MITT TAKES THE LEAD AT ROUNDTABLE -- for JUST A MINUTE RADIO - Wednesday 111012

Well good Wednesday to you – we’re in the full Hunter’s moon phase, in case you didn’t look it up in the Almanac.

Something about the veggies all being harvested and tucked into root cellers or something similar. Also some old tales about putting up what amounts to a scarecrow I guess… or something to scare people rather than crows. I couldn’t make out which from the stories I was getting. It’s all stuff with candy corn, and trick or treat and hobgoblins and the rest. (BTW – there’s still the full Beaver moon; and the full  Cold moon to look forward to for November and December.)

I remember as a kid Halloween and the early cold winds of winter that were just getting their cheeks puffed out. I rode a bike to deliver papers – except when the slick ice came after a snow in winter… then there was nothing to do but carry the paper carrying bag with ROANOKE TIMES written on its side… and stumble, slip and slide the best way around the neighborhood.

On Sunday’s when the papers were *very* heavy we would occasionally build a fire with the paper wrappers the bundles came in … and some sticks if we thought far enough ahead…and we could imagine ourselves warm before starting out on the route. --- Our home was heated by a coal-fired furnace with a big convection hot air heater grill on the first floor – which was very welcome when coming back in off the route. If the cold weather had set in – our house was in the middle of the route… so I’d try to stop off for a cup of cocoa in the middle of delivering the route… to defrost a bit. But riding a bike in a hilly neighborhood if there was ice on the streets and sidewalks was out of the question.  It just became the ‘slog’ season. Slogging around the route… every day…and once more to collect.  Of course it was worth it… I became a man didn’t I. (J)

Halloween… we never did anything more serious than soap a window or two… and throw corn kernels on the porch of a friend… The were candy kernels… I think… I didn’t like them much.  Halloween sort of came and went on its on if it was an early winter… Oh yeah…. Not winter yet… that didn’t come until two or three days before Christmas.  But it’s all pleasant memories now… reasonably pleasant…. Now that it’s over. (J)  Stories to tell the grandkids.

Well…we can’t sign off now…two more days till the weekend.  So … hang in there.

Cordially, IN HIM

Jack
