A CASE OF SELF DEFENSE - Tuesday 06-17-08

Hello again…

Busy week ahead? We have one. It’s my wife Barbara’s 60th HS graduation class reunion. Yes… the New York Times may not take note of it… but we hope the Easton Express covering all the news that’s fit to print in Easton PA… along with that in Wilson Borough, Palmer Township and all the little dells in the Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton area. I’m hoping we can make it through the crush of wheel chairs and walkers – just kidding. Barbara had a class in 1948 of about 150. My high school graduating class a year later was 20 in south central Virginia – before they started consolidating rural high schools.  We didn’t have enough guys to make up a football team – much less one that could actually win. But enough of that.

This seems to be the season when we were often on the road as a young family. School is out… we liked to go camping and in the early years had to make do with the camping equipment that was much more like home-made… and not the lightweight things you can easily carry from your local Wal-Mart. It was a lovely time with lots of memories – mostly good!  The kids got to spend time with Grandma and Grandpa… which they loved… I’m not so sure about Grandma and Grandpa.

In any case I’m running some back numbers of JUST A MINUTE this week to make it a bit easier to get away. I hope you’ll like what you hear. Perhaps it’ll be a welcome break from most of the bleaks or battered news.

Cordially, IN HIM

Jack

PS – Oh yes… I’d forgotten. I can’t seem to get rid of the gremlins that mess up my audio links – so we’re going back to the old way of posting them here… but we’ll hold on to posting the script also.

“JUST A MINUTE”

A CASE OF SELF DEFENSE

Just A Minute – Here’s a story we ran almost two years ago.

George Dickert - 44 - was at home in Greenville, South Carolina on a July Sunday evening about eleven -- his wife was rocking their three year old. Suddenly thugs waving a gun using vile language, broke into his home bent on robbery. George resisted. His 13 year old son – went to a bedroom, retrieved a gun, and returned with the hammer cocked. His Dad was swinging at four assailants.

“I’ll shoot!” said the son. They fled.  The senior Dickert sent four shots after them to make sure they got the message.

Shortly, Greenville police found young men between 16 and 20 breathing heavily.

George said he’d been instructing his son about guns since he was six, “To take away his curiosity,” Dickert added.

Some national media have reported communities where laws have been strengthened and homeowners prepare to defend themselves, there’s a significant decrease in crime.

Maybe it’s not for everyone – but the robbers don’t know who’s prepared and who isn’t. Besides making sense, it seems to level the playing field.

SORRY, I DIDN'T GET THE NAME? -- Just A Minute for 06-16-08

Hello Again… It’s Monday and a whole week ahead of us. Use it well.

In the game of billiards they call it a three cushion shot – aiming at one target in order, really, to hit another. In politics it’s called “The spoiler.” Probably the most recent one to carry that title in the Presidential campaign is either Ross Perot or Ralph Nader. One got us Bill Clinton. In any case Ron Paul, Bob Barr, possibly some I’ve not recognized are currently in the running. Strom Thurmond’s 1948 campaign he maintained till the end was not as a spoiler but as a candidate. He often told anyone who would listen a shift of a few thousand votes would have sent the vote into the House of Representatives where the result could have been quite different.

Ah well… the “what might have been’s” of history are most famously recorded in the Poem “Maud Muller” – but not in the history books. We are seldom confident of entirely ruling them out but third parties in American politics are rather notoriously famous for failure. Anyway it’s an interesting conversation if anyone know much about it. Trouble is – most of us don’t and usually show it. But that’s part of living in a free country – and participatory politics.

Thanks for dropping by.

Cordially, IN HIM

Jack

“JUST A MINUTE”

I DIDN’T GET THE NAME?

Just a Minute – Recognize these -- Teddy Roosevelt, John Anderson, Ross Perot, Ralph Nader? They’re all third party candidates in the 20th Century. They didn’t win – and other people lost.

More often than not they were working the same game I did in Wasena Elementary’s third grade. The male party was outnumbered by the girl party until I got the bright idea to nominate a second girl to run. The guys were angry with me -- nominating a girl! Then – they got itwe won.

