile away. Or if it had rained… you might slide in the ditch… or have to get out and push. The CCC boys had come and helped make terraces on the pasture hill and in the growing fields for cotton and corn… just getting a good start on learning how to keep the uplands from washing down the creek.

That’s an old movie – in black and white. I don’t think I ever went to the movies in SC – there were too many other things to do on the farm… But we did stop and get a big block of ice in town from the ice-house. That’s another story… for another day when gas was 10 cents a gallon and you pumped it up in the glass tank where you could see it go down to filling up the tank in the Model “A” – Can many of you remember that?

“JUST A MINUTE”

THE OIL BOBBLE BUBBLES

JUST A MINUTE – I notice the price of gasoline is bouncing around locally -- makes me suspect the ‘oil Sheiks’ – or T-Boone Pickens are playing games with us again. Every time reporters try to pin down ‘big oil’ on why we keep getting gouged – there’s the same broken record playing about the laws of supply and demand, yadda, yadda, yadda.

In the summer of 2008, crude prices got up to $150 per barrel then crashed below $33 per barrel before the year was over – and yesterday closed around $72 per barrel. Which translated to national averages goes from about $4.50 a gallon down to close to $2 a gallon.  I don’t think supply and demand does that -- Tinkering with markets and squeezing the public does.

At the national pump, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was $2.63 Thursday, up from Wednesday's $2.62 triple A said.

So – what do we do about this? Be cheerful, drive carefully, keep your tires inflated properly – and smile a lot.  They say it takes fewer muscles.

I NEVER SEEN THE LIKE... - Just A Minute Radio for Wednesday 06-10-09

Hello at the mid-week again –

Things are developing rapidly over at Playfair – and in Washington – and everywhere I guess --  as the President continues to buy up the country and push us further and faster toward becoming a Marxist state.

Well… there’s just no other way to put it. When the US owns 60% of a bankrupt car manufacturing company – and begins to appoint a “Pay Czar” in addition to a Bank Czar, a Finance Czar – a Defense Czar and about twenty others…we have more Czars running around than the Bolshevik Revolution. And it may get to the place where you can’t lick a lollipop unless you get a permit from the FDA – and certainly a peanut-butter and Jelly sandwich will be ‘Verboten’ once the Sandwich Czar is let out of the jar.

If it weren’t so sad to see our country go down the tubes bit by bit – or bite by bite – it would be funny. But I’m afraid this story has a sad ending both for us and for our grandchildren – and great grandchildren. We’ll just have to keep our chin up and our eye on the prize – which is: pleasing our Loving Saviour. The two things to hang on to so far as I can see are: God is good: God is just. Just about everything you’ll read in Scripture relates back to those two statements. Of course there’s much more than that in the Bible – but in perilous days – you have to get something you may be sure of – and that’s it.

When I was flying regularly, I read aviation books… One was written by a TWA check pilot – who said … when all else goes by the board one thing above all – “Maintain air speed.”  Without that things unravel fast. Of course it’s important to have the number of your takeoffs and landings match – and to “keep the shiny side up” but Maintain airspeed tops them all. In America we’re losing air speed… fast. Let’s keep looking to our Saviour.

            Cordially, IN HIM

            Jack
