ROUGH, TOUGH ROAD AHEAD -- Just A Minute for Friday 11-07-08

Welcome to the first Friday of The President Elect – Obama.

We might well *wish* the election process had produced different results – but this is the way it came out and despite all the efforts to jimmy the ballot boxes – some of which may well have been successful – it appears we are headed down this road at least for the foreseeable future. I mentioned scripture in yesterday’s program I believe good to repeat here:

“I exhort therefore, that first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;” (1Timothy 2:1-3.)

These were instructions the Apostle Paul wrote to his young son (his convert), Timothy, as he began to minister to the believers in the church near Ephesus. It was likely written between AD 61-64 and gives Timothy detailed instructions on how to select and treat elders and deacons; how to confront false teaching and how to handle problems and problem individuals in the congregation. So Paul was “praying without ceasing” for Timothy and his ministry as well as for his health and safety.

We take instruction from Paul in the New Testament as to how we as Bible believers and followers of Christ, should behave and treat one another. It’s a rich little epistle and worthy of study. We think the companion volume – 2 Timothy – is probably the last epistle the old Apostle wrote before he was executed by the Roman government.

So… living in those times – under that kind of government was no picnic. But if you’ll read Romans, the letters to Timothy, Titus and others mentioned in Acts – you’ll find always a respect for the civil government, even though it might be corrupt. It’s worthy of study – especially during these difficult times – as well as those which may be in store.

All that to remind you [I’m a sort of Johnny one note  on this] that we are to be respectful and obedient to the civil “powers that be” – rendering unto Caesar the things that are his and unto God the things that belong to HIM… namely *us*. And it’s equally obvious in the scriptures we are to obey the civil authorities up to the point they tell us to disobey or do things in opposition to the laws of God. At the beginning of the book of Acts when Paul and his friends are commanded by the religious rulers no longer to speak in Jesus’ name – Paul asks them if they think it’s better to obey God or men?  The answer is obvious. That’s why it’s *so* important to know what the Bible teaches and ‘hide it in our hearts.’

Well… so much for this tumultuous week. See you, Lord willing, next Monday.

            Cordially, IN HIM

            Jack

“JUST A MINUTE”

ROUGH, TOUGH ROAD AHEAD

Just A Minute – Mr. Obama’s win disappears like froth on a root-beer float as he soon learns saying, doesn’t make it so. Chuck Colson has experience, having been in the Watergate White House with ethics on ‘hold’ – now he’s proven himself a genuine Christian reformer with accomplishments – not just promises. He says: (quote) “The new President will surely need our prayers because he and his administration face huge, serious challenges to the health of our nation and to peace in the world—challenges that…neither he nor any government on earth will have the power to overcome without divine aid.”

Answering the question – “Why has America become so depraved – He quotes Alexandr Solzhenitsyn: “I recall” – said he -- “hearing a number of older people [say] about the great disasters that [befell] Russia: ‘Men have forgotten God; that's why all this has happened.’”

“So this is no time for Christians to go into the bunkers. …  Pray for the new President and his Administration … this is a time to love our neighbors and to hunger for God and His righteousness.” – I say Amen to that.
