A NEW PAGE - Just A Minute Radio -- January 1st, 2010

IT’S FRIDAY – AND A NEW DECADE AWAITS… Just like a field of newly fallen snow…

Unfortunately – we’re liable to tramp around in it and make a mess like was done to 2009… But we’ll give it a try – and do our best to be optimistic.

I’m not going to join the crowd that says Mrs. Napolitano, made a boo-boo. There are too many in that bull pen already. I’d say the last few days she’s been under fire to the point I can’t imagine why she would not love to be back in Phoenix where it’s just California stealing Arizona’s water she had to worry about. Oh yes and there’s the ongoing problem of the United States being the largest landowner in Arizona -- and paying the least taxes – like zero.

It’s just one of those problems the big area states have in the West. We don’t worry much about here in the East. But when Uncle Sam gets a sniffle… Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and some of the rest who have vast areas of their states *owned* and managed by the USA… but they pay no taxes to the States… they get pneumonia!

However, I’ve not found a great exodus on that account. In fact when I first worked for an elected representative from AZ… I’m pretty sure we had only two congressional districts in the whole state… now the Census people are projecting Arizona will get one or two more. Even small little South Carolina is possibly going to get another seat in the House of Representatives. How will that go down? Meanwhile the states in New England and even the Midwest are the ones likely to lose seats. If you look at a red vs blue map… it’s largely the red states due to get *more* representation. Will that make Senator ‘Searchlight’ Harry happy? Not likely – because it’s increasingly liable he’ll be sent back to Searchlight.

Well… let’s start off the new year with a less partisan note. How about taking the cap off the states which restrict Charter Schools? North Carolina, for instance, restricts Charter schools to one per county – which shortchanges population centers like Charlotte and Raleigh even tri-cities who could use and need more schools with less money spent and higher academic achievement. But behind the curtains are the NEA and the AFT who don’t want to let their grip on schools slip – at all. Never mind budget or achievement problems… the important thing is keeping “Union” control … right? Well… it’s not partisan but it sure does hold the kids down.

On a definite upbeat note – people *are* learning to save more, and get along with less. I was cheered to note there are many efforts being made to ‘recycle’ toys for some of the kids who’ve been shorted as their folks are having to cut back. For culture addicts… I’ll give you “Sweet are the uses of adversity.” – Shakespeare’s As You Like It. Act 2 Scene 1… I’ll let you look it up and tell me who said it and why… It’ll do you good!

Cordially, IN HIM – Happy New Year!

Jack

“JUST A MINUTE”

“A NEW PAGE …”

Just A MinuteI’ve used Kathleen Wheeler’s verse on New Years Day before:

He came to my desk with a quivering lip – The lesson was done.

“Dear Teacher, I want a new leaf,” he said, “I have spoiled this one.”

I took the old leaf, stained and blotted, And gave him a new one all unspotted,

And into his sad eyes smiled, “Do better, now, my child.”

I went to the throne with a quivering soul. – The old year was done.

“Dear Father, hast Thou a new leaf for me? I have spoiled this one.”

He took the old leaf, stained and blotted, And gave me a new one all,

unspotted

And into my sad heart he smiled, “Do better now, my child.”

Here’s an even better bit of poetry for a new decade – It’s Psalm 32:8 “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go – I will guide thee with mine eye.”

My great desire is that you have blessed year from your Heavenly Father. <> <> I’m Jack Buttram

T'WAS TH' NITE BEFORE THE NITE BEFORE -- Just A Minute Radio for Wednesday 12-30-09

Great to have you here for the last go ‘round (for us) on the last broadcast day of 2009…

The years sure flit when you get over 50… and I’m about 27 years beyond 50… soon to be 28.  But happy to be here for the present.

I’m a little chagrined at the turn things are taking. I knew they would be different… I guess I didn’t anticipate *how* different.  I do have a definite sense we’re in a deeply transitional time… and that’ll be discussed a bit on the dock near Earl ‘n’ Lester’s Bait Shop and Sushi Bar in today’s program.  I don’t pretend to have a crystal ball or anything like that… neither do I read tea leaves or goats bones thrown to forecast the future. My trust is in the Lord and the book He left us … the record of God coming to earth --  that’s what this season is all about. It’s sort of interesting to see no matter how hard unbelievers try to scrub out what they perceive as myth, there still seems to be no difficulty in the record returning to taunt them.  Never was the scripture more vividly demonstrated than: “Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee.” (Ps 76:10)

Lord willing – we’ll be here on the first day of 2010 (Friday) to share some thoughts with you… Please be sure to join us. Happy New Year!

IT'S THAT TIME AGAIN -- Just A Minute Radio for Monday Dec. 28, 2009

Congratulations… we’ve made it this far together!

