"OLD" FRIENDS AND "NEW" FACES SHOW UP IN PROTESTS -- Just A Minute for Tuesday 111018

Every day is a new ‘tomorrow’ – Every day is the world made new.

Oh my the Internet does marvelous things.  And those little 4S TV’s you can hold in your hand are even more ‘cute’.  But I’ll let you in on my secret. I suppose I’m the only guy on the block who doesn’t want one. (J) Why?  My pockets bulge too much already with just me in ‘em – much less another TV set.

 

Then the bigger gripe I’ve got is – well I bought my first computer-printer etc. back about 1982… it was a DOS TRS-80 sold by Radio Shack. I did that because I knew virtually nothing about computers… other than that I had to pay about $85 to have my client’s 13,000 name and address list printed out… and more if I wanted mailing labels done. Well… smart little me… I figured I could save the client a lot of money by buying my own computer and we’d go from there.

 

Well there’s a LOT more to the story.. but that old cptr… had a ram of 68kb… and a speed about as slow… but for me it was a monster… I spent half of my nights getting it to work. Still I think had I contracted for a computer at one store, the program at another, the printer at still another I would have *never* seen the thing print one pass of my address list. But it did the job… with a lot of help and frustration on my part.

 

The first internet access I had I believe had a top speed of something like 13 wpm… it was slow… and I was ignorant.  I spent three nights trying to get the thing to work.. following the instructions microscopically … Do you know WHY it wouldn’t follow the commands I copied out of the instruction book?  BECAUSE I DIDN’T TYPE IN ALL CAPS! That’s why… and there wasn’t a stitch of that instruction that I could *ever* find in the two or three large binders of instructions. Can you get the idea I was irritated?  Here I was saving the client money… and tearing out my hair.  That’s why I have such sparse hair today. (J) It’s true!

 

Well… I gotta quit… the arthritis is giving me a late night fit.

 

So… Lord willing we’ll communicate with you tomorrow from FairPlay… and the Bait Shop and Sushi Bar crowd will be on hand. At least that’s my plan.  I don’t know just what we’ll talk about – perhaps our paths will cross with those of Mr. “O” and the Canadian-built busses. At’s how we get JOBS in America… we drive ‘em back across the border at Niagara Falls. (J)

          Just a Minute: Editorial writer Dorothy Rabinowitz – she of the sharp tongue and stiletto wit – leads the current charge to become the Wall Street Journal’s Editorial “Wicked Witch of the West”. She scours the streets of “Old New York”  looking for something politically scintillating or new outrages by street protesters now that John Fund has moved over to new slot at The American Spectator leaving Rupert Murdoch’s political gossip tank floundering.

          Other Journal editors like Paul Gigot and James Freeman in the Wall St. stable show up in the slot which once was a genuine source of new political “news” five times a week under Fund’s lead. At that time they often cranked fresh news into the slightly stale editorial experiment. But now, since Fund has jumped ship to a more ‘independent’ paper, most of the ‘verve’ and ‘edge’ has trickled out of the Journal’s editorial experiment.

          Trotting out some of the old-timers just doesn’t cut it. But wait… CBS just cut out  old Andy Rooney from his forever Sunday evening ‘groan-and-gripe’ slot. Could he resuscitate the old Journal’s  breathless political crew? <> I’m Jack Buttram. (END)

NEW DETERMINATION IN SHORT SUPPLY

Welcome to a new and exciting week breakfast (and dinner) clubbers.  We have encountered our problems of production today… but even AT&T has their problems from time to time. This is one of those days.

 

Last night (Sunday evening) we began to encounter problems with the computers… we don’t know what it is – but the teleco tells me it is in the line…

 

Which could mean anything from coast to coast I suppose…maybe some of Blackberry’s Jam got caught in the works.  Obviously it really browned the reputation of RIM (Research in Motion) and eventually turned out to be a week long problem that spread across five continents best I could make out.

