CLEANIN' HOUSE DOWN SOUTH - Just a Minute for Tuesday 12-09-08

Hello Again…

Here we are helpin’ to clean up the mess left by Katrina nearly three years after – and Congressman William Jefferson – who poorly represents Louisiana’s 3rd Congressional District is just now getting around to answering the charges developed by the FBI of how does $90,000 in cold cash – money marked by an FBI sting operation allegedly from a bribery payoff get stashed in Mr. Jefferson’s home freezer? It should be an interesting “mellow drama” as I saw a similar criminal case described in the Greenville News lately.

“Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive.” Mr. Jefferson – Meet Sir Walter Scott – Scotland’s famous poet. He could teach us all something valuable!

But it’s an ill wind… (that blows the door shut?) – No… that opens the door to the first Vietnamese-American who walks through to take the (dis)Honorable Mr. Jefferson’s seat…at least for a while. Hurricane Gustav delayed voting in N.O.’s #3 Congressional district – about 21% of the white voters turned out and only about 12% of the non-whites…Which was enough to give Mr. Anh “Joseph” Cao (pronounced gow) the nod to occupy Mr. Jefferson’s seat for the next two years. Given the gerrymandering of that district by the Louisiana delegation… it’s doubtful that Mr. Cao will get a majority next time around… but with the eyes of the nation focused now upon New Orleans’ shenanigans… perhaps there will be a different result. We can all hope (and pray) can we not.

There will be more heard from the Honorable Mr. Cao in the future I’m sure. I’m hoping Mr. Jefferson will get every bit of justice coming to him whatever that may mean. Americans can take a lesson from Mr. Cao who has suffered being uprooted from his homeland to make a significant career in America by diligence and effort – not by handouts. So… Congratulations to the new Louisiana Congressman from the Third District.

Cordially, IN HIM

“JUST A MINUTE”

CLEANIN’ HOUSE DOWN SOUTH

JUST A MINUTE – Hurricane Gustav blew away Congressman William Jefferson according to the New Orleans Times-Picaynue front page – it said: "An untested Republican opponent … [defeated William Jefferson a] nine-term Democrat.”

What’s even more unusual – according to the Times-Picayune “is, the winner, Anh ‘Joseph’ Cao,(pronounce Gow) becomes the first Vietnamese-American in Congress – which adds to Louisiana’s reputation for ethnic political pioneers. Last year the Pelican State elected the nation's first Indian-American governor, Bobby Jindal.”

Congressman Jefferson plead not guilty to charges of bribery and corruption, but was indicted… “following revelations in 2005 that FBI agents found $90,000 in marked bills in his freezer--literally, cold cash.” The paper says he will likely go on trial next year.

It’s been a bad year for Republicans nationwide, but in Louisiana they now hold six out of seven House seats. Unfortunately for Cao, the demographics of his district make it difficult for him to hold on to the seat, but with the Governor’s help and Jefferson’s trial going on the first Vietnamese Congressman may be able to hang on.
