LIGHTNING ROUINDS AND "NO SHOWS" -- GREENVILLE SC PEACE CENTER -- for Friday 110506

Once again it’s FRIDAAAAY….

And once again we’re having some trouble on the sending end of our electronic post office…

We’re trying to send you a report on what happened last evening (Friday May 5th ) at the Peace Center in downtown Greenville SC where five GOP candidates answered questions from FOX NEWS staff on that cable network – which constituted the first GOP debate for the presidential nomination of the 2012 election cycle.

The big surprise to me at least – was the polling numbers from the Lenz Polling folks who do the on the air polling for Fox – developed from an audience in Charleston SC who apparently came in to the debate without any definite idea of who their favorite would be – and left with a decision from more than half of the 20 or so members of the ‘jury’ selecting Herm Cain – former CEO of Godfather’s Pizza as their pick.

Here’s the text of my report that normally is separate from the blog text:

Just a Minute: Greenville SC’s Peace Center had Fox News correspondents questioning five GOP presidential candidates for about two hours last night on national TV.

Fox hires instant replay pollsters who found the majority of the polled audience – distanced in Charleston -- preferred Herman Cain, formerly CEO of Godfather’s Pizza as their favourite. The other candidates in the Thursday night event were: former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, 12 term Texas Rep. Ron Paul, and former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson.

Bret Baer, moderated the evening and the panel of questioners -- all from Fox News -- included Chris Wallace, Shannon Bream and Juan Williams.  The Tea Party ran its own gathering which began before the broadcast and continued into the evening.  AP and Reuters were allowed only one still photographer each during the debate so refused to cover it.

Nothing earth-shaking occurred -- both Pawlenty and Santorum filled their roles --  did not attack other candidates although given the opportunity, and other candidates probably erred being “no shows” at the season’s first debate.

So that was the surprise for us all… Of course one debate, especially this far ahead of the election doesn’t tell all the story.  But it’s very interesting.

We’re also finding out the demise of Osama Bin Laden doesn’t – apparently – change a lot of minds, at least so far, about who is favored to win whatever contest ensues. Quinnipiac – a polling outfit that has done some very accurate work heretofore finds Mr. Obama got something amounting to a 2-3 point ‘bump’ from the events of this past week… which is taken to mean the majority of the electorate is *still* unexcited about returning Mr. O to a second term.

Obviously that’s something to be decided over the next year – and it’s looking out pretty far ahead. But the general feeling is as it happened to George H.W. Bush some years back when a newcomer named Bill Clinton ran against him as a sitting president… Bush was defeated and Mr. Clinton went on to win the Presidency twice!

Well… one robin doesn’t make a Spring. So perhaps it will be a very interesting year.

So… like Porky Pig of the old cartoon days… “Th,,th…tha…that’s All folks!”

Have a great weekend – see you on Monday!

Cordially, IN HIM

Jack
