BACK OFF AND GAIN PERSPECTIVE -- Just a Minute for Monday 11-17-08

            Howdy folks –

Seems like it’s gremlin time again. Got a flash note from my computer that something in the memory compartment is acting a bit sick – and the machine ate part of my homework… which had to be re-done. Not comfortable riding this bicycle when one wheel is acting like it wants to get off. But we’ll take the hammer to it or something. Seems like things want to go ‘nuts’ with a computer when it gets to be about three years old… then it wants to retire. I call it the civil-service syndrome. J  But I shouldn’t because my Dad was a railway postal clerk who began working back about 1929 when the big crash hit. He was faithful to his calling as a government worker through his career of over thirty years.

Anyway… let us hope things in every direction are on the mend. We’ll at least plan to be happy for a few days. I’ve heard a wise saying that “Happiness is a choice.” And I think in light of the letters the Apostle Paul wrote from Roman jails and prisons – it must be so. Dr. Bob Jones, Sr. used to say – “Paul didn’t know much about the hotels in the towns where he went, but he could sure tell you a lot about their jails.”

It is a rather amazing story when one begins to look into it. What a 180 degree turn around for Paul. The book entitled “The Acts of the Apostles” in our English Bibles someone has said might well have been called “The Acts of the HOLY SPIRIT;” and read in most any light it’s a very exciting letter. Those who know me well, know I don’t use ‘exciting’ very often.

I find it to be quite ‘exciting’ to read Acts Ch. 17 vs 5 and 6 – Where the King James Bible says of the Jews of Thessalonica “which believed not” – gathered the people, and set all the city in an uproar … and cried out to the rulers of the city – “These that have turned the world upside down have come hither also …”  How *wonderful* to be numbered among those who have ‘turned the world upside down.

I guess that must be what Richard Dawkins or Christopher Hitchins are so angry about when they aim their arrows at Christian believers.

Anyway… we’re thinking about things more eternal and purposeful when we get our minds off the ills of the moment and take stock of how God is working in our world today. Take some time to think and pray about it.

            Cordially, IN HIM

“JUST A MINUTE”

BACK OFF AND GAIN PERSPECTIVE

JUST A MINUTE: Write a wise saying” the aphorism goes – “and your name will live forever.” We just can’t remember who wrote it.

This conundrum got me working on a JUST A MINUTE script over the weekend. I was seeking a non-political subject since everybody’s tired of politics.

So, looking up ‘conundrum’ to discover its etymology – I had to first look up etymology. It dates from 1298: the origin and development of a word – the combination of two Greek words – but Conundrumturned out to be a bit more difficult. I finally traced it down via the OED as – In 1596, the Oxford University slang for “pedant” also “whim,” or, later around 1790, “riddle, puzzle.” Like, ‘What’s black and white and red all over?’ Also the ponderous, pseudo Latin word that was once thought the height of humor among the learned.

By the way – the riddle’s answer’s not a newspaper. … It’s an embarrassed Zebra.  See, I got your mind off that ‘dreaded subject’ even if it was only for, “JUST A MINUTE.”
