Howdy on a Monday Friends…

It’s a movin’ on towards winter… the Winter solstice will be here soon… 21^st at 7:04 AM. That means the sun (from our observation point) reaches its furtherest north ‘movement’ and starts back south – but actually it just means the days and nights stay about the same for a week or so and then gradually the days become longer… as we work our way through January.

For years I’ve proposed skipping January… seemingly the darkest.. but certainly the coldest month of the year in most places in the northern hemisphere. The summer warmth just lingers… Anyway… it always was a blessing to me when commuting to work in the DC area for several years that just before Christmas we could count on the fact that Spring was on the way – although it’s hard to tell it. [g]

When I did some consulting work in Arizona a few years back… I was intrigued with the behavior of the ‘snowbirds’ that live out that way to get away from the Michigan winters… (or other points of mega snowfalls)… and how they enjoyed NOT shoveling snow in the winter. But of course a lot of these folks were retired… they didn’t have much else to do I guess…I observed one gang of 70-80 somethings that were on the same golf links *regularly* -- as regularly as going to work at the office. And playing the same course day after day. Does that sound boring to you? About like going to work at an office you didn’t want to go because the work was… well… dull. Fortunately I never got into that rut. I hope you’ve avoided it too. What counts is how you relate to what your creator wants you to do… You do know HE has a plan for your life don’t you?

Well… as we get older – we get wiser – (I think) otherwise we keep making the same mistakes… and that’s a waste of time… There are so many new ones out there we can learn from. J

JUST A MINUTE – Four-star Army Chief of Staff General Eric Shinseki, warned his nemesis, Defense Chief Don Rumsfeld, the Army would need hundreds of thousands more soldiers in Iraq. The twice purple heart decorated soldier – seriously wounded during the Viet Nam war -- was shortly “retired” from his Army Chief of Staff post.

Now he’s in line to be the first Asian-American to head up the VA – second largest government agency – apparently partly because far-left Democrats are dissatisfied with Obama’s “moderate” Cabinet picks. So the President-Elect named a critic of the Iraq war to head the VA and announced it on TV’s “Meet the Press.” Obama’s appointment of the Japanese-American came on the 67^th Anniversary of the December 7^th 1941 Japanese sneak attack on Pearl Harbor in which the Pacific Fleet was nearly destroyed and thousands of American service personnel died.

Democrat Sen. Daniel Akaka, of Hawaii and chairman of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, praises Shinseki as a "great choice." Of Obama’s eight Cabinet picks so far only two are white males – Geithner, at Treasury, and Gates at Defense.