Republican Norm Coleman, winding up his first Senate term in Minnesota, was totally worried about comedian Al Franken’s candidacy until the news of Franken’s back tax bills surfaced – now Coleman is beginning to breathe easier. He finds there’s more than one kind of spoiler.

The folks in Bob Barr’s home state of Georgia aren’t really planning to attend their former Congressman’s inauguration in January – but they may get some consolation tickets to the Obama swearing in if Barr’s Libertarian campaign manages to siphon off enough McCain votes.

It’s a tough world out there – full of unintended consequences.

"JOHNNIE WE HARDLY KNEW YE" - Just a Minute for Friday 6/13/08

Howdy—

It’s been a hot week in ‘Lake Wobegone’ – but the A/C has performed well. However even the squirrels seem to be panting as they come down to grab the sunflower seeds intended for the birds. We’ve seen two red-headed woodpeckers at the same time on the feeder. But so far this year… no hummingbirds. We even bought a new feeder to attract them… but so far not a one. Anyone have any ideas why not?

Perhaps it’s the sad song Obama’s singing. Second verse… same as the first. This week he threw over the side Jim Johnson who has been favored by the Democrats and was part of the VP search team until it turned out he had a sweetheart deal from Countrywide – biggest of the sub-prime lenders who Barak himself had singled out as being part of the reason for the housing melt down. Now it turns out he’s described as someone only “tangentially related” to the campaign… sort of like Father Pfleger… or Jeremiah Wright who “Is not the same man who married us or baptized our children” and where Obama no longer attends church.

Others in that long and wearying line of “Hardly Known’s” are terrorist bomber William Ayers… Tony Rezko – land baron in the Chicago area and Eric Holder appointed to vet the vettors – or something like that who – under the Clinton Administration’s Justice Department played his part in getting a last minute pardon for Marc Rich.

Well… where the bodies are buried there the BIG BIRDIES gather together. In another ten weeks or so the Conventions will be here and we’ll toddle down the home stretch… Can’t come too soon for me.

Cordially, IN HIM

Jack

“JUST A MINUTE”

SINGING SAD WORDS

Just A Minute – An old Irish ballad from the Civil War era -- “Johnnie We Hardly Knew Ye…” wafts across The Potomac these days. The refrain lingers along the campaign trail and grows stronger day by day.

The lyric began with Reverend Jeremiah Wright, a “friend and mentor” for 20 plus years, but now beyond the pale. Most recently added is former Fannie Mae CEO, Jim Jordan, – charged with vetting the V.P. vettors – but suddenly tossed over the side when his cozy relationship with Countrywide – biggest sub-prime lender and former Obama target -- was revealed. Now described as “only tangentially related” to the Obama campaign.

What about Father Michael Pfleger, and former terrorist bomber William Ayers? Is there a prevailing pattern of bad judgment here? And Eric Holder, also among Mr. Obama's veep vetters. Under Bill Clinton’s Justice Department, he played a role in the Marc Rich pardon.

Oh yes, these are people, Obama wants to remind us he, ‘hardly knew.’

DON'T START A WAR OVER IT! Just a Minute for O6-11-08

Howdy Folks…

Well – now we’ve cleared the local primary races… I’m not just sure how the runoff’s will run… we’ll hear more about that soon… then we go into a political brown out (I hope) until after the Conventions. But I’m afraid there’s no rest for the weary.  The guys and gals making a living by political predictions… pundits they’re called in the common parlance… need to keep the pipeline full.  Although there are signs of change there.

The Washington Post for example has offered early retirement to about 100 occupants of it’s half acre news room. And other papers are following suite. Some folks are taking up blogging posts… others are quitting the game at least for the present or until things shake out. The New York Times  is going through the same shake up and the mood has changed somewhat although not as publically at the Wall Street Journal. It’s never been more difficult to assess just where the news business is going to come down.

WMUU was one of the first stations to have five minutes of news on the hour.  People said where will you find enough news about weather to do a five minute newscast? Now… The Weather Channel does that 24/7 all night all day all the time. And beyond that you can pick up weather and traffic cams streaming what I see as rather boring information – too much of it. Sort of like watching paint dry.  But… they are all feeling their way along.

We’ll stick with our one minute JUST A MINUTE’s … and hang on tight. I’ve really never seen the news and information scene so crowded and jumbled. But that’s what’s happening folks.

