DOES THE JOURNAL BEGIN TO LEAN LEFT? - Just A Minute for Friday 10-31-08

IT’S FRIDAY everybody – and the last one before the curtain comes down on Tuesday…

Well, really - - the curtain has to go up before going down… but the show is *almost* over – we hope. Except with all the intentional messing around with the voter registration – we’re probably going to have a LOT of questions… unless the victory is SO great there is no point in doing a re-count – but I’m not holding my breath on that one.

Monday, it’s election eve… and we’ll probably be best advised to do what one of our Greenville County legislators requested – watch and pray and engage in fasting. Certainly God will have to oversee a modern day miracle if the situation is as the pollsters would have us believe. No doubt the Main Stream Media has already measured the drapes and order the tux for the inaugural ball. But as I heard Barack O himself say: “Don’t get too cocky.”

There are other things going on in this old world besides the election. I know a bunch of Phillies fans who are happy, who have hardly noticed that there’s an election going on. There are engaged couples on the verge of tying the knot who don’t think the election is the most important thing on their horizon… So… Let’s just all have a nice relaxing weekend – go to church and Praise the Lord!

“JUST A MINUTE”

DOES THE JOURNAL BEGIN TO LEAN LEFT?

Just A Minute – I’ve never been a fan of Rupert Murdoch – because I don’t cotton to folks who act like big bullies in either sports or news. Murdoch doesn’t to my personal knowledge belong to the “big bully” class – checking out his history of acquiring major media – I found out he’s regarded among the top 100 wealthiest on the globe so I’m guessing he’s close.

What attracted my attention is the fact the Wall Street Journal, flagship of the Dow Jones Company, hired a left-wing former blogger, Thomas Frank, for its editorial staff. I worry this portends a left-ward lurch in America’s last major daily newspaper.  The Murdoch empire also owns FOX NEWS, The Weekly Standard and possibly some other rightward outlets, but it also signals a leak in the dike which I pray won’t become a major erosion.

What gives me some comfort is finding the Investor’s Business Daily gives every evidence of being able to take up the cudgels if The Journal falters. Conservatives need every ally we can attract in the next four years no matter who wins the Oval Office.

GET IN ON THE REAL DEAL -- Just A Minute for Thursday 10-30-08

Getting’ close… Praise the Lord. I thought we’d never arrive at the station…

Campaign news says Barack has spent something like $150 million on TV and Radio ads in Virginia. It might work out better if you just handed out the $15 or $20 to each voter outside the polling place… No .. I think that’s illegal.

Wouldn’t it be delightful the Democrats would just nationalize Obama’s campaign chest – spreading the wealth around and cinch their standing with the population. Everybody could go to dinner on the Obama-bandwagon.

My conclusion is: I can’t come to a good conclusion. The more I try to pin down data that would give a clear indication of *something certain* the more confused I get. I guess that’s why I never got a call back from Karl Rove to join his strategizing team. J

I’m just getting *very tired* of this whole thing. It’s been going on entirely too long. I hear that from every quarter. I’d be in favor of starting a Gag-the-Gas-Bag campaign –make it a Federal offence to start campaigning for a Federal office prior to Labor Day in  the year of the election. Penalty would be to sit out the campaign in the hoosecow. (Now that’s an oldie… nobody uses that label any more for jail.)

No kidding… If we could just harness the hot air and carbon footprints of the campaigners and their crowds we’d be a long way toward solving the energy crisis. Well – maybe that qualifies as “hot air” by itself.

Today, I recommend looking up Monica Showalter’s audio interview about Sarah Palin. I’ve never heard a media member (not employed by a campaign) be so enthusiastic about a political person. Ms Showalter, who is a crack editorial writer for IBD, thinks Mrs. Palin really knows her stuff and knows how to get things done. I was really surprised to hear that interview on their RSS feed … Oct. 23. You can search it for yourself on the Investors Business Daily web site…it just takes a little tracking down. Ms Showalter did several interviews with the Alaska Governor prior to McCain picking her as a running mate.

Personally, I just have a hunch, although the MSM effort is to boost Obama as their man – and it seems like 95% of the electorate has climbed on board – I believe it’s going to be a *very close* race and previous experience with last minute changes in the ‘undecided column’ – especially with these uncharted waters of race, inexperience and the pattern of associations that particularly rub up against issues of national security are just impossible to forecast. The Truman “Whistle Stop” campaign run from the back of an observation car criss-crossing the US was a first in American politics – a unique situation with a very unpopular President running against a suave, polished politician who had governed New York – a very sophisticated state – and everybody was surprised.  Gallup – about the only pollster in those days – quit polling about a week before the election. He was fooled by his own data.