Yep… as we get down to those last few days in the year – I start thinking about the things I didn’t get done so far this year… and most of those jobs are ‘hopeless’ to do between now and midnight on Thursday.  I’m not sure I really had a *plan* (it seems I usually don’t) and then there are the forms the government requires… when you’re born – when you die [somebody else has to do that] and when you buy or sell property, pay your taxes… or fail to and it looks as if the bottomless pits of the government’s paper bins feeding into the printing presses will never run out… except of course for the greenbacks – of which there is always month left over at the end of… (the money!)

So… are you looking forward to the coming year?  Or….??  Probably more ??? than !!!  At least that’s the reading I’ve been getting from the radio, TV and news media.  Jimmy Carter used to talk about ‘malaise’ – I don’t think that’s it… but before 2012 election time rolls around I expect someone will come up with a catchy name for it.  I’m kinda tired of the “the Great Depression” aren’t you?  It seems more than a little shopworn.

One of my old friends from college days has given up on any of us who ID ourselves as Republicans… or at least some of us… And I judge he has some reasonable reasons for his brand of ‘malaise’ – but if I were inclined to try and effect a correction in attitude, I don’t think I could make much of a dint.  I notice Peggy Noonan, who wrote off George Bush fairly early in his second term hasn’t appreciably changed her attitude.  She’s not climbing in the Obama lifeboat as yet – but she seems to be wearing one of his life jackets… and thereby hopes to keep afloat I suppose.

It’s pretty hard in this “malaisy” period between years, of a first term presidency which does not have a track record dripping with experience; and when we are being lead by the Pelosi, Reid, Obama triumvirate, to calculate just where we might wash up on a friendly island or sandy beach considering the storm clouds that have been chasing the Republic for quite a few months now.

I spent a few hours Sunday afternoon, re-reading and trying to develop my own outline of the last five chapters of the book of The Revelation. It’s fascinating, Although I’ve read through that portion of the Bible quite a few times, I never recall being as mystified by some of the prophecies there or particular circumstances in the setting of current events and recent history.  I venture nothing new in my predictions… I’m just trying to keep up with current events.  Perhaps you’d like to share some of your ideas… the comment options below this posting are open.  I just ask you to be as brief as possible and cogent.

“JUST A MINUTE”

IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN

Just A MinuteI know it’s time to transish – that is take down the Christmas decorations, rustle up the resolutions, and climb on the bathroom scale to see what needs to be done about that accumulated holiday poundage. But more importantly, it is a time to take stock; take a look back and if possible get a look ahead.

Oh… and I’m sorry our specially prepared Christmas program didn’t get on the air Friday.

BB: At’s rite Mr. Jack whut happened.

MizP: Ah want ta' know too.

Jack: Well… nobody informed me I had to get a program in ahead of my usual time because the automation system would take over and run things on Christmas Eve.

Homer: And the automation system don’t answer the Telephone?

Jack: It answers… but there’s no-one there to take the call – So Christmas greetings just have to wait’ll next year -- So I’m winding up today’s Just A Minute, suggesting you get your Bible and read, say the last five chapters of the book of The Revelation. Which will do you more good than anything else.  It ends with these words: “Surely I come quickly.  Even so, come, Lord Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.”   <>I’m Jack Buttram

A CRITICAL TIME -- FULLNESS -- NOW : Just A Minute Radio for Friday 12-25-09

Good Christmas Morning, Afternoon or Evening to you!

Have things been hectic around your house… still are you say?  Well, that seems to be fairly common among a lot of households from young to old.  But if you just hang on, be patient and good natured… you will survive – the good china may not… but you will. (J)

Today reminds me of one of the best lines from literature – at least I think so… “It was the best of times; it was the worst of times…” Opening lines from “Tale of Two Cities” by Charles Dickens. I copied it from Google… and this is what I got:

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times; it ws the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness; it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity; it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness; it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair; we had everything before us, we had nothing before us; we were all going directly to Heaven, we were all going the other way."

For my money – it seems a pretty accurate summing up what has passed since American ‘crossed the Rubicon’ and embarked on the year of OBAMA.  I don’t think we’ve ever seen anything like it before – and I feel totally insufficient to make intelligent guesses as to the future.  I don’t feel confident – but neither do I feel despair.  I am concerned for our Country – but then we knew it wouldn’t last forever didn’t we.  Now we await to see how events unfold.

I’ve never been through a Tornado… but I know it must be just about totally impossible to tell which way you’re going when snatched up into the vortex.  Frankly… that would be my primary feeling if it were not for my faith in Christ Jesus and His testimony and truth recorded in the Bible. I’m fully convinced of the evidence in the Bible itself as to its reliability and accuracy.  I also know in many areas the Bible is beyond my understanding, but still it is a record of demonstrable and objective truth – nothing else compares with it and with the witness of the Spirit of God which is revealed there. At this crucial time…that’s the record and anchor of the soul that keeps me upright and gives life meaning. So…I’m looking to the future with confidence and faith.  Faith in God, and confidence that Christ is the Messiah and Saviour of our souls. I see no other acceptable or reasonable conclusion.