 

But mostly little people like us didn’t have huge macro failures.  Nonetheless… it was disruptive enough to people who can’t LIVE it seems without texting or dingledangling with their earphones plugged into their brains… or their thumbs at the ready…  You know all the stories of engineers and bus drivers texting while they go merrily weaving along the high way… well… it’s coming home to roost among the toddler set it seems.

 

I see the little stock traders in their cribs fussing with each other – and wonder if these are being trained to be TV stars of tomorrow. 

 

Ah well… as old pilots NOT bold pilots know, everything goes wrong sometimes… and usually at the worst possible time… so plan for it. (J)

 

We tried to plan… but ended up using the equivalent of the pony express – shanks mare – to get the message through.

 

So.. we hope the rest of the week is NOT as adventurous and free of trouble. But I’m expecting the worst and hoping for the best during the coming political season. 

 

The major activity that provides the MOST productivity and good results is PRAYER!  I’ll certify that any day of the week.

NEW DETERMINATION IN SHORT SUPPLY

          Just a Minute: New help is *possibly* on the horizon. Peggy Noonan’s WSJ week-end Journal column describes what we’re gonna need going into our national transitional period. A TSA airport official checking her luggage remarked since Steve Jobs is gone and so is Johnny Cash and Bob Hope – we now have a severe shortage of Jobs, Cash and Hope.

          It’s the joke of the week I guess. I read Mortimer Zuckerman’s interview also. He’s long-time owner of U.S. News and World Report and New York Daily News and although he’s Canadian and not a Republican he expressed his admiration for President Reagan’s decisiveness and President Bush’s immediate action in getting Russia to release an employee quickly and efficiently. His stated judgment is President Obama has lost the ability to exercise moral authority by his mismanagement.

          It’s also been reported some of the girls who were “cheerleader supporters” of the newly minted President back in January of ‘09 have now decided to switch sides. Do you think it’s possibly the beginning of a movement? … A landslide maybe? We’d better be ready.

EGYPT -- ALWAYS THE WEAK REED -- NEEDS HELP -- for Just A Minute Radio for Friday 111014

And the bus arrives at the end of the week.  Thankfully we look forward to a day or so of something different from that daily grind.

 

The idea behind today’s and yesterday’s programs is to jolt our thinking into something other than what’s going on in Washington. We do get a smattering of other information but we have to work at it. By the time the weekend goes by our brain cells will begin to work on things other than Democrats and Republicans. It’s pretty easy to get stuck in a rut. (L)

 

BTW… what’s the difference between a grave and a rut?  The walls are steeper on the grave.--- So… I’m working on thinking of something other that what Mr. Obama is doing today – or may be doing tomorrow. Somewhere in this weekend there is a State Dinner.  For the Korean President I think…

 

Anyway… it will be something different. And perhaps you can take time to read a book or study your Bible or *something* that’s not in the RUT called up by the TV or radio conversation.  Here’s a good idea… if the sun comes out see if you can capture a picture of the autumn leaves.  They won’t be here forever you know. (J)

 

So… I suggest a variation from the well-worn thought paths the newspaper or TV news or whatever else leads you into.  Wiggle those little grey cells in between the ears.  They’re good for something else.

EGYPT – ALWAYS THE WEAK REED – NEEDS HELP

          Just a Minute: We’re practically ignoring huge caches of weapons from Libya now entering Egypt. They flood black markets in the unstable Sinai Peninsula. Rick Santorum, sounds the alarm about that Gaza border. 

          You may recall Mr. Santorum supported Sen. Arlen Specter when George Bush was President – President Bush was implored to support conservative Pat Toomey – but he stuck with Specter with much regret.

          Mr. Romney gave a lot of poor advice in his race to be governor of Massachusetts. He would re-word it today. But I also look at the virtually impossible task of leading the Salt Lake Olympics out of a red ink-disaster into a total financial winner.