Truman’s next four years were difficult. He about popped Drew Pearson in the nose… avoiding getting charged with sending threats through the mail only because he sent his angry note about Pearson’s column critical of Margaret’s singing, via messenger. He left office still very unpopular succeeded by war-hero Gen. Dwight Eisenhower who had never won an elected office before.

But now… when Presidents are ranked – Truman always comes in among the top ten. I just have the feeling some strong cross currents are running which have escaped being measured in a material way by a media largely entranced with its own self-importance to the deterioration of doing its job of *reporting.* Well…that’s ‘the old codger’s’ best guess.

“JUST A MINUTE”

GET IN ON THE REAL DEAL

Just A Minute – I’m constantly needing to correct my propensity in political discussions, to “find what I’m looking for.” By that I mean backward reasoning – reasoning from the conclusion back to the cause.

But if you want to receive a clear-eyed, objective evaluation of Gov. Sarah Palin check out Monica Showalter, editorial writer for Investor Business Daily. Google www.IBDEditorials.com and look for Monica’s audio interview about the Governor. It’s excellent!

Meantime, if you want a copy of the script or audio of JUST A MINUTE contact me – the “how to get it” information is given every day at the end of the broadcast. It’s best to do it within a few days of the air date because my memory is terrible – just recall the date on which you heard it. Send me a message or call and I’ll get you one on the way as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, I remind you of Winston Churchill’s most famous speech ever – “Never give up. Never, never, never, give up… !”

THE WEEK BEFORE THE END -- Just a Minute for Wed. 10-29-08

Hello out there in the mid-week…

Everyone seems to be sitting on a pin cushion waiting for the other shoe to drop – or something equally weighty.

Every day brings some new revelation to light – plus there seems to be a resurgence in interest in Mr. Obama’s birth certificate since the Governor of Hawaii – a female Republican – has sealed the birth record under lock and key and instructed her staff that no one is to have access to it before the election.

In almost every mail I get more questions and information about Obama’s half-brother living in Kenya – and other bits and pieces that make things uncomfortable riding toward the election. The ACORN mess-up is pretty much a sure thing to at least foul up the process in Florida as well as possibly Ohio and almost all the nets are muttering they don’t think there will be a clear winner on election night… something like a Technicolor three-ringer repeat of the infamous ‘hanging chads’ only this time it will be The Case of the Clouded Screens – or some other electronic glitching.

So… we might as well lean back and enjoy the drama. My wife will be a poll worker on election day so we’ve already cast our votes for ‘the winner’ – at least the hoped for winner. We do so in faith believing the Lord will work things out HIS way – to accomplish HIS will. Nobody had to supervise the Lord’s rescue of the Children of Israel from Pharaoh’s Army – neither did he do any more than equip Gideon’s 300 with pitchers, lamps and shofar horns to cause the Midianites to kill each other in the dark. The odds looked impossible for Jehosophat’s army also but the Lord set ‘ambushes’ that apparently divided the enemy’s host into factions that killed one another. So… if HE did it before – it’s not beyond HIS ability to do something extraordinary in HIS time to deliver us out of this quandary – if deliverance is deserved. We are challenged to FAST and PRAY for victory. There are lives of children yet unborn which hang in the balance.

I’m so glad I’m on the winning side – not speaking of this political jousting – but of the battle against Satan.

HOW MUCH DOES EXPERIENCE COUNT - Just a Minute for Tuesday 10-28-08

            Greetings and salutations –

For all of you getting discouraged about the polls – remember they are but ‘rootless weathervanes’ – they tell only which way the hardest blowhards are blowing at the moment. Plus there’s been a ton of mass persuasion material floating around out there to mess up the minds of the minority of the electorate who really want to think through the issues.

I’ve been greatly deceived by the polls and frankly given up paying much more attention to them than I do the calendar or change of seasons. Spring may be late – or Fall – but the leaves always turn and come to the ground and the weather gets cold. Sure we may have dry years…sometimes, like now… several in a row. But the Lord sends the rain upon the just and the unjust – and he knows the sparrow’s fall plus the number of hairs on your head – or for that matter your red blood count. So… just keep in mind nothing is beyond HIS knowledge OR HIS control.

It’s always comforting to me to re-read the account of Joseph who was sold into slavery by his own brothers… and the … We would say ‘tragic’ turn of events that took him away from his parents, family and friends.  But that ‘tragic’ path trained him to become the man of God the Father wanted him to become. He maintained his purity and integrity and eventually became the means of *saving* his entire family from starvation and death.  Well… I won’t go through it all… but it’s there in the first book of the Bible (so no excuse of not knowing where it is) beginning at Chapter 37 and going on through the end of the book. It’s a fascinating story if you’ve not read it before… or even recently.

