MS. NOONAN BACK IN THE GAME - Just A Minute Radio for Monday 111003

Here we are in a brand new month… the last quarter of 2011.

Things are beginning to heat up on the campaign trail apparently. Peggy Noonan – who writes a weekly column for the WSJ weekly edition of the Wall St. Journal – is getting a little more involved in the coming election cycle. This past weekend she wrote a rather pointed article calling attention to the need for a ‘narrative’ that has sort of taken over the method or point of view of critics. For me it would make a bit more sense if they said something like ‘we’re looking for a good story-line’ – narrative is something that ought to show up in a TV or movie script… or perhaps an Orson Welles radio drama… which are still kicking around in Halloween and other famous stories.

I would just as soon we get on with the business of electing or replacing the current occupier of the White House – but I find there’s a war of words already going on especially amongst the ‘commentators’ (not to be confused with the Idaho potatoes or the Irish potatoes or even sweet potatoes) underneath the skin they’re all ‘tubers’ – I think. [Wish my Dad was here… he’s the agronomist.]

In any case we’re getting into what some are saying is the “too late” season.  That is it’s almost too late to do the things necessary to do in order to be an effective candidate for the presidency.  And now that Florida has decided make a Gordian knot out of the primary calendar – and tangle things up tight… well… it’s going to be a contested season I guess. I just hope it doesn’t degenerate into hanging chads and all the other confusions of the Bush – Biden contest of a while back.

I’m not going to be able to hang around long on this shift… things to do and people to see… and the first Monday of the month finds me getting out to a Gideon’s prayer breakfast for our local Gideon’s camp – it’s always good fellowship… and we would indeed like to have more company… but I’ve got to hit the hay soon – cutting the typing short.

So… we’ll be here tomorrow and (DV) the rest of the week if the creek don’t rise. (J) Great to be with you now that things are turning just a bit crisp.

Cordially, IN HIM

Jack

“JUST A MINUTE”

MS. NOONAN BACK IN THE GAME

Just a Minute:  Ms. Peggy Noonan – who’s not exactly been pro GOP since she became ill with George Bush – employed her effective pen in favor of those challenging Mr. Obama.  Over the weekend a story developed out of The President’s travels. It contained a pictured with Story-Teller-in-Chief reading a book to children -- “A Letter to My Daughters.”

Ms. Noonan is a keen observer of America moods – having served more than one President as an able speech writer. She’s observed Americans from both parties who are all hungering for leadership. But they’re getting a campaign-mode President who says he’s doing what no one else can do?

That’s it? That’s your job? Not defending the nation or developing good policies? Just -- storytelling?

She quotes from author Ron Suskind’s book “Confidence Men” – containing an interview with the President (not denied by the White House) which says there’s a flaw in much political leadership of not reflecting reality.  She points to what Ronald Reagan did. He led, was wise and courageous and began to turn the ship around.