That sounds awfully heavy for Christmas, but from all I can discern the evidence is overwhelming and it is a great gift from our Heavenly Father. Those who scoff will just have to scoff to themselves. I’m not joining them!

May the Lord’s richest blessings of Family, Friends and most of all Faith in Christ comfort and sustain you this Christmas Day.

            Cordially, IN HIM

“JUST A MINUTE”

A CRITICAL TIME – FULLNESS – NOW

JACK: Just a Minute: Last year we talked about Washington crossing the Delaware.

BB: Rite, Mr. Jack.

MizP: I member tha-ut – they  caut th Hessians by surprise at Trenton.

Homer: That-ut turned th’ tide tha-ut was a-goin against Gen. Washington.

Jack: It was a critical moment.  And we’re going through another one – right now with the events going on in our country today… the very best thing we can do  is pray for HIS will to be manifest.

MizP: Thas a good idea, Mr. Jack.

JACK: And I just want to remind you of this from the Bible which tells what we’re celebrating today… it’s found in the Epistle to the Galatians – those believers in Christ as Savior in the first century.  Chapter 4 verses 4 and 5

“But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.”

That’s why we celebrate the remembrance of Christ coming to the earth making  salvation possible for all who will believe in Him.

From all of us here, our fervent wishes for a Blessed Christmas, remembering Jesus’ birth.

WELL, I NEVER...! -- Just a Minute Radio for Wednesday 12-23-09

Great day here as we begin the “official” Winter… apparently the “official” snow blower that blew in all the way from the West Coast last week hadn’t read the Almanac… or has decided this winter he’s playing ‘catch-up’ on the snow fall.

We understand there’s another snow dumper following a similar track – although down here in the non-mountains we were spared from the slick stuff for the most part.  I did see more trees down than I expected… although I didn’t really go looking for them.

I’m pretty sure it was the wind, icy snow and weakened root systems that accompanied our maiden snowfall last week that properly (or improperly) inaugurated the snowing season – and gave all the merchants chilblains for fear of putting a big ding in late season sales – one they could hardly afford.

My feeling is we’ve got a long hard slog (I think that’s the most fitting word) ahead of us to climb out of this fiscal hole we find ourselves in.  Probably our most difficult problem – lacking the political footing we usually have largely due to a general breakdown in fiscal character among our elected officials – particularly on the national scene.  Reminds me of the days when our Virginia family visited relatives down here in South Carolina during the summer. If you had to negotiate a freshly scraped red clay road in those days (and all of the secondary roads were red clay) you’d better be adept at driving on the “slick stuff” and I don’t mean snow or ice.

A freshly-scraped red-clay hill could put you in one of the two ever present, and usually deep ditches before you could pronounce “Jack-Robinson.”  I’ll bet some of you ‘seniors’ are chuckling and remembering how hard it was to wash the red clay stains out of cotton cloth.  You can remind the New Englanders among us nowadays, we probably had more experience in learning to control a skid – at least in summer – than they did.

You could also see another car coming toward you on a dry day much further than on a wet one… the red dust cloud that kicked up behind Model A’s and Model T’s was much more visible at a distance – especially when hurrying to church. – Now you more seasoned driving veterans can regale your grandchildren with the stories your family is bound to have collected back in “those days.”

Frankly, I find it more enlightening to discuss dirt roads than the kinds of shenanigans going on “up on the Hill” in Washington these days. It’s not encouraging… but we’ll just have to tough it out.

Jack:  Uh… Miz  Pearl… temperature’s rising again.

MizP:  Oh… oh… thank’ee Mr. Jack –

Jack:  See… Jesus came  -- and we celebrate His birth, because  he offers us -- by his

MizP:  He’s a-givin’ us th’ perfek gif at Christmas…

THE DEED IS DONE -- NOW FOR THE PIECES -- Just A Minute Radio for Monday 12-21-09

Good Morning… there may be snow on the ground where you are…

But we’re in pretty good shape here at the home place.  No snow here… or so little we couldn’t tell. We did have a modicum of sleet… but even that was slight.  However the heavy rain and the wind that accompanied it downed some trees and accompanying power lines… but that was about all in the middle part of our County.

However, up toward the mountains things were quite different… and even more striking further north.  The most serious thing we saw (we missed all the car and truck crackups thankfully) was the Amtrack morning southbound which usually arrives here about 5:45 AM going by full speed at around 3:30PM Sunday afternoon… it was, I suppose, yesterday’s train… but we’ll let that pass.

