STICKS AND STONES AND BROKEN BONES -- Just A Minute Radio for Monday June 110606

Good Day on a New Week…

We had something on the order of pea-sized hail here at home Sunday afternoon about dusk.  I had been hearing T-storm warnings from the part of NC which resides just at the top of our county – across the Blue Ridge Parkway into North Carolina.  At this writing I don’t know just how much damage there was from the winds (apparently mostly straight line – no talk of tornadoes) and hail.  Largest hail I saw reported was ‘quarter-sized’ -- I think our largest here was about nickel-sized…

The heavy downpour did beat down some pansies… (I think they are about heat-exhausted  but still trying anyway) – and my prize hibiscus which I’ve nurtured through the winter and spring… has been turning in some beautiful big blooms since I fertilized it a bit and kept water in the pot.  But today the hail made a rather ragged mess of the bloom down on one side of the plant… and damaged some leaves. But in the wisdom of God’s creation… I think for this go-round it will likely survive to bloom again some other day.  We’ve got lots more HOT weather in the forecasts… and it looks like this is going to be a turbulent summer… which I think is better than a long term drought.

However – turning to politics… the rain/hail – whatever, didn’t cool off things in the political world… and today’s blog is about what may become the ‘theme’ for the tea-party and the energetic Republicans who want to see a change in the Presidency.  Peggy Noonan wrote her usual expansive weekend column… which is often quite good (depending on your perspective) and at least shows a lot of research and thoughtfulness… This time she wrote on – well I guess you’d call it “theme sentences” which she says Presidents are often known by… sort of a political short hand.

She says “He made it worse.” Is likely to be the ‘shorthand theme’ of the coming election. It does have the advantage of being only four words – and none of those difficult to remember.

You remember James Carville was ‘infamous’ with his Clinton Exulting slogan: “It’s the economy, stupid!” – Well he may have set the stage for the GOP and the TEA Party folks to do a little (or big) end-around run. Peggy Noonan isn’t a Republican partisan… she bailed-out of George Bush’s GOP effort a couple of years back – so she stands on the ‘conservative’ side – not necessarily the GOP front. But it looks as if she may have hit a ‘lode’ with the “He made it worse.” – line… We’ll see… at least it doesn’t take a graduate degree in logic to comprehend. (J).

Well… it’s another hot week a-comin’ on the weather front… so I need my beauty sleep while putting this baby to bed.

See you during the next week if not before.

Cordially, IN HIM

“JUST A MINUTE”

STICKS AND STONES AND BROKEN BONES

Just a Minute: Clair Boothe Luce – a multi-faceted figure in American politics and diplomacy – said all Presidents have an operative sentence – providing the illustration that few Americans have difficulty identifying the President who (quote) “… fought to hold the Union together and and end slavery.” – Most will recognize  Abraham Lincoln.

FDR is identified by:.” “He brought America through economic collapse and fought a world war.”

Peggy Noonan in her weekly column of The Wall Street Journal, asks who springs to mind when you say “He made it worse?” and writes the name associated with that is Barack Obama. She believe Americans will identify him as the one responsible for the econcomic collapse -- the inability to come to a conclusion and correction on the current and future deficits -- and believes Republicans and independents will pick --  “He made it worse.” as the shorthand I.D. that will stick to Mr. Obama the already announced Democrat candidate.

A quick check of weekend news columns finds several other major columnists have already latched on to the “He made it worse.” theme.