          The old saying in politics is: “You can’t beat somebody with nobody.” The urgent question facing America in 2012 is who can rescue America from a red-ink Tsunami and put us on the upward road in 2013. I like a lot of the candidates – but right now I think Mitt can be most likely to put us on the right road.  But I want the Lord to lead us all.

VIOLENCE IN EGYPT BLAMED ON COPTS -- QUESTIONED -- Just a Minute for Thursday 111013

Somewhat out of the ordinary things seem to be happening here on the back lot.

 

We plan one thing – but we stumble on to another. I noted in preparing the material for today’s program an objection Sen. Santorum expressed about persecutions of Christians going on in Egypt. I marked it down to go back to. When I got around to it… well I didn’t have time on that day… and we may run out of time this week.  But we’ll try to pursue it nonetheless.

 

Possibly you’ve heard the word “Copts” – spelled c-o-p-t-s – mentioned from time to time in stories of Hosni Mubarak being deposed as Egypt’s leader. In the most recent objections in the streets of CAIRO and other places there has been bloodshed and fighting. It’s mentioned in today’s program. Unless something more important comes along I expect we’ll delve into the subject even further tomorrow. I hope it will be something that you, if you’re a Christian, will find interesting and want to follow.

 

I won’t take a lot of time today… and especially if you’ve not heard or read today’s program.  It’s kind of like trying to keep more than three juggling balls in the air at once. I’m not any good even at just two.

 

But stay with us – and follow the issue. I think you’ll find it interesting and perhaps the Lord will impress something on your heart and mind as we go through this. And… well.. at least it’s a departure for a while from the long slog we’ve got ahead of us to get to November 6th 2012.

But violence in Egypt is reaching crisis proportions as the country’s ruling military council tries to calm its worst crisis since ex-President Hosni Mubarak, was forced out of power. The council denies it was responsible for the violence in which at least 25 people, mostly Coptic Christians, died over the weekend.

          The “Copts” claim to be descended from the apostle Mark’s early evangelical efforts in the first century – and were the majority of those claiming to be Christian in the 7th and 8th centuries, though they definitely constitute a minority in today‘s population.

          Most of those killed are likely Coptic protesters – except one or two soldiers -- Al-Ahram, Egypt’s largest newspaper, headlined “Violence and Blood in Coptic demonstrations…” The scenario – was very familiar under Mubarak’s regime. Amateur TV showed army vehicles recklessly driving amongst demonstrators trying to leap out of their way in terror.

          America supplies about 1.3 billion dollars of military aid each year. Let us pray today for peace in Egypt. <> I’m Jack Buttram.  (END)

MITT TAKES THE LEAD AT ROUNDTABLE -- for JUST A MINUTE RADIO - Wednesday 111012

Well good Wednesday to you – we’re in the full Hunter’s moon phase, in case you didn’t look it up in the Almanac.

 

Something about the veggies all being harvested and tucked into root cellers or something similar. Also some old tales about putting up what amounts to a scarecrow I guess… or something to scare people rather than crows. I couldn’t make out which from the stories I was getting. It’s all stuff with candy corn, and trick or treat and hobgoblins and the rest. (BTW – there’s still the full Beaver moon; and the full  Cold moon to look forward to for November and December.)

 

I remember as a kid Halloween and the early cold winds of winter that were just getting their cheeks puffed out. I rode a bike to deliver papers – except when the slick ice came after a snow in winter… then there was nothing to do but carry the paper carrying bag with ROANOKE TIMES written on its side… and stumble, slip and slide the best way around the neighborhood.