All the best…. IN HIM

Jack

LOOKING FOR WORK? Just a Minute for Tuesday 06-10-08

Howdy Folks...

We’re often quick to blame something or somebody for an error or wrong they had little to do with. It’s that way with minimum wage legislation.

It’s easy to recall radio commentators excoriating the jump in minimum wage from 45 cents to 65 cents an hour – (and there were some before that … from 25 cents to 35 cents.) One wag said: If that’s all it takes – passing a law, let’s make everyone’s minimum wage $50 an hour.

Now nobody wants to be ‘hard hearted’ and begrudge a hamburger flipper extra money in his take home pay – but the problem is when wages are raised artificially – that is by fiat… the Congress merely saying what *will* be paid, the first to get hurt are generally the people who most need the help.

In cutting and pasting a chart for a client back in the sixties, on compensation. It was very easy to tell when new minimum wage legislation passed the Congress. At first wage rates of were quite comparable – but as higher and higher wages were dictated the gap between white and black youths widened. It really wasn’t the differences in their abilities – it came down to what employers were willing to pay – and that related to how much money each group could bring in. When white youths were valued as car hops or store clerks their wages went up and vice versa.

It’s an irrefutable economic law that the workers valued the least in terms of what they can earn get the lowest wages and are usually the first to be let go – and the last to be hired.

The Minimum Wage is generally ineffective in setting wages -- it also discriminates between males and females in most jobs.

Far too often those seeking to help, end up hurting the ones they want to help by ignoring and being heavy handed in their efforts. We’ve got a long way to go.

Cordially, IN HIM

Jack

“JUST A MINUTE”

LOOKING FOR WORK?

Just A MinuteTurns out it wasn’t the greedy oil companies or history’s most over-hyped recession that caused unemployment to jump by point five percent in a month… It’s six hundred thousand students suddenly looking for work -- students in April became unemployed in May. How did it happen?

Look under the Capitol dome. Last year dim-bulb Democrats and rocky-brained Republicans passed the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2007 – beginning a phased-in increase in minimum wages from $5.15 to $7.25. It isn’t rocket science to figure out there’ll be an unemployment spike among those lowest on the wage scale.

So pizza parlors, municipal pool employees, apprenticed house painters are shut out because businesses encounter big cost increases which they can’t afford – so -- voila! Unemployment -- the logical result of government set labor prices. That hits the most economically vulnerable every time. Surprised? Sorry … King Canute couldn’t command the tide to hold back either.

GOING MY WAY? Just a Minute for Monday 6/9/08

Hello again –

With all the campaign ads and finger pointing on the national and local political scene it’s enough to make us question the sanity of going through this every few years. As a matter of fact the folks in the current Congress were hardly sworn in back in 2007 before the campaign for November of 2008 started… It’s been a long time since the snows of Iowa – and we could wish for a few cooler heads.

I’m ready for a U.K. style law that restricts campaigning to four weeks before election. If we’d vote on that *right now* I think it’d win.

But we need to remind ourselves lots of sacrifices have been made so we can go to the polls tomorrow and do some primary voting. Don’t forgo it. Then there’s the BIG one coming up in November. And there’s a lot of water, and froth and driftwood yet to go under the bridge before we get there. Still that’s one of the ‘pleasures’ of living in a free country – and as it’s often said freedom isn’t free… or more accurately “eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.” Let’s not let our abundance of riches grow old and stale. Be vigilant.

Cordially, IN HIM

Jack

“JUST A MINUTE”

GOING MY WAY?

Just A Minute – Senator Chuck Schumer gripes about President Bush going off to the Middle East while gas prices float around four bucks and more. But here are some crazy things. Seventy-one of the 97 senators who voted to stop filling the Strategic Oil Reserve also opposed drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. That doesn’t make sense.

Neither does the fact 38 Democrats, including Barack Obama, and 33 Republicans, including John McCain -- voted to keep ANWR's estimated 10.4 billion barrels of oil off the market which means Schumer and McCain and cohorts pluck about $10 bucks out of the pockets of everyone buying 20 gallons of gas.

