ARE WE HEADED UP OR DOWN? -- For JUST A MINUTE Radio for Wednesday 110921

This has been a wonderful and cool (I fear it may turn hot again) week near the end of Summer.

Actually the first day of Fall is later this week. I always check the OLD FARMER’S ALMANAC to see just when the sun crosses the equator at the autumnal equinox. And it will Friday of this week on the 23rd – but you’ll have to rise early to breath Autumn’s first breath at 5:05AM.  Could be we’ll have a sprinkle of rain or so by then… We could sure use it.

Meantime, the political scene has turned into sort of a dull roar. And the next elevated noise level may be on Thursday evening when the GOP primary contestants square off again. The divisions are becoming more evident. I won’t review them all – I’ll leave that to you. I’ll just toss in a couple of observations I don’t fully understand.

Rick Santorum, who lost his primary race about six years ago to veteran Senator “Snarlin” Arlen Specter has just not gained traction at least in the polls I’ve seen. (I don’t keep up with them all…too many.) He’s been sort of dragging along in last place and it’s hard to explain. He’s probably the youngest looking of the male candidates. He speaks well and has a good presentation – he just doesn’t get much of a chance because the questions come his way with a big dollop of infrequency. It isn’t that he’s giving answers off the mark or that are not interesting. But he does complain about such anemic coverage of what he does get a chance to say – and that’s not very flattering. Maybe someone can explain it to me. From all I can tell, having been one of Pennsylvania’s senators six years ago seems he’s just being left to bump along the bottom of the fish pond.

Also I make an observation some of the ‘opposition press’ (and I know they aren’t divided officially along those lines… but it does seem there are correspondents who make no bones about exhibiting their biases) really are awful in flouting their viewpoints. Maybe it’s just I am getting older and came from a different age – but I can’t recall seeing coverage of Michelle Bachman for instance, that is so grindingly bitter. You have to go back a ways in the early days of electioneering in Colonial America to run into emotions and language that is… well I might as well express it… so WICKED!

I know we have freedom of the press in the USA. But some of these guys (and gals too I suppose) look like they haven’t been fed often enough and have been let out of their cages to take bites out of GOP hides.  Excuse me… I just turn the page or flip off the receiver.  These masters of bad manners and language would be right at home in the age of the Medieval Spanish Inquisition.  They’re a bane to listen to and woeful for the digestion.

Well… see you tomorrow.

Cordially, IN HIM

Jack