It’s summed up toward the end when Joseph says to his brothers who had treated him wickedly but God had preserved him: “…you meant it to me for evil, but God meant it for good” (Gen. 50:20) Those are excellent words to keep before your eyes and heart in these times when the charges and insults are flying back and forth.  God knows what HE is doing. Our job is to fit in with it – as Joseph did.

“JUST A MINUTE”

HOW MUCH DOES EXPERIENCE COUNT

Just A MinuteChris Matthews assembled a panel over the weekend who tore into Sarah Palin discussing how disastrous she has been to the McCain campaign. Matthews, called her  "an object of ridicule" and Andrea Mitchell NBC News said she was (quote) "not a serious choice."

Then good ole Chris asked if McCain would have been better off picking Romney or Pawlenty. They dropped that and concerned themselves with who might be the GOP standard bearer in 2012 if McCain falters – and suddenly – lo and behold the Alaska Governor was accorded the status of being a ‘serious candidate.’ Anne Kornblut of the Washington Post said:  "She "certainly has a claim to run.”  The observation of John Heilemann, of New York magazine was: "She's got a lot of fans out there," adding, Mrs. Palin is (quote) "…the most popular person in the Republican Party right now."  With Clarence Page of the Chicago Tribune,  concurring: -- "There are things she's very good at…"

Hmm – On Nov. 4th she’s not qualified – but if Obama wins, suddenly on Nov. 5th she is. Can anyone pronounce “media bias?”

WILL WEALTH RE-DISTRIBUTION WORK? - Just A Minute for Monday 10-27-08

Howdy and Good Monday to you all –

We had an interesting weekend. Several things occupied our attention – One was a visit to the South Carolina’s Governor’s Mansion on Saturday. Gov. Jim Edwards, and Greenville County GOP Chairman back around the 60’s Greg Shorey, have been kicking around an idea for preserving the history of the SC Republican Party dating from the days in which it was rumored to be able to hold a county convention in a phone booth. It was a gathering of “Carolina Pioneers” – I think that’s the informal title of a group that numbered about 300 according to unofficial estimates.

In any case it was a time of convivial cordiality and recognition – not of ‘old’ but of ‘long-familiar’ faces we have seen in party conventions and actions across the State. (I’m one of the younger members you might guess. J -- and Barbara too…) So we enjoyed that fellowship and all the effort that was put forth. In addition I’d like to mention Roger Milliken, who is very deserving of the informal honor of having been the person most responsible for the restoration of the GOP to a genuine two-party system in South Carolina since the days of reconstruction. I won’t go into the details. He’s a very modest man who’s reluctant to step into the spotlight – but who does deserve a huge amount of credit and appreciation for making governance better in South Carolina.

Barbara and I also had the sad but joyous occasion to re-visit the area where we lived for seven years before moving back to the Greenville area – Rutherford County in North Carolina. The sad part of the visit was one of our neighbors suffered the loss of a grandchild – Travis Kent – in a car accident last Wednesday and the memorial and funeral service was Sunday. So… again we saw old friends – sad for the loss, but joyous in knowing Travis is now with the Lord. He was a skilled pilot in aircraft and helicopters – but was an unskilled passenger – wearing his seatbelt – but still the victim of too much speed on a too sharp turn. In any case we were glad to be a part of comforting the family and seeing other friends.

Today’s program is a true story – I’d like to have reaction to it. It’s where the policy meets the person in reality – and puts a face and place on what happens when rhetoric is – well let’s say unsupervised.. Unfortunately that’s often true of most of what you hear in political campaigns.

“JUST A MINUTE”

WILL WEALTH RE-DISTRIBUTION WORK?

Just A Minute – Reality overtakes rhetoric when Obama’s ‘spread the wealth’ is tried in an “unscientific but true” experiment from a trusted source in Florida.

A young lady – we’ll call her Julia – dinning in a favorite restaurant near Disney World, found her usual server once again wearing his “Obama ‘08” tie –signaling once more his political affiliation. At the meal’s conclusion when Julia got the check she informed the server she was going to practice what Obama was preaching – so she told him as he “stood there in disbelief“I [am] going to re-distribute [your] tip to someone I deem more in need -- the homeless guy I saw outside. The server angrily stormed from my sight.”  She continued: “I went outside, gave the homeless guy ten dollars as I’d decided he could use the money more -- and told him to thank the server inside.”

She observes: “The homeless guy was grateful … but the waiter was pretty angry.” And concludes – “I guess the redistribution of wealth is easier to swallow in concept than in application.”

