BOOTS ON THE GROUND VS. SPOTS ON THE AIR -- Just a Minute Radio for Tuesday 120605

Time draws on a’pace – and we see the race beginning to sharpen up.

If you remember these were the fellows (and ladies too I presume) who fled from their home bases so they wouldn’t have to vote on an issue they despised. They were obligated to certain unions in Wisconsin and while there was certain budgetary things they didn’t want to happen – they didn’t have the numbers to keep them from happening – or something to that effect.

The result was the equivalent of Wisconsin lockjaw and things grew pretty convoluted and difficult to manage for some winter months. Governor Walker got himself some resolutions aimed at getting him ousted from his job – but he’s managed to hang on and we’re not quite sure just where the ship of state is sailing but it’s still afloat and some of the sailors are jumping ship.  Well that’s kind of an amorphous illustration – but it should be coming ‘round the mountain so eventually you’ll get a better glimpse – but what is at stake is keeping the ship afloat – fiscally speaking.

That’s probably a long way’s off, but it is crucial to the operations of schools and other government services which were threatened with closing down.

Can’t explain it all here – or there for that matter – but it looks as if there’s the possibility of some kind of problem solving in the not too distant future – but from all I’ve read there’s a lot of hard feelings in Wisconsin and a lot of people who used to “get along” have suspended relations for the present. Not a pleasant thing to describe. At the same time children who are supposed to be in school not being able to go to school isn’t pleasant either.

Obviously I’m not a referee but there are keepers of the peace the straightners of public policy who will eventually work out a settlement of some workable solution. AT least let us pray to that end.

See you tomorrow we’ll see how things are resulting.

Cordially, IN HIM

“JUST A MINUTE”

BOOTS ON GROUND VS. SPOTS ON THE AIR

Just a Minute: Today’s the deadline day for Wisconsin’s grudge-fight resolution. It’s knocking on doors vs. dollars on the air and devil take the hindmost. Not a pleasant prospect for a spring day – but it’s been coming for a long time.

Governor Scott Walker leads in the polling and the spending but the union leaders hope they have a hammerlock on the electorate.  Some time soon we’ll discover who has the upper hand. The long-awaited referendum is viewed in Madison as an effort to cut back on union member’s collective-bargaining rights and it’s probably a strong indicator if the Republicans have a shot at winning Wisconsin in the autumn contest for the first time since 1984.

The race will also test the dynamic which both parties expect to exercise in the fall when contested in a baker’s dozen or so battleground states.  That’ll discover the effectiveness of the Democrats’ ground organization against the fundraising advantage which the Republicans are expected to have in dollars and on TV.

Nail biting is expected to be the order of the day <> I’m Jack Buttram. (END)
