BETTER OR WORSE THAN 1929? -- Just A Minute Radio for Monday 11-23-09

Good Morning – or whatever it is wherever you are…

We had a rather raw weekend… well, that’s not so. Saturday was OK…sunny and warm enough for fall most of the day here and not too much wind.  But it *was* raw on Sunday… cool, sometimes hard rain and a bit of wind with the winter hint in it.  So… we’re getting to the weather part of winter… which in these later years has not been so cold as the stories my Aunties used to tell about being farm kids commandeering a ladder to go “sledding” down the pasture hill – no steering, no brakes…just crazy, country kids having a big time.

Like they say, if you want a change in the weather here in the upstate… just wait about 15 minutes. – I really don’t know WHO it is in that sentence … but he’s probably outdated by about half a century.  My second oldest grandson, Ian, and his fiancee’ did the dirty work in the fall chore of cleaning out the gutters.  Our house sits in the middle of something like 17 major trees on the lot that also have a LOT of leaves to leave to the ground.  I’ve never been big on raking leaves… and my dislike of it has grown with the years.  A few years back I tried ‘raking’ with a blower… it wasn’t a professional grade machine… So I simply succeeded in confirming my aversion to raking leaves or trying to get rid of them in any fashion that doesn’t involve spending $3000 + dollars on a John Deere with a bagger.  (And even then… where would I dump ‘em?)

The gutter-cleaning adds back-icing to the cake.  My wife and children forbid me from climbing up on the roof. I guess I *would* chance it maybe out of sheer frustration.  We don’t have the spare dough to have whatever the latest craze is in gutter covers installed.  Besides… I think it would lead to several thousands in new gutters downspouts and more cleaning… It’s like that “Old Hound Dog” bayin’ at the moon ballad… ‘Life gets tedious – don’t it?’ I reckon it does… especially when you’re pinching Social Security pennies.

But maybe today’ll be a sunny day and I’ll get over it – like a passing cloud. (J)

I pray for you to have a happy non-tedious say. Let’s make this Thanksgiving week… we’ve got too much to be thankful for to cram it into just one day!

            Cordially, IN HIM

“JUST AMINUTE”

BETTER OR WORSE THAN 1929?

JUST A MINUTE: Stock market investors are sitting on the sidelines wonder just when – or if – the market will recover as predicted; two Republican Congressmen – Jeb Hensarling of Texas and Paul Ryan of Wisconsin – say a weak recovery is more likely than a strong one.  Why?  --

First – there’s UNEMPLOYMENT – which is presently either at 10.2 or 10.4 nationally but more likely something like 15 percent nationwide and with South Carolina ranks number two for joblessness. Also:

Exhibit A – the so-called stimulus is double the size of FDR’s when adjusted for GDP (Gross Domestic Product).

Exhibit B – Bad TAX POLICY.  The tax cuts of 2001 – 2003 are long gone with this Democrat congress.

Exhibit C – Bailing out GM & Chrysler has messed up decades of bankruptcy law – so small business (major source of new jobs) is hesitant to add jobs.

Finally, non-defense spending will hit a 12 percent increase with 43 cents of every dollar to be borrowed.

Plainly: to wipe out sound economic policy means you wipe out successful results.  At this rate, it’s going to be a long, hard slog to recovery.
