A TRYIN TA UNTIE THIS KNOT - Just A Minute Radio for Wednesday 110518

Rite smack-dab in the middle of the week… let’s hope we can get through it OK!

The stories of the folks hit so hard in the South and upper mid-west really give a face to the difficulties they are facing out that way. Perhaps the tidal waves aren’t so big and sudden and the loss of life so immediate and terrible – but the cost in human suffering in all these places weighs on the same scale and families are cast into difficulties not of their own making and are deserving of all the help we can provide as they begin the struggle to get back in gear.

In fact the crest of the flood of snow, run-off combined with the heavy rains of the spring and winter, are just as devastating and more so – because the disaster was/is a long time coming and certainly leaves footprints as large or larger in terms of human suffering. Let us unite our hearts, heads and hands in prayer as we  try to encourage them in their struggles to right the ship and continue their voyage.

The stories from up and down the entire Mississippi River basin are just tragic… from loss of life, loss of property and loss of income on -- … they are certainly deserving of our prayers and deft attention. May we each look into our own mirrors and see what we would be doing if we were on the other side.

One sobering statistic crossed my desk this week… and I may not have the numbers exactly right… but it seems suicide is so prevalent in Japan that upwards of 25-30 thousand people take their own lives in Japan every year. It’s an astounding figure to me. The various tsunami waves that washed up on the shores of Japan and took live indiscriminately amounted to 13-15 thousand according to the numbers I saw – that’s like two or three tsunami waves coming ashore every year and carrying their victims out to sea.  It’s a terrible statistic to contemplate.

When you see the horrific living situations of the hurricane and earthquake victims in Haiti – and other tragic places… there’s more than enough sorrow to go around.  Should we not every day be thanking the Lord for the blessings HE has blessed us with and doing our part to assist as well as do what we can to help our neighbors. As for the wars that continue in the Mid – East – the death and destruction rained down on people overcome by dictatorships and unmitigated greed --- being able to provide meaningful help and assistance seems almost beyond reach.

I belong to a group called the Gideon’s – they are international in scope and wide reaching in attempting to help people in 193 countries around the world. There are other organizations like Flight Angels… the Salvation Army and many, many others including and hospital workers who ban together to provide help where they can.  I thank the Lord for his abundance in blessing some so they may bless others.  Let us be measuring out how we can help with the same kind of shovel we would hope could be used to help feed us or meet our needs. God is great to give resources to so many to help and the desire to assist to so many others – who perhaps have not yet discovered the joy of sharing your worth and goods – and spreading them out in the lives of others.

God bless you today. Look around. See how you can be of service to your fellow pilgrims.

Cordially, IN HIM

Jack
