CAN "VAN" JONES START A LIBERAL TEA PARTY? - for JUST A MINUTE Radio - Monday 110627

Welcome to a spell of somewhat calmer weather along the Caroliner line.

We’ve had some ‘threatening’ clouds but the chance of rain for the most part seems to be below 30% so we’re pretty much in the clear.  And that’s welcome especially when people have been looking at the major flood waters in North Dakota.  It’s not like we’re expecting that here… but just looking at the muddy waters lapping at the hastily constructed levees makes one appreciate living in less flood prone neighborhoods.

Today’s just a minute is a re-play of Mr. Van (Anthony) Jones – who is described in an Internet posting as a Tennessee boy who ‘made good’ --- although that title is somewhat challenged.

Van has major ivy-league scholastic credentials and lots of neighborhood organizing etc. accolades on his belt. But calling Congressional members words we don’t print on this (or many more) blogs earned him a shorter stay in Mr. Obama’s favor than I believe he expected.

The word is he is yearning for the kind of ‘clout’ (If that’s the right word.) which the Tea Party folks have accumulated over the 12-14 months of their existence in the current iteration. They were ‘adopted’ more than a year ago by the parade lead by talk-show host broadcaster Glenn Beck – who has carved out quite a spot for himself in week-day radio and even a Sunday re-play commands high enough ratings on radio to get the Fox News radio net to carry it on Sundays.

The questioning I ran across in my Internet browsing was can he (Jones) command enough of an audience consistently to warrant he continuation of the radio-TV world Mr. Beck seems to be leading?  Obviously he believes he is… as he strikes out on his own – and I think is proposing – or at least has some plans – for a network type arrangement for the material he’s been conjuring up this last year and a half (or so) on the FOX TV net?  I’m no experienced guru in that world – but there are lots of broadcasters I’ve missed the mark on – mostly because I’m not in that world 24/7 and really don’t have the experience to be able to tell much even if I operated in that ambit.

So… the best I can do is say “we’ll see.”  (Not very daring is it?) Reacting personally, I think most programming – even the good stuff – tends to have a somewhat fixed shelf-life.  Although the lengthy runs of some of the TV soaps into the 20 year+ categories really astounds me.  (I don’t think I’ve ever even seen half a program… which probably tells more about me than the program.)

Anyway… I’m looking – and if/when I see something interesting… I’ll post it here and you’re welcome to react. I don’t however issue warranties. (J)

Cordially, IN HIM

“JUST A MINUTE”

CAN “VAN” JONES START A LIBERAL TEA PARTY

Just a Minute: “Van,” Jones – who complains he’s simply the target of Glenn Beck’s attacks – has rejoined the “Green Jobs” think-tank he left when summoned to White House service for President Obama. But his high profile offenses and vulgar language directed at Congressional Republicans earned him an ouster from the Obama Administration in September 2009.

A few months later, however, – according to the Washington Post – he’s returned to the CAP – Center for American Progress (CAP) welcomed back by John Podesta – friend of the erstwhile White House Chief of staff and soon to be former CIA director, Leon Panetta. Jones is jealous of the attention and power of the Tea Party. He wonders publically, if people like himself – can start their own. He’s admitted to being a [quote] “full flown radical” and “Communist”.

He’s a graduate of Yale law school, also holds a joint appointment at Princeton, -- a distinguished visiting fellow in both the Center for African American Studies and the Woodrow Wilson School for Political Affairs.

Well, … looks as if he ought to be able to form some kind of party.
