WE NEED TO GET GOVERNMENT OUT OF THE O.R. -- for JUST A MINUTE RADIO Tuesday 111004

Hi Folks – This here is a mess-up that needs your help with the clean-up or clean-out!

Today’s JUST A MINUTE gives just a little slice of detail that shows one of the more egregious misuse of regulatory power in a coon’s age. Read on!

We’re dealing with a devices that greatly aid surgeons in replacement of the aortic valve which – as a patient ages, tends to narrow and leak and become less efficient. An extraordinary device has been developed and tested and is being used in hospitals in Europe  -- found to be very useful in certain cases requiring repair.

My daughter-in-law’s father, who is about 90 years old, has had a valve replacement, but not like this I think because it was, and as far as I know still is, in the approval process of the FDA (Food & Drug Administration.)

The difficulty of getting a new drug FDA approved is sufficiently complex and usually has a reasonable record of approving certain drugs and taking others off the market when that’s appropriate. But the procedure I’m told, is much more difficult for a device like an aortic valve.

Obviously, we don’t want drugs or devices approved for use in American hospitals until their safety is very safe. But in the frontiers of medicine the devices… I’m ‘wearing’ a couple… are more difficult to make and be sure of their safety. I had a couple of ‘renal stents’ placed in the vessels that serve my kidneys because the narrowing going on there was elevating my blood pressure. I asked my surgeon, who is a good personal friend…we went to the same undergrad school, I asked him if these stents were ‘coated’ in what I had read was material that prevented a build up of material that clogged stents in arteries?

He assured me the size of the renal arteries did not require that kind of stent because clogging material was not found to be a problem.

Well… my Dad had troubles recovering from duodenal surgery – that’s where your small intestine empties into the large intestine – and because he *healed so well* they had to do portions of the surgery over when the surgical site healed closed… it blocked his intestine again.

I had a similar experience of ‘too much healing’ after a procedure to solve a middle ear problem back in my 20’s – finally we gave up because each ‘clearing away’ procedure generated as much scar tissue – reducing the usefulness of my ear canal. We finally gave up.

So I knew I probably had some ‘over-healing- a non-medical term I just made up – and it turned out I did… and the renal stents had to be re-inflated… or whatever the right term is – to get the right result on lowering BP.  Well enough of my innards…

It just illustrates sometimes even when everybody does the best they can… and these old bodies wear out or something negative happens… after all… God made them perfect but Eve and the Serpent tampered with HIS good work. Someday… it’ll all work perfectly for God’s plans and purposes. I’ll be very glad and I’m sure all of us with bodily ailments will be glad to swap in these wearing out ones for the perfect ones HE wants to provide for us. Meanwhile…

Back to the narrative. I suppose (and this is just my thought) we won’t have *any* problems – much less any problems that are like that… the result of Satan’s successful attack on Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.  What a JOY that’s going to be. And we’ll have all these ‘spare’ doctors and dentists around who’ll be following some other line to be a blessing that God ordains.

OK… I did wander far off the path today. But it was fun for me. I hope it was for you… Drop me a line and let me know.

Love to you all…

Cordially, IN HIM

“JUST A MINUTE”

WE NEED TO GET GOVERNMENT OUT OF THE O.R.

Just a Minute:  In 2004 almost 87 percent of all medical-device studies were carried out in the USA.  Five years later the number of studies dropped from 87 to 45 percent.

A prime case is an aortic valve replacement – often needed for aging heart patients. It’s been approved in Europe, but with the current constraints more than 15 thousand patients across the world will die before US doctors (and others) are approved to use this device already saving lives in Europe.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been severely questioned for not utilizing current recall tools even while asking for new authority. Both political parties continue to express concern about the FDA’s misuse of regulatory authority cutting back on innovation, job creation and quality of patient care.

Some Americans are sufficiently healthy seek care in Europe, but in the intervening four years thousands of patients too sick to travel or too ill for open-heart surgery are waiting to die.

This ought not to be happening. Obama-care will exacerbate the problem resulting in thousands more unnecessary deaths.
