FREE SPEECH VS. MINORITY 'RITES' - FOR Just A Minute Radio120625

Nice to have you with us to begin a new week as we really hit summer time square on.

A perplexing cloud came over the horizon over the weekend – and I spent quite a bit of time figuring out what to do about it. So I hope you dig into it (the subject) a bit on your own. I love to learn what you come up with.

The weekend subject began with the fact of space-science and other things that he’s done so well with in writing being a big part of the subject matter. I did a fair amount of research into FARENHEIT 451 – which I had recalled by a slightly different title. [I was graduating from college the year that was published and so concentrating on getting a family started and moving around and paying bills etc. etc. So I didn’t have time to read a lot of books…]

Anyway I thought it was linked up with the Biblical question about how many times one should be forgiven. (Peter’s question and Jesus answer – “Not seven times seven but seventy time seven…) in other words there ought to be an infinite number of times for forgiveness.  Well I thought Bradbury was building his story around that… ‘Twas not the case. It was the burning temperature of paper – books presumably… and I didn’t quite get the whole thing until it was explained to me.

However, be that as it may – Mr. Bradbury also clarified what he meant when he added a coda (I had to look that one up too – it means a conclusion added to a pronouncement of some kind… ) Essentially, he was saying he was against the minorities (like people who didn’t like a book and worked to get it recalled) he would just as soon see them burned in their own bonfire.

Well that’s a long way around my elbow to get to my thumb.  Sorry I bothered you with it. I am resolved to read Mr. Bradbury’s book which I understand sort of marked the peak of his literary output. I’m resolved to do more reading. (J) But that’s how today’s script – which is supposed to follow below on this page – came about.

Drop me a line if you care to discuss it and I’ll give it a whirl – though I don’t promise anything very literary.

Have a great day and come back again soon.

All the best.

Cordially IN HIM,

Jack

“JUST A MINUTE”

FREE SPEECH VS. MINORITY ‘RITES’

Just a Minute: I’ve wrestled with Free Speech vs. Minority Rights issues, Ninety one year old Ray Bradbury died in his California home just two weeks ago. His 1953 novel, “Fahrenheit 451” -- staple of high school English tests from this highly recognized multi-faceted writer, caused me think through an awful lot of “on the other hand” scenarios.

Are we fearful of backlash from Islamic extremists or the anti-Wall Street marchers? Do we bow to the will of the anti-ethanol crowd or the ‘stop the deep well oil- frackers’?

In an addition to his ’79 novel’s printing -- an angry Bradbury raged: …  (Quote) ”It’s a mad world and will get madder [if] the minorities, be they dwarf or giant … simpleton or sage interfere with aesthetics.”

Which calls up a broadcast I often heard repeated by Dr. Bob Jones, Sr. -- “A man comes down the sidewalk swinging his fist, but his freedom ends where my nose begins.”

We add the “free speech” legal ruling -- one is not allowed to shout
“FIRE” in a crowded theater, and we’ve pretty well surrounded the case.

          I’m Jack Buttram. (END)
