FIFTEEN SECONDS TO BE PRESIDENT -- Just a Minute for Wednesday 10-08-08.

Howdy friends ---

The second non-debate between the Presidential candidates has taken place and in the slang of the old side-show barker: “You pays your money and you takes your choice.”  CNN said McCain was the loser and FOX said he was the winner by quite a margin from those who sent in text votes to the cable network.

FOX has become a major player, with its measured ratings right up  there with the big boys on some of the shows – the VP debate racked up about 70 million viewers – within a million or so of the three majors. Which makes them all happy. Meantime back at the ranch, the sentiment around the McCain camp is generally something big (and good) has to happen to change those numbers to favor the Arizona Senator. Everyone is straining to make that happen on the ‘conservative’ side – but there’s visible anxiety.

The best hope they can come up with in the McCain camp is that Obama has ‘peaked too soon.’  That’s a viable but somewhat unreliable reed on which to lean.  It is true that come from behind winners do emerge. Harry Truman is probably the best known in recent history (1948) but it goes against the general pattern.  McCain is still within striking distance but the time grows short and the margins seem to max out at about 8-9 percent and that’s not within most of the polls and their margins of error.

At the same time, Ms. Palin’s addition to the campaign is just starting to really take hold – and the financial crunch has diverted attention from what might have been the major issues in a campaign that followed the ‘books.’ So there’s enough uncertainty out there – to cause some sweating in the Obama camp also – except they don’t seem to show it much.

Truth and Judgment seem to be the major themes at the moment – but they change from day to day. For Christians who support the Senator and his Alaska governor running mate the theme is still sounded (and rightly so) that the Lord is the one ultimately who will “put up one or take down the other.” And most Bible believing Christians would more or less be in that camp.  But if you’re looking for a bit of re-enforcement for your spirit… I suggest you read 2 Chronicles 19 and 20 for a very stirring account of which the key verse (at least for me) is: “The battle is not yours but the Lord’s”  And I believe if we carefully and prayerfully hold that attitude close to our hearts – we won’t be moved no matter which way the wind seems to be blowing.

May the Lord bless you all.

Cordially, IN HIM

Jack
