CHICAGO TEACHERS WANT 30% PAY INCREASE -- Just A Minute Radio for Tuesday120619

Beautiful day – and there’s no doubt about it…. The OFA says so (Old Farmer’s Almanac) Summer will officially arrive at 7:09 PM on the 20th. Maybe you want to go outside and ring a bell or something. (J)

You’ll have plenty of time to “sweat it out” during the ‘dog days of August’ or whenever. My memories of hot days go back to the 40’s maybe it was hotter then. But you never know really when one those very hot – very violent summer days can come along. But go ahead I say… some of my fondest memories of summers past are in the tag end days of summer… Out in the country it could still get hot in September – but generally the days were more moderate – but that didn’t make any difference when you had to stand in the field and pick cotton (so they say) I shouldn’t stand on any false pretenses that I picked much – but my cousins did! And they still recollect those HOT days in summer and early fall. The seasons always seem to lag a little bit.

Say HOT and I think July – and sometimes sunburn. Being somewhat red-headed and fair skinned….I didn’t tan. It went from white to red.. not much in between tan…But I guess overall remembering seasons I have more fun memories of summers than winters…but spring and fall also have their points and excellent memories. I think the key is to concentrate on the good ones and shove the bad ones back in the closet. All in all… I have very little in the way of bad memories.

Well…see you tomorrow – we’ll talk some more.  Best to all!

Cordially, IN HIM

 “JUST A MINUTE”

CHICAGO TEACHERS WANT 30% PAY INCREASE

Just a Minute:  The Chicago teacher's union has announced more than 90% of its members will strike in the event that the union and school district don't agree on a new contract by fall. Union’s leaders ask for a 30% increase over the next two years.  It illustrates how out of touch the union leaders are.

Chicago public schools currently run $700 million in the red, yet the union is demanding a 30% pay raise over the next two years. Additionally union leaders want other contract changes that could cost another $100 million. The city’s teachers are already among the nation’s highest paid while its school day is the shortest of any large school district in the nation. The average teacher gleans about $75,000, which is 50% above median Chicago family income.

As to results -- public schools graduate only about 56% and only 28% of high school students meet standards. Democrat Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants to lengthen the school day by 90 minutes while implementing a merit pay program rewarding good teachers. The mayor offer teachers a two percent pay increase next year -- union leaders say nothin’ doin’. <> I’m Jack Buttram (END)