 

On Sunday’s when the papers were *very* heavy we would occasionally build a fire with the paper wrappers the bundles came in … and some sticks if we thought far enough ahead…and we could imagine ourselves warm before starting out on the route. --- Our home was heated by a coal-fired furnace with a big convection hot air heater grill on the first floor – which was very welcome when coming back in off the route. If the cold weather had set in – our house was in the middle of the route… so I’d try to stop off for a cup of cocoa in the middle of delivering the route… to defrost a bit. But riding a bike in a hilly neighborhood if there was ice on the streets and sidewalks was out of the question.  It just became the ‘slog’ season. Slogging around the route… every day…and once more to collect.  Of course it was worth it… I became a man didn’t I. (J)

 

Halloween… we never did anything more serious than soap a window or two… and throw corn kernels on the porch of a friend… The were candy kernels… I think… I didn’t like them much.  Halloween sort of came and went on its on if it was an early winter… Oh yeah…. Not winter yet… that didn’t come until two or three days before Christmas.  But it’s all pleasant memories now… reasonably pleasant…. Now that it’s over. (J)  Stories to tell the grandkids.

 

Well…we can’t sign off now…two more days till the weekend.  So … hang in there.

MizP: Ah Like him OK – but he din’t have a lot ta say.

BB: That wuz b’cause they seemed ta have a lotta questions fer Mr. Cain.

MizP: Mr. Cain held up OK… but Miz Bachman wuz out numbered awl rite.  

Jack: You think she was overwhelmed or outclassed. 

MizP: No – not perzakly… but Ah thank hit’s hard ta be th lone sheep mongst wolves.

Homer: You thunk them men wuz wolves?

MizP: No – they wuz other ladies a-astin’ th’ questions… an they wuz polite.

BB: Well – Ah thot hit was th’ bestest of awl of them so far.

Jack: You thought they mixed it up well enough? 

Homer: Well… Ah don’t b’leve hit was ezakly a wawk in th’ park.

Jack: Did you pick a winner? 

Homer: Well… yeah…

Jack: You wanna share it with the listeners?

Homer: Well… Ah’d rather they awl meks up they own mind…

BB: You don’t want them ta jist foller you – rite?

Homer: No… Ah jist wants ta keep my powder dry.

MizP: In case you changes yo… mind?

Jack: I think our time’s up for today.

MizP: You keepin’ yo powder dry too?

Jack: No – just trying to prolong the interest. See you all next week.

GETTING TO THE STARTING GATE IS DIFFICULT -- for JUST A MINUTE RADIO on Tuesday 111011

Wonderful to be communicating with you at the speed of light.

 

No – it’s not my effortless typing speed, or even that I have figured out how to make my computer speech responsive. (I know the program is in there somewhere and have even fiddled with it a little, but it seemed rather tedious and slow requiring a lot of corrections – which I’m already doing with my twisted hunt and peck typing system.

 

See, like most budding journalists (that was then, this is now) I didn’t have time to learn how to type properly. So while I can type fairly fast it’s full of errors – and some funny words result. However now that I have an ‘automatic’ typo corrector I get by pretty well. And am greatly appreciative to Bill Gates & Company for coming up with that beauty.

 

However, I’m off the subject. The computer is also very smart… but I find it’s not as smart as “HAL” – one of the earliest computers to make it into the movies. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the whole movie… just bits and pieces where the two guys (as I remember) were trying to outsmart “HAL” who was obviously more skilled than they were – he could read lips and almost read their minds as to what they were going to do next. 

 

My computer is no where near that smart… I got stuck about midnight last night trying to get this out on deadline… and the computer really did have a glitch – for once it was not me… and I couldn’t figure it out and all of my ancillary gurus upon whom I call so often would have been at least irritated if I had awakened them at that hour. So… what did I do?  Well… I gave up.

 

I went out to the kitchen and made myself another mug (the second of the evening) of a brand of tea that has only a name like “BLUE ROYAL” on it. It’s not particularly distinctive but suits me fine… and I sat for about 25 minutes reading my daily Bible Schedule… both in the New Testament and in Isaiah 45,46,47 and when I had finished all that and had a wonderful talk with the Lord… for the Bible tells us plainly it is “Christ in you the hope of Glory.” And I rely on that because I’ve been reading and believing these wonderful words from God for five or six decades now… but this was different. I didn’t hear the Lord speaking audibly to me – but He assured me – through the words He knew I would be reading just at this time – that He would be guiding me in finding the problem.

