Well, what’s all the yawning about?
It’s hard to stay up for all two hours of debate on a Friday night and then have to write a script and then get up early…
Well, by now one ought to be getting use to the drill. Yeah, but it never seems to get any easier – and especially to make sense on the keyboard (and not too many errors) before sending the memo out to be a part of JUST A MINUTE to see how things come out.
‘Tis’ simple – the one (candidate) who gets the most votes wins. Well… almost. In a Federal election for the Presidency… it only comes every four years. The President is limited to two terms of 4 years each… Each Congress person gets terms of two years. Which is intentional wanting to make the House of Representatives more readily accessed by the people in his/her district. If the representative strays too far off the policies and outlooks his constituency supports, then the representative has his slot taken over by a candidate to represent that Congressional district.
At present there is no limit on the number of terms a representative can serve… but he is readily turned out if the majority (or most votes) are not cast for him within that district. [That’s a bit abbreviated – but you get the idea.] So that’s why the House of Representatives can change hands every two years. Some of the Reps get tired of having to stand for election every two years… others seem to relish it because it keeps them close to the people.
Senators, by contrast – who originally were elected by the Senate – now serve at the pleasure of the people… in six year terms… again… unlimited times – Although the term of a Senator comes around with what seems to be increasing frequency. Having Senators with six years reflects the ‘more reserved’ nature of the smaller Senate… (just 100 Senators) --- and many think those terms should be shortened.
The President serves for four years – and at present is limited to two consecutive terms of four years.
The House has to originate spending legislation… although sometimes it’s honored in the breach… by various camouflages. And a majority of senators has to approve their election… as they also have to do for judges, and various others on the Supreme Court (their terms are for life if they wish) Cabinet officers, various other military ranks, judges, ambassadorships – Military officers of a certain rank etc. It’s all in the Constitution. Judges are appointed and approved by the Senate for life. There is a strong desire on the part of some voters to change these terms… although it has to be done in accord with the rules in the Constitution.
Well enough “Civics” for a Friday. Go home and take a nap. (J)

“JUST A MINUTE”
SO WHAT DID WE LEARN FROM THE DEBATE?
Just a Minute: Having 21 debates to select a candidate to replace an incumbent President takes strategy beyond the 50 yard dash or even the 5 kilometer race. The primary thing to remember is not to ‘rough up’ your one contestant in the coming race. It takes more wisdom than engaging in just a high school debate. You don’t just flip a coin to discover whether you argue for the affirmative or negative.
The Obama Administration counts on Republicans becoming so obsessed with occupying front runner slot; they forget the matter of gathering the most electoral votes. Just having an exuberant cheering section most likely won’t bring you out ahead of the opposition.
Thursday night’s debate demonstrates most any candidate who does not get the big picture can steer his or her effort right into the ditch. The GOP desperately needs a coach to listen to closely. Right now our team seems to have lost the vision that it takes to win the leadership of the
<> We need a coach with God’s vision, and that requires earnest prayer. I’m Jack Buttram. (END)