We’ll do what we can to see Mr. Obama is duly informed.

REV. AL SHARPTON TAKES A WALK -- Just a Minute for 10-24-0

Howdy everyone – it’s FRIDAY!   (sounds of cheering over the hill…)

The campaign just keeps ‘rolling along’. Hardly are we out of one issue before another descends and the gabble starts all over again.

Do you notice increasingly – especially on FOX NEWS it seems – there will be a three shot with all the talking heads talking at once!  And nobody can hear what *anybody* is saying. One might as well be listening to the 8th Army Chorus singing the Caisson Song – In fact I think that would sound better. Bill O’Reilly’s show is about the worst offender – or maybe THE VIEW on which O’Reilly made a guest appearance this week to plug his latest book.

I’ve about come to the conclusion you really can’t make a point in America – even if you’ve attained the rank of mega celebrity – unless you write a book. So we have the highways and bookstores criss-crossed by a traffic jam of busses or limos hauling authors around to book signings and events for this and that.

C-Span and C-Span2 are quite educational at times and totally boring and repetitive at others. I’ve happened upon some interesting lectures… although I have to say I’ve never bought a book because of C-Span exposure. Probably I shouldn’t write that because the best book interviewer I’ve seen there was, fortuitously, Brian Lamb -- a press secretary to a Senator from Colorado whose name I have forgotten now. During that span of years I had worked for Senators Thurmond, Goldwater, Griffin and Beall. Brian is a fine guy, Paul Weyrich was also in that group and I’ve forgotten his Senator also.

Well.. off the track again. It’s nice to consider something other than the election or the economy for at least some kind of sanity-preserving parts of the day. I’m concluding this day by having watched the second game of the World Series. I had forgotten how I welcome watching baseball -- and it’s the end of the season.

We are drawing nearer the end of this seemingly eternal election cycle – and unless we have whatever is the electronic equivalent of the Florida ‘hanging chad’ fiasco, we’ll be done with that and well into “Who gets what post in the new Cabinet?”  More grist for the mill.

It will be devoutly wished that we pass on from these petty ‘issues’ about how much was spent on Ms. Palin’s wardrobe or how expensive are Senator O’s suits –or whether it will be OK for Mr. McCain to address his gathered victory clan on the lawn of the hotel where he plans to be on election night in Sedona (I think that’s what I glimpsed on the TV today.) I was involved in arranging that once (which was enough). I got to tell the network guys what they would NOT be getting  from Senator Goldwater on election night in Washington…  That was the saddest “victory” party ever. I hope I never to be near another one.

Sorry for the rambling… I’ll sign off… it’s one A.M. and morning comes too soon.

“JUST A MINUTE”

REV. AL SHARPTON TAKES A WALK?

Just A Minute – John Fund, a writer who began his Washington career reporting for the Evans-Novak Report -- now continues flogging favorite issues like term limits and voter illegalities for the Wall St. Journal. So the burgeoning ACORN scandal that’s been going on for years even with tax money contributions, is familiar territory to him.

It strikes an extremely tender note with the very Reverend Al Sharpton who has a new skinny profile, and sees a runaway freight headed his way. Federal investigations are underway in a dozen states – and the Rev. Al timidly agreed with weekend TV host Rev. Mike Huckabee, who introduced two ACORN workers narrating how they had enticed folks with cigarettes and money into signing illegal multiple registrations. Sharpton said: (quote) "We have to make sure there is no voting fraud here … I think people across party lines should stand together for the integrity of voting."

ACORN’s activities have cast a shadow over the whole process.

AND THE WINNER IS -- ENVELOPE PLEASE! -- Just A Minute for Thursday 10-23-08

            Hello again…

Here we are drawing closer to… I’ll bet you thought I was going to say Friday… well… correct… but we’re also about a dozen days away from finalizing our votes for President and all the other races on your local ballot. When we lived in Virginia it was a bit of a drag… *Every* fall season brought an election. The Governor’s office was – at that time – only for two years I believe and other statewide offices – but they were on alternate years from the Congressional House and Senate races of the U.S. congress – as well as the Presidential race only every four years.  But *every* year for the Virginia ‘local’ races. It gets a bit tiring.

This particular race has had the same problem because the Democrat primaries fired up across the landscape by January of 2005… there were so many candidates in the starting blocks including Mr. Obama – who possibly lit the fire under the rest of them – although Miz Hillirary wasn’t far behind in ambition and fund raising. So… we’ve had an election cycle and a half. It’s hard to think back to when people *weren’t* running. I can stand a break – how about you?