 

Well… I won’t go through all the detail – but it was a wonderful time… from about 1:45 AM this morning… until sometime after 3AM when I’ll be finishing this typing… I found a way to troubleshoot the problem. The machine found the problem… (So I still don’t know what it was.) and fixed it and shortly I’ll be wrapping this whole thing up and putting it to bed. I am overjoyed AND grateful to the Lord for answering my prayer so specifically.

May I just mention one more thing. My Grandson, Colin Harding, was almost killed last Wednesday evening when he was riding his bike with some friends – his employer and some others with them – out in Lubbock, Texas where he is/was planning to go to school – he was broadsided by a pickup driver who boosted him across three traffic lanes… broke his leg, some ribs, his nose, some deep cuts and survived. (He had forgotten to wear his biking helmet) But praise the Lord he came through it alive. He could have easily been killed.

 

As I write this his mother and oldest brother are with him – he’s been released from the hospital in their care. I don’t know what arrangements they have managed to make for living, sleeping, giving him his meds… taking him to therapy etc. But the Lord does… and I’m so glad to tell you the Lord does take care of us whether the needs are great or small… HE IS ABLE to comfort and care for us in every situation.

 

So… we don’t know how this will end… but we do know the ONE who created the entire universe and who knows when even a sparrow falls. I share that with you because somehow God wanted you to know this – and for me to write this so you could read it – and He has HIS word for you too.

GETTING TO THE STARTING GATE IS DIFFICULT

          Just a Minute:  OK class get pen and paper ready – please pay attention.

          We once had an orderly system of primaries and caucuses which evaporated when Florida and restless Arizona ignored the Republican National Committee rules and moved their elections around. – So --  now it looks like Florida will vote January 31st while Arizona will move to February 28th. Neither was supposed to vote before March 6th – and the first four states are gonna defend their privileges and are moving up their dates losing half their delegates (but since Iowa has a non binding caucus, they won't be penalized).

          Even the Romney campaign tried to issue what one newspaper called a ‘non-denial denial.’  Well I say we’ve either manufactured a circular firing squad or are planning for Rugby in the mud.

          The end result is: Nevada votes on January 14 and South Carolina on January 21st. Which means New Hampshire moves to January 3rd and Iowa to December 26th – What a mess? Happy New Year everybody.

STEVE JOBS APPLE'S CHIEF DEPARTS -- for Just A Minute Radio on Monday 111010

I was rather surprised this Saturday when opening up the weekend edition of the Wall St. Journal.

 

There was a full three-quarter page portrait of Steve Jobs who took leave of this world last Wednesday.  I know he is much revered in the music and electronic fields for the innovations he made in both.

 

I thought I remembered him being the ‘inventor’ certainly the prime name, associated with the McIntosh computer. Unless you’ve worked in an orchard or a supermarket you possibly don’t remember a McIntosh was (is) a variety of apple. So… I don’t know which came first the Apple or the McIntosh… I’m sure I’m probably not using the upper and lower case as Steve’s company did… I reverted back to the way I think I saw the labels printed during the times I helped my father work a small orchard in Roanoke, Virginia… I was a pre-teen.  So… maybe I’m just remembering how heavy two bushels of apples were to a kid of about 11 or 12… It was the first summer I think I saw some substantial increase in the size of my biceps – but no matter what I never really got into the weight – lifter’s class. However… it was the first pre-job job I ever had. And I do recall how much I learned to love apples.

 

Funny… I didn’t go much for gardening – which my Dad, being a graduate of Auburn University in Alabama, and teaching what they called then ‘vocational agriculture – knew about. We had several varieties in this small orchard inside the city limits… it was about a quarter of a block – and we had Romes, and Winesaps, Red Delicious and Golden Delicious… plus a few more that I don’t recall as well as I did the ‘eatin’ apples. We also made cider out of the culls… and the ones that were damaged by the birds or the hail… or the frost… Frost didn’t usually leave many apples for cider making.

