ERIC CANTOR -- PITCHING FAST SOFTBALLS - for Just A Minute Radio on Thursday 111103

When in the political game of spitballs (in the political world it’s mudballs) it is mounted as “world-series” class – so the best thing to do is stay cool, calm and collected.

It is often attributed to Winston Churchill that he said: “Democracy is the worst form of government -- except for all the others that have been tried from time to time. “… or words to that effect.

There’s been a lot of searching of libraries etc. for that quote… with result of little increased credibility.

We do have one quote from 1947 … which was well after WWII was over… and Churchill was busy writing his memoir(s) and the quote that comes from searching around that it’s more likely something Churchill picked up from someone else … like William F. Buckley or perhaps Michael Montagne – of whom it is said “he was admired in his own time more as a statesman than as an author… although he’s given credit for popularizing the essay as a legitimate art form.”

Actually I suppose one could say that about Churchill (Depending upon one’s outlook, arrogance and personal experience. J) Oh well – once again I digress.

What I intended to communicate is: Mr. Eric Cantor is obviously (at least to me) a gifted young man… I don’t think he’s 50 yet so that makes him young by my lights. He’s of Jewish origin and the little research I’ve been able to do on his family indicates his wife and all the family observes the Jewish traditions.  She is a CPA…and educator and, if I read it right, apparently a gifted mother and wife. He’s been a notable leader in the House of Representatives since he was elected and has been only about ten years climbing the ladder of leadership – which is a good record in the House.

It’s not hard to see that ego, pride and too often self-promotion are almost epidemic amongst the political class. I’ve worked around the political scene some and from first hand observance I’m pretty sure I’m right about that. BUT there are humble, hard working and honest people – although Will Rogers was one of the Oklahoma cowboy-comedians of the early 20th century – and told a lot of jokes at their expense. So I’m happy to see a man like Eric – who comes from a hard-working and sturdy background – doing well in his field.

I’m also pretty much set on the facts that anyone working in the political world works in an environment probably as dangerous as any mine field set out in war… only these mine fields destroy people more severely than losing an arm or foot or being severely wounded physically.  I suppose also that like say, bull fighting or.. more humanely – bull riding – are in their own ways equally -- even if different – dangerous to your health.

Does that mean I’m sour on all political effort?  No… it just means political power must be treated like carbolic acid… very useful – AND – if one does not pay close attention to its operation… it is VERY dangerous to one’s morals. I suppose you could call it ‘Lord Acton’s Law!’

Well… digression again – and it’s after midnight… so Good Day!

Cordially, IN HIM

Jack

“JUST A MINUTE”

ERIC CANTOR – PITCHING FAST SOFTBALLS

Just a Minute:  Majority Leader, Eric Cantor (R-VA), has successfully navigated the turbulent waters of the current House of Representatives. He’s apparently dedicated to the truth of Romans 15:1 “A soft answer turneth away wrath...”

But apparently his ‘soft answers’ thus far have not ameliorated the animosity union leaders near the University of Pennsylvania threaten. Their planned protests caused the speech there to be canceled and instead Mr. Cantor addressed a crowd in a smaller auditorium in Northwestern University’s Kellogg Business School on Friday. His major theme was: “…the basis of America is equal opportunity not equal outcome.”

His 20 minute speech got applause and appreciation describing his grandmother’s journey from religious persecution in Europe to the ownership of a small grocery store in Virginia. Her work ethic enabled her to raise two children in an apartment above the store after her husband died when she was just 30 – however the American Dream was realized when he ascended to his position of House Majority Leader. Let us pray for his success. <>I’m Jack Buttram.  (END)
