Howdy – do for the weekend you-all!
Well, as old Farmer Snellengrove used to say moppin’ his brow on a humid
He had been up since something not too long after 4 AM… started a fire for Grandma in the woodstove –range in the kitchen – milked the cow, fed the livestock, slopped the hogs, with a little help from the boys and occasionally the girls with the milkin’. If it was a Monday there was water to be pumped another fire to be built under the wash pot – breakfast to be eaten somewhere in there… Granma had baked biscuits—which went really well with that fresh churned butter from the day before and slathered with molasses … and he read from the Bible while we sat around getting hungrier by the minute. He cooled his coffee by pouring it in the saucer… and blowing through his moustache. He had a big nose… and I loved him!
Early in the summer there were strawberries to be picked… a few fruit trees around the place… but peaches were more likely to come a bit later… and although I loved watermelon that was not to be until August… when the scuppernongs were ripe too… and…
Well… sorry… got started down that nostalgia road. The roads were still mostly dirt – red clay dirt. Cars kicked up a red-rooster tail of dust visible a half mile away. Or if it had rained… you might slide in the ditch… or have to get out and push. The CCC boys had come and helped make terraces on the pasture hill and in the growing fields for cotton and corn… just getting a good start on learning how to keep the uplands from washing down the creek.
That’s an old movie – in black and white. I don’t think I ever went to the movies in SC – there were too many other things to do on the farm… But we did stop and get a big block of ice in town from the ice-house. That’s another story… for another day when gas was 10 cents a gallon and you pumped it up in the glass tank where you could see it go down to filling up the tank in the Model “A” – Can many of you remember that?
Cordially, IN HIM
Jack

“JUST A MINUTE”
THE OIL BOBBLE BUBBLES
JUST A MINUTE – I notice the price of gasoline is bouncing around locally -- makes me suspect the ‘oil Sheiks’ – or T-Boone Pickens are playing games with us again. Every time reporters try to pin down ‘big oil’ on why we keep getting gouged – there’s the same broken record playing about the laws of supply and demand, yadda, yadda, yadda.
In the summer of 2008, crude prices got up to $150 per barrel then crashed below $33 per barrel before the year was over – and yesterday closed around $72 per barrel. Which translated to national averages goes from about $4.50 a gallon down to close to $2 a gallon. I don’t think supply and demand does that -- Tinkering with markets and squeezing the public does.
At the national pump, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was $2.63 Thursday, up from Wednesday's $2.62 triple A said.
So – what do we do about this? Be cheerful, drive carefully, keep your tires inflated properly – and smile a lot. They say it takes fewer muscles.