 

In any case… I’m not as familiar with the newer varieties.  Granny Smith’s are good in pies… but they had not come along at that time. I do really like the Gala apples developed in Australia or New Zealand I believe. I also liked the Golden Delicious somewhat better than the Red delicious… but they didn’t keep as well. Winesaps were good for keeping on through the winter in proper storage… and… I’m going on too long… with a memory that’s too short. But I still like apples.

STEVE JOBS, APPLE’S CHIEF DEPARTS

          Just a Minute:  Last Wednesday a large black & White photo with the caption “Steve Jobs: 1955-2011” was outside Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino California and   flags flew at half mast.

          The only statement said: “Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve our lives. His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to … all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts.”         The only mention of faith revealed Jobs as a Buddhist … born in San Francisco he started Apple Computer in his parent’s garage with a friend Steve Wozniak 1976.

          In 2005 he spoke about his illness, a ‘rare form’ of pancreatic cancer, at a Stanford University commencement he was awarded an honorary degree and said: “Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life… Because almost everything — all external expectations -- just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose.”

A GOOD MEASURE IS ACCOMPLISHMENT -- Just A Minute Radio for Friday 111007

It’s interesting for me to find the President reading off some mental script than none one on this side of the line can find.

 

For instance I certainly must have been asleep when the information came across about the wonderful things he has done with some four trillion dollars plus he has added to the nation’s debt. Fascinating figures, -- they’re just hard to rustle up on short notice.

 

More difficult it seems than AG Holder can dredge up from his memory the year old memory of being warned the visitations to the solar energy plant that had been touted in person by the President visiting the plant and having TV pictures taken – and having it held up as an example of all of the ‘green jobs’ it was earmarked to provide.  But then when the AG was asked in a hearing about it he “thought the first time he heard about it was in recent weeks in a general way.”

And despite the effusive remarks the President made about the solarheat builders – he has trouble remembering them now.

 

Oh well… it’s easy to lose track of a billion here or a billion there… eventually, as Senator Dirksen was want to remark – “It adds up to big money.” Still it would be nice to be remembered. Oh it’s possibly due to the atmosphere in the White House which seems to have a great erasing capability when Democrat Presidents occupy it.  All the financial memory of Whitewater before Mr. Clinton became President was erased. The same thing happened – a real memory lapse rather like a black hole – when Mr. Clinton was questioned about Ms. Lewinsky. Memories just fly away sometimes I guess. We might as well get used to it between now and November of 2012.

 

Perhaps we could get a yet to be invented  21st century MemoVac that could restore all those of the Clinton era but not on such a selective basis. One never knows just what scientists will come up with. Oh I know of a few of them that hang around to speculate upon the early days of the Earth. If they need a few more billion years for whales who once walked the earth as giant creatures *BEFORE* they decided to evolve back to the oceans where things were more hospitable to them – I can understand that. What’s a billion here or a billion there?  I can adjust especially if I’ve heard the stories like the Three Bears – or the Big Bad Wolf – or even Jack and the Beanstalk – *then* I now have a memory trained to remember that stuff – it just *seemed* like a fairy tale before.

 

Well… it’s late… I’ve got things to do tomorrow… and so must sign out of this shift.  All the best.

“JUST A MINUTE”

A GOOD MEASURE IS ACCOMPLISHMENT

            Just a Minute:  Several important things are happening -- scores aren’t posted yet.   

          Steve Jobs cashed in this week. At age 56 people say he’s another Thomas Edison. I’d put him in a class with the Wright brothers, and Alexander Graham Bell. These are not necessarily icons of history, but they’ve made a difference in many lives.

          Sarah Palin, had a chance at higher office, decided not to run – this time – so has Chris Christie, Governor of New Jersey. Write these down in your journal and look back on them in 10 years. I’ve really come to admire David McCullough, a native of Pittsburg, not noted for literature but steel. He’s written at eight or nine major BIG biographies and won two Pulitzers. He shares credit for his success with his wife.  

