WE'VE FOUND OUR FOREIGN POLICY ADVISOR - Just A Minute Radio on Thursday 110602

We’re slidin’ rite into the ‘hot’ of Summer it seems.

I would have guessed we would have gotten some rain out of the report yesterday… but it was not so to be – at least not where we were.  It was 95 F in the shade and not a lot of breeze.  But that’s the way it is come Memorial Day… sort of the informal beginning of the official beginning of Summer.

With all the breeze in the air about TAX CUTS vs. TAX INCREASES it did my old eyes good to take in a picture of the table at the Reagan Ranch Center – at the REAGAN RANCH near Santa Barbara California. It’s a smallish round table and the caption on the picture says it is the “original tax cut table upon which the President signed the largest tax cut in American history.” – It’s protected in living room of the ranch house at the Reagan Center. I think the name of the place is “Rancho Cielo.”  (But both my memory and my Spanish are not to be relied upon.)

Yesterday there was a big marching up the hill and down again. I never got a real accurate count of how many members of the House trooped over to the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue to get a briefing from the House Leadership as well as from the President in the White House about the vote they took on the proposal put before the house.

Of course the defeat was a foregone conclusion because it was put up that way in order to get members vote on record… and even in that some members were to chicken to do more than vote “Present.”  I think were I to be a constituent of that kind of wishy-washy member… I would do my best to make sure he or she did not come back to do the same thing after the 2012 election.  But then that’s me.

Well… we’re going to be hearing a lot from the campaign trail for a while. And I guarantee it’s a long hot summer – politically speaking – we have in store… not only this  summer but we have to go through it all again – only with a smaller cast – next summer. Hoo boy… pass the lemonade!

I guess this is the scene always being described as: sausage making and law making – those are two processes you don’t want to watch. We’ll get mighty tired of it for sure before the summer is passed.

Off to bed…I’m staying up too late trying to figure this out. See you next day… (actually it will be TODAY!)  Sorry ‘bout that.

Cordially IN HIM

Jack

      “JUST A MINUTE”

WE’VE FOUND OUR FOREIGN POLICY ADVISOR

Just a Minute: Lech Walesa, former president of Poland, received the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation award in Washington. But the former trade union leader didn’t stick around the capital to meet The President or when he was in Warsaw.  Instead the Ex-President departed for a religious festival in Italy – telling Polish reporters: "It's difficult [to say] what you'd like to say to … a superpower. …  I won't meet him, it doesn't suit me."

The ex-trade unionist made his attitude clear attending the award dinner with about 500 people with Defense Secretary Robert Gates also made a speech.  Walesa, a Nobel laureate, once hung up a “Solidarity” banner in Washington across the street from the Russian Embassy. Now despite the late hour he briefly contrasted current foreign policy with that of President Reagan’s time.

He said then the U.S. represented a “good empire” compared with the "evil empire" of the Soviet Union under Gorbachev. But now I observe you have not a very good leadership,"  he told the audience through an interpreter -- adding the US-Polish relationship is weaker due to anti-missile defense disagreements.  Even Britain’s Daily Telegraph describes U.S. policy in similar terms.