Problem is with the ACORN effort that has bollixed up the efforts in half a dozen states – there’s likely to be a month or two of hasseling going on just to comb out the tangles of this election. Well.. nothing to be done about it now… But let’s see what can be done later.

Today we ask the expertise of Michael Barone to help us untangle the political polls… see what you can make of this mess. Perhaps our collective effort can have an effect. I certainly hope so.  For a nation that’s supposed to be good at governing ourselves – we seem to be having a difficult time.

            Thanks for tuning in.

“JUST A MINUTE”

AND THE WINNER IS – THE ENVELOPE PLEASE…

Just A Minute – I call on Michel Barone, who writes for U.S. News and edits the Almanac of American Politics to help interpret polls.

Essentially Michael says: “… political polls are imperfect instruments. Reading them right is less a science than an art. We can trust the polls, with qualifications. He says only half of those approached by exit pollsters will do it – so you get the more enthusiastic supporters. Also age groups vary in participation: younger fewer – older more. Averaging these factors -- realclearpolitics.com estimates Obama leads McCain by about five percent.

The big undecided factor is – well – the undecided; a larger group this year than in the past. Add the Electoral College… which makes it possible to win the presidency but lose the popular vote. If Obama wins the votes of a larger slice of undecideds -- or if a significant number don't vote -- he'll could win a popular vote majority, something only one Democratic nominee, Jimmy Carter, has done in the last 40 years.

So – altogether, where does that leave us? Undecided!

EARNEST COMES HOME -- Just A Minute for 10-22-08 Wednesday

            Howdy everyone…

Some days you just can’t squeeze everything in the available minutes… that’s been me all the opening days of this week. Barbara and I went to vote yesterday afternoon… what a crowd… and I understand we were there when the crowd was down a bit. It was late in the afternoon at our Courthouse Square and the line (in my estimation) was long and slow moving. We are used to voting ‘absentee’ because Barb has been an election official (In NC they called her the “Chief Judge” for that precinct) – which means a few extra bucks for extra duties like picking up the supplies and bringing all the stuff – signs etc. – plus the ballots back to the county election HQ – adding a couple of hours to an already LONG day that began well before 6AM to have the poll place ready to open at 7AM… [I may have those times wrong – I’m just the evening chauffer.]

Anyway – this year with the advent of ACORN everything here in SC is different from anything we’ve gone through before.  Barb has been ‘reduced’ to being just a ‘poll worker’ -- the ‘Courier’ here does all the pickup and return work. And the line in the courthouse moved slowly – but the crowd was good humored and mainly black. I think we stood in line for about 45 minutes. Her ‘reason’ for voting absentee was OK… she’s a poll worker. Mine was suspect… having to drive a pollworker to the polls is not sufficient… but being over 65 is. So it wasn’t all for naught. I didn’t hear what reasons the other folks were giving.

The news that ACORN has now been reported doing “illegal” things by the NEW YORK TIMES who had recently poo-pooed the reports of voter fraud as being… well ‘fraudulent.’ Typical MSM media down-putting for those of us on the right.

So… I’m not predicting an upset – but I do think the MSM is seriously out of touch with the mood of a large slice of the electorate. On the other hand… as a conservative hopeful optimist – I’m usually ‘finding what I’m looking for.’  For instance this year Harry Truman’s presidential race in 1948 is my model – but then that was true for me also back in 1964 – All that means is we *all* look at things through our particular prism or bias. I *do* think there are strong cross currents in the election this year – more than any race I’ve experienced in my voting years -- since 1952. [A close second would be when JFK ran against Nixon in 1960.] I’m not smart enough to know what they mean – but I find neither are most of the folks who predict now… or the ones who predicted Dewey’s win over Truman in 1948.

Truman left the Capital in the throes of his lowest popularity ratings…now he’s in the top ten rated Presidents… I think a similar thing may well happen to George W. Bush’s legacy. His major accomplishment is we’ve not had another huge terrorist attack since 9/11 (Praise the Lord) and although on some things he has stumbled – that’s been true of almost every President who has accomplished anything significant. Still…we’re in untraveled country with this election and no matter who wins we’ll still be in that same situation. What’s the safest course? (The question everyone’s asking… of the stock market and of politics?) Of course as I jocularly remind some of my Democrat friends: “The main reason for Democrats is to remind the rest of us why we vote Repubican.” I’m not intending to be offensive. I am much in a favor of the two party system – as in: “It takes one to catch one…”

“Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.” Ps. 20:7  That’s the ‘gold standard’ of trust. It gets no more certain than that. [Sorry Mr. Hitchens… if it leaves you out in the cold – or hot. Please come in.]

            Cordially, IN HIM
