THE ROAD TO AVOID POVERTY - FOR Just a Minute Radio Tuesday 120612

Things are pretty busy here – tomorrow’s an election day – a very long day for old people – at the polling place from 6AM to something around 8 PM… you can hear the pseudo snores.

It’s just a day of clerical work – by the rules! Don’t mess up or you’ll spend several hours untangling things. But it’s doing one’s civic duty – and more recently to pickup a bit of change also. But you have to take an oath (which we have already done) and act with alacrity and charm – which I’m not sure we’re up to – especially once the sun heads for the horizon.

So we’ll be up with you later in the evening to find out what’s going on – because on the front lines we don’t know…not even at our own polling place. ‘

We may take a guess – but we’re not allowed to talk with reporters even if we had something salient worth saying.  So we’re in the same dark chamber as you are in and perhaps we’ll be able to talk about it in the internet exchanges tomorrow.

Fear not friends – the LORD is in control – that’s my mantra and I’m stickin’ to it!

Cordially, IN HIM

“JUST A MINUTE”

THE ROAD TO AVOID POVERTY

Just a Minute: I worked in Washington DC for (American Enterprise Institute) but saw Brookings Institute not as conservative AEI. Now comes Senior Fellow, Ron Haskins from Brookings espousing ground rules before the Senate Finance Committee, for young people, for avoiding poverty.

Before the Committee this June he said: “I want to emphasize the importance of individual initiative in reducing poverty and promoting economic success.”  He then proceeded to lay down three elementary rules by which young people can (quote) “Virtually assure they and their families will avoid poverty…”

His first rule: Complete at least a high school education; (second) Work full time; (third) wait until age 21 before getting married and having a baby.

If you follow these three rules you have less than a 2 % chance of being in poverty and a 74% chance of joining the middle class defined in 2010 as $55,000 a year  and above.

Individual effort and good decisions about the big events in life, he says, are more important than government programs. He told the Senate Finance Committee: Break these rules and the results are almost 100% reversed.

Kids… take note. <> I’m Jack Buttram.  (END)