George Will, quoting H.L. Mencken says “Democracy is the theory the common people know what they want and deserve to get it good and hard.”  New Yorkers want Schumer to be their senator so they should pipe down about gasoline prices.  They and we made a predictable choice. Quit griping.

Beaten by #2 ??? - Just a Minute for 06-06-08 Friday

Howdy folks… it’s FRIDAY – and the week seemed interminable. But Friday finally got here with a late Spring – early Summer heat wave.  Tornadoes in the mid-west.

Tornadoes too on the political front and more to come I fear.

Tomorrow (Saturday 06-07-08) is *supposed* to mark the suspension of Mrs. Clinton’s campaign for the Presidency… but we don’t get to the Democrat convention until late August… so… much ado ‘till then.  And within a few days there will be more rumbling and grumbling ‘she’s not abiding by the rules just like she didn’t when it came to not campaigning in Florida etc. etc.

The pattern you will be seeing is largely attributable to the major media having to do *something* to keep people looking in on the political front while we wait for the clock to tick on toward Labor Day when campaigning is getting ready to crank up for the main event. Most of this struggle is likely to be behind the ‘arras’. [That’s left over from my HS study of Hamlet…which did me little good I fear.] The correspondents are drug out from spending 16 months on the road following the candidates around from the snows of Iowa until now. The general public will shortly discover – mostly for themselves – is that one cannot win a national campaign strictly along black v. white lines.  But what will be done with all these news salaries and overhead if we don’t put out a news product…. Well… we could all go to the beach or mountains. It would be far more relaxing and reconstructive I think.

However the real world isn’t that orderly – and we will be left with Bob Novak’s minions looking through keyholes and Chris Matthews rehashing endlessly his Democrat party bias along with others – trying to breathe some life into this campaign that has reached a pause. Meanwhile I hope someone is talking John McCain into either taking elocution lessons or sticking with the Town Hall type forum where he can stay even or at least come close to matching Obama. Perhaps the rest of us can take up Fishing or baseball until the footballers begin to bash each other in the Fall.

Anyway… have a good weekend – join us next week.

Cordially, IN HIM

Jack

“JUST A MINUTE”

BEATEN BY #2?

Just A Minute – Mrs. Clinton says she will ‘suspend’ her campaign tomorrow. I say don’t believe it.

The Clinton’s never give up -- and the Democrat pros are just beginning to filter out the word winning the black and Hispanic vote just ain’t goin’ to cut it.

Check South Carolina – Just winning along racial lines won’t provide Democrats a victory. A recent black writer the Greenville News by fellow living in Switzerland did the math and in order for Senator Obama to win either the Republicans have to blow it, or the Democrats must bring in help to win working white voters if you’re playing the color game.

Mrs. Clinton knows this, that’s why she’s ‘suspending’ operations but not quitting. Some kind of accommodation has to be reached, probably behind the scenes in the coming weeks.

David Broder, senior writer at the Washington Post says the same thing just in different words. Most of the media remain interested in ‘keeping the fight going’ in order to keep readers and viewership high for advertising revenues.  The political pros have different goals.

IN BEIJING WATCH WHERE YOU SLEEP -- Just A Minute for 6-05-08 THURSDAY

Hi Folks –

With so much politics going on at home it’s hard to keep track that the rest of the world is still turning and must be attended to.

For instance the Olympics come up shortly in China, The Chinese have helpfully put out a Q&A book – in Chinese of course – reminding visitors of certain rules to be obeyed. They are enumerated in today’s program so you can hear them there.

But there are several reminders to tell you China is NOT the U.S. and you’d better pay attention. For instance:

1. Carry your passport and official papers at all times.

2. Register with the police within 24 hours if you are staying with family or friends…

And it goes on. -- One caught my eye… it’s forbidden to sleep in airports, train stations or parks. So if your plane arrives late… don’t stretch out while waiting for the taxi.

In America we often take our gracious and small freedoms for granted – until – if we’re not vigilant, we wake up to find them gone.

So if you’re going to Beijing for the Olympics… check with the local police before you nod off after a bowl of noodles in the park .

Cordially, IN HIM

Jack

“JUST A MINUTE”

WATCH WHERE YOU SLEEP IN BEIJING

Just A Minute – If you’re planning to go to China for the Olympics, you should know – the Chinese have put out a Q&A manual (in Chinese of course) about rules visitors are expected to follow.