          Why have I drifted off politics for biographies? Other things are interesting too, so if I awake some mother or child’s library interest possibly that’s the best I’m fit for at the moment. My mother read Bible stories to me before I could read. You never know where you may plant seeds that grow up into success – especially in God’s eyes.

SOMETIMES WE NEED CHRISTMAS EARLY -- for JUST A MINUTE RADIO on Thursday 111004

G’day folks… interesting news came across the wires last evening – I don’t know how widely it’s been reported today.

 

Possibly you’ve heard the AMERICAN FAMILY ASSOCIATION headed by Tim Wildmon. They’ve had a campaign running for several years now because of the stories that pop up after Thanksgiving in these recent years in which there are increasing pressures building to just remove Christmas altogether from everything.

 

Sometimes it sounds like the kinfolks of Ebenezer Scrooge trying to scrub the memory of Christmas Past, Present, or Future from our Welcoming at the end of the calendar year. And with the present nut crop that’s decided they want to protest – they’ve picked Wall Street, among other places to set up their raucous effrontery. However, they’ve misplaced whatever it is they’re protesting about. I think they’ve missed a hard left turn and lost their way – they think this is Europe or something?

 

When you can understand – or get a semblance of what they are trying to say or protest about it just gets silly.

 

For several years that’s been mounting and apparently they have about reached the pinnacle of nonsense. Send them out to the woods to hug some trees rather than clutter up the city streets. Anyway – I’m off the subject.

 

Some of these nutcases want to suppress Christmas and all that pertains to it of any dimension – and have aimed their ire at Nativity scenes or Crèches – even colored lights that decorate Christmas trees even if they have no particular religious meaning… it’s nutty. So today we share the news with you that the American Family Association – which has been faithfully promoting those things that strengthen the family. So if you’re for the family you’ll be pleased to hear according to AFA the ship seems to be slowly reaching a turn-around spot.

 

One of the major chains of banks has, at least for this year, decided to let their branches display a Christmas tree.  Wonderful… let’s have a playing of the Hallelujah Chorus. Perhaps others will get the idea and we can go back to saying “Merry Christmas” without hearing Scrooge saying “Humbug!” in the background. 

 

Actually the opposition is so far off the mark it’s ludicrous – but we should have places for people to play in their mental sand piles.

 

So… before I get too far off first base… just be sure to catch the program at a good time or listen to it on the Internet. Christmas is too big and too important a holiday to be derailed by the atheists and Scrooges of the world. Stick with it and be sure to say Merry Christmas (perhaps after Thanksgiving) to the grocery store clerks and anyone else you think could use a little cheering up. 

 

It’ll make you feel better too!

 

Of course we know we’re commemorating Christ Our Saviour coming to earth the first time… now it’s time for us to get serious in our firm expectation to be ready for His second appearing!  Amen!

SOMETIMES WE NEED CHRISTMAS EARLY

            Just a Minute:  Here’s good news from American Family Association.

          Last year a Texas businessman decorated a Christmas tree in a JP Morgan Chase Bank -- a favor to the manager. But the manager was told the tree must go -- so it was taken down. However the bank said later the tree could stay but it was just an exception -- they weren’t changing the policy.  

          Over the course of a year the AFA (American Family Association) continued to be in contact with the bank and asking for a policy revision. Last evening I got an e-mail message the bank has changed its policy for 2011 and will now allow branch banks to display Christmas trees on the premises. The precise language is: "Trees and menorahs will arrive the week of November 21 and may be displayed as soon as you receive them." – That’s reported from an internal memo of JP Morgan Chase Bank dated September 26, 2011.  

          AFA says: “We are slowly winning theWar on Christmas,’ and are encouraging our friends to wear an attractive lapel button created to show retailers and national companies ‘It's OK to say Merry Christmas.’"