From the info I saw on the tube… all flights were cancelled for a while from Dulles, BWI, Reagan and other major airports northward for quite a span.  So I guess trains don’t *always* get through when the planes aren’t flying.

What seemed to be most contrasting to the average observer was the continued rattle of meaningless news about the Copenhagen summit on *Global Warming* coming before winter ever got here this year… and during the middle of record breaking snowfall for December in the Carolinas and I’m sure parts of the Virginias and northwards… But you can never be sure about those weather boys… or the weather scientists – you “pays your money and takes your choice.” As the old countrymen used to say – or perhaps it was more just a game of ‘heads or tails.’

Winter does officially arrive tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon at 12:46 EST … according to the Almanac. That’s when the Sun appears to cross that line drawn in the sky by Galileo – one  the astronomers call the ‘winter solstice’ – the sun getting further-est north and beginning its return to the South.

Now it’s no use telling the children the sun doesn’t move… because any three year old can see it does… but very slowly… So are you going to believe what Grandpa tells you… or your own lyin’ eyes? (J)

Have a great day… see you Wednesday!

“JUST A MINUTE”

THE DEED IS DONE – NOW FOR THE PIECES

Just A Minute – I’ve been desperately trying to come up with a positive spin on Senator Ben Nelson’s very public cave-in to the arm-twisting of his own political party – but so far, it’s a dry run.

Senator Nelson was Governor of Nebraska for two terms during which he cut taxes, never mentioned he was a Democrat unless asked directly, and lost to Chuck Hagel in 1996.  He often mentions his state’s “bipartisan approach” to politics and up to now consistently opposed abortion.  Nebraska has voted more consistently Republican in the last 60 years than virtually any other state in the presidential contests.

But now, despite pleas by the Governor not to vote for ObamaCare, he suddenly discovers ‘sufficient’ modifications to change his vote from nay to yea.  Frankly, I cannot comprehend how one ‘compromises’ a stand on abortion.  You’re either for killing the baby or saving it.  Even King Solomon could manage no other result.

Since more than 90 percent of Nebraskans poll as disapproving the measure, Senator Nelson now stands first in the line to ‘walk the plank’ for Obama.

LET'S JUST EAT THE WHOLE THING -- Just a Minute Radio for Friday 12-18-09

            Happy FRIDAY Friends…

This continuing discussion of the “Single Payer – Government Health Reform” bill is one of the most tedious things that’s gone on under the Capitol Dome in a loooooong time.

I think if I were of the Democrat persuasion, I’d be against it just on the fact of its hanging around and being dominating things so much at a time of year when we ought not to have to be concerned with what’s happening inside the Beltway.  I’m sure ready for it to be dropped in the trash – and because of its size in both the House and Senate’s version… just one copy of each makes a trashcan full.

During the time I worked on the Senate side of the Hill we had some long term debates… and things moved slowly – until… until the Senators decided they *wanted* something to happen and happen now… and boy could they move when they stepped on the gas.  Suspension of the rules by unanimous consent and everyone wanted action.  That also happened a few days back when they came to the realization if they didn’t pass the debt ceiling increase things would come to a halt – including paychecks…  Well… you can see what happened.  Nossir… no need to delay that…

I was very pleased to see Fox News last night… (Thursday) have an hour-long program hosted by John Stossel who just recently joined them from ABC.  Stossel is one of very few conservative commentator/reporters in major league broadcasting. I’m glad to see he made the change.  I think he’ll be more comfortable at FOX… and will contribute to their success in bucking the tide of the mainstream media.

Hope you’ve got your Christmas preparations mostly underway… I don’t think we can do much more in the time remaining… but one never knows.  We’ll just look to HIM for our marching orders.  See you next week.

“JUST A MINUTE”

LET’S JUST EAT THE WHOLE THING

Just A MinuteNext Friday it’s Christmas -- so who’ll get the presents and who’ll get the bill?  I can’t answer the first one – but there’s no uncertainty about the second – it’ll be the taxpayer!  The last guy to leave the party gets stuck with the check.  Why?  The government hasn’t any money *except* that which is forced from the taxpayer under force of law.

Senators, under Nevada’s “Searchlight Harry,” are still in town, making everybody unhappy, while keeping Senators away from family and voters.

Last night I saw an excellent program with John Stossel, and the CEO of
“Whole Foods,” John Mackey.  The head of Whole Foods, started his now famous Wall St. Journal op-ed with a quote from Margaret Thatcher
:(quote) "The problem with socialism is, eventually you run out of other people's money."

Whole Foods totally, has about 275 stores.  They set up a $2500 health savings account for each team member – it’s their money which accumulates if not used.  The stores are being boycotted by people who want health care like Canada.  Meantime, Whole Foods sales are up.

          Merry Christmas!
