LET'S GO FOR SCHOOLS THAT WORK! -- Just A Minute Radio for Thursday 110303

Great to have you with us here on the program today.  It’s Thursday and I *thought* I read somewhere in my searching around for current story material –

That we should expect possibly 1-2 inches of Snow on Thursday or Friday mornings.

Well… !!! I thought I must have missed something!  But I think someone else has missed something… today is Thursday and I did NOT hear anything about snow for today --  or anything of that nature for the next week… but “that nature” sometimes fools us.  I’ve been surprised at the warmth of the weather overall since the Groundhawg gave his opinion to the folks at Punxsatawny (now I can’t even figure out how to spell it) PA… that we should look for six more weeks of winter…

That’s the way it turns out… everybody’s gonna be wrong sometimes. Even Charlie S.  and Mommar G. – (Seems like he’s really got one rail a-missin’ on his rocker… I think that’s the old legend about being ‘off your rocker.’)

In any case we have a story like Punxatawny Phil or Mr. Ghadahfi in the news most every day. We could sure do with more facts or real observations and fewer rants from rats in sheep’s clothing. (Sorry sheep… didn’t mean to cast you down.) Anyway… some of these stories wear awfully thin.  I could do with some shorter stories. I’ve heard more than enough about M. Jackson., L. Lohan  and C. Sheen… Just chuck the papers in the trashcan… or flip off the TV or radio… we can do with less of that stuff… I even think poor Wisconsin has had folks there in the capital who dug a hole it will be a long time filling in or climbing out of. – and that’s too bad.

But eventually the clouds will roll away… and the sun will come out… Praise the Lord!

Cordially, IN HIM

Jack

“JUST A MINUTE”

LET’S GO FOR SCHOOLS THAT WORK!

Just a Minute: -- Maryland, like most states, has some poorly performing schools and teachers. They’ve begun a program called Knowledge Is Power Program or KIPP – its Charter schools, another kind of public school – approved for an extended school day – remedial program.  But that approval is expiring.

The AFT Union says it can be extended only for one year – which undercuts the core of these independent public schools. Allowing the schools which created the problem, curtail Charter schools, defeats Charter’s ability to improve the results. There are only two KIPP schools and they go for extra classroom hours to boost achievement for disadvantaged and minority students.

KIPP teachers get paid extra because they work extra. So they’re at the top of the Baltimore pay scale – which causes AFT protests – and previously caused cuts and lay-offs. KIPP lets the school board know they cannot continue on a year-by-year basis because they can’t attract personnel – they need more permanence.

Should teacher’s whose performance has been poor hold back those willing to work extra to help disadvantaged students?

Anyone ever hear the Dog in the Manger” story?