1. Carry your passport and official papers at all times.

2. If staying with friends or relatives you must register with local police within 24 hours.

3. Places of entertainment will be closed between 2AM and 8AM. I it is prohibited to sleep in public places including airports, train stations and parks.

4. At major public venues behavior that “disturbs order” is prohibited.

5. Inside Olympic venues it is illegal to display any “religious, political and ethnic slogans, banners and other items.”

6. Those planning marches or demonstrations must apply to police for permission – then we will tell you where and when you may hold them, if at all.

No one could locate an Olympic organizing person who could or would comment on the rules.

Just don’t plan a nap in the airport, train or bus terminal.

STEP RITE UP AND TAKE YER CHOICE -- Just A Minute for 06-04-08 Wednesday

Howdy Again Folks…

Gathering around the lunch counter at the Bait Shop and Sushi Bar in Playfair on the Carolina line are the political experts of the border land. It costs nothing to play and everybody’s got an opinion… sometimes two or three and often they don’t agree… even with *themselves* but nobody ever said the Scots-Irish backed away from a good lively discussion – even when it involved crossed swords…or cross words.

In any case, there’s plenty of time to chew it all over… and it will be! Harold Ickes in the Hillary camp says it will go on right up until the Credentials Committee meets in Denver just before the Convention.

Those who are NOT full time political junkies would just as soon go on to something else… but no such luck. It’s going to be here through the leaf-falling season I fear. And the script is going be rather shop-worn and dog-eared before the real election gets here.

Meanwhile there are still important and meaningful primary elections on the local and regional level that deserve attention. It’s just the carpet has already become so worn everyone but the die-hards would just as soon go fishin’ or lying out in the hammock in the shade or most anything but hear another Obama, McCain, Clinton go ‘round… we’ve heard it *all* before – at least we think we have. I have to say though the most riveting videos I’ve seen originate in the Chicago vicinity – but even they get tiresome after the 20th loop.

Anyone care for a grass-roots campaign to limit campaigning to 4 weeks before the election as the British do?

Thanks for coming by.

Cordially, IN HIM

WHO'S GONNA STEER? Just a Minute for Tuesday June 3, 2008

Howdy Folks…

Well the primary finish line is *finally* in sight. But there are, I think, some long hot summer days left before the decision about the Democrat Party’s Nominee will be clear. The details of where I think the path may lie are in the script below and in the audio file. But it seems apparent the path ahead, at least for the moment, won’t be smooth. But eventually I think all will be fairly well smoothed over – except for one big bump – and his name is Bill.

The Clintons are simply not of a notion to be denied a prize to which they believe they are entitled. Between them they have their differences – but they are agreed on one thing: The Clinton ‘Dynasty’ has more pages of history to write, and they are determined to do it – one way or another. I think you’ll see a rather abrasive contest that at this stage seems to go right down to the Democratic Convention in Denver. There are going to be bruises, but they will be minimized and covered over while the campaign gets underway. Divisions will remain under the surface but if you want a picture of how the Democrats can come together, just look at how the Johnson and Kennedy families made up in the aftermath of the JFK assassination. It’s probably going to happen folks – but remember, the Lord won’t be surprised at all.

Cordially, IN HIM

Jack

“JUST A MINUTE”

WHO’S GONNA STEER?

Just A Minute – Over the weekend we got a clearer picture of what may happen in the Democrat contest. Miz Hillary apparently can’t win but can threaten what Fox news calls a “scorched earth” policy between now and the Democrat’s late August convention in Denver if she doesn’t get the number two spot on the ticket.

That would solve two problems: 1)Hillary could recoup the eleven million plus she has loaned her own campaign -- from the Obama overflowing treasure chest. And, 2) It would hold the vast number of Democrats who have voted for Madam Clinton from either defecting to McCain or staying home.

The downside also has two parts: 1) Embracing Hillary means you also get Bill, which increasingly looks like adding a loose cannon on the poop-deck: And 2) It gives the disaffected Democrat anti-Clinton voters a reason to stay home and not contribute to the Party.

How would an Obama-Clinton Administration function? Probably no worse than a Kennedy-Johnson one did after 1964.
