THINGS SLOW DOWN - THEN THEY HEAT UP -- Just A Minute Radio for Wednesday 101013

Welcome to the middle of a busy week…

You’d think with Congress out of town – and with Obama on the ‘look my way’ path – having gone to Ohio about as many times as he, or they can stand it; things would sort of settle down to a dull, background roar.  But not according to the news and the Internet and the cable channels and the Chile miner’s rescue and, and , and…

November 2nd can’t come quick enough in my book. But, it’s the political season… and like football, basketball or even baseball (which is by far the slowest, most laid-back sport -- but has its moments) there’s a certain urge that the sports fans have to answer and there’s no staunching the flow of cheering for the “home” team no matter where you are or what you’re doing.

So… we who don’t have polls running in our arterial avenues, nor breathe the air of backroom deals, agreements or feuds, we’re a bit mystified by it all. But you only have to look at the way football (and all the other sports) fans open their wallets to realize how far ‘over the cliff’ they’ve gone… and there’s little hope of rescue.

I admit to being attracted to certain activities, like aviation, or ham radio, or girls (back in high school days) but I, after a while pried loose the grip – at least in *most* cases.  But each person is different… and that coupled with the scriptural knowledge that God deals in HIS own ways with HIS people… and each case (person, family or association) is its own entity.  So… while I have every intention of cleaning up my office where it is more useful… I don’t get to it. The same is true for my tools… my work bench… it seems the list is never ending.

So, when the leaves start dropping and the political winds have blown now for nine months or so in this particular cycle, I guess it’s like the old stories of the fire house horses who never loose their reaction to hearing the firehouse alarm bell ring, signaling the call to duty – at least in our nobler moments we think of it as duty. Certainly politics *should* be thought of as public service. But there are areas in which…. And I’d better leave off the rest of the catalog… or it would go on forever.

In any case… for the Christian – it’s a time for study and meditation… which is often lost in the excitement of campaign. And we’ll only keep our eye on the prize of the upward call in Christ Jesus, if we engaged in a determined manner, and faithfully execute

the course which requires discipline… and dedication and renewal of a close walk with the Holy Spirit.  All of that is mostly foreign language in political circles; seldom thought of and even more seldom followed. I’m afraid I speak from experience.

Lord Acton’s pronouncement is not scripture – but it is nonetheless true: “Power corrupts – and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”  I don’t know of a single person involved in public service, who if he/she is honest would not look over the life that is passing and affirm the accuracy of Lord Action’s observation.

Perhaps it will recur on your radar screen as it does mine… and sometime we can have a mature discussion of the inevitability of it’s effects.

            Cordially, IN HIM

SEEMS LIKE EVERYTHING'S SPINNING OUT OF CONTROL - Just A Minute Radio for Tuesday 101012

The old sun ball seems a bit sleepy climbing out of bed right about 7:30AM local time ---

But the frantic rate at which the candidates are chasing over the map – and the President is playing golf as if there would certainly be a shortage of balls next season. It just seems the Nation has run out of patience and we are stumbling over ourselves to get to November Second.

Well… bring it on… We’re ready to have something GOOD happen. Today is a special election day in South Carolina where among electing people we’re also voting on changing the State Constitution. When you’re voting you’ll want to pay particular attention to those questions… and it would be a good idea to go over the text of the four things being considered.  One that’s fairly easy to understand is what’s called the Card Check… a matter concerning organizing unions in South Carolina… that’s been around a long time.

We don’t have the room to go through all the questions right here… but you’ll want to arm yourself ahead of time. Take your time and exercise your right to vote!

Well… lots to be done… we’ll be checking in with the folks at Playfair tomorrow… be sure and be here for that Miz Pearl, Homer and our old friend Billy-Bob… you’ll want to be around every week day for JUST A MINUTE.

“JUST A MINUTE”

SEEMS LIKE EVERYING’S SPINNING OUT OF CONTROL

Just a Minute: -- We’re out of sorts right now trying to make sense out of current happenings. For instance the President has spent time doing 36 fundraisers and played 56 rounds of golf – according to people who keep count of these things –yet seems ever more angry with every speech he makes.

By the way, in one story we checked out in current newspapers who rate the most powerful women in Washington – we find Mrs. Obama has leap-frogged the competition – even “her pal” Oprah – and now stands at the head of the line… One of the noted differences between Michelle and Barack is SHE doesn’t use a teleprompter.

Trying to score this Administration is difficult…. There’s not a sign of a budget – not a single appropriations bill (providing the money to run the departments) has been passed. And economists say billions of investment dollars are sidelined because of the overarching uncertainty due to Congress leaving town without anyone being able to say what the tax rates will be next year.

Everything seems to be spinning out of control.

WHAT'S THE BIG HURRY TO GET OUT OF TOWN? - Just A Minute Radio - Monday 101011

Here we are at the beginning of a week – headed down the slide straight to the end of this electoral cycle – 23 days to go it seems like we’ve been on this street for a long time… but there are 23 more sunrises to go through. So – let’s get started.

The White House last Friday – while the Prez was out of town stirring up the troops – announced that he would be leaving Washington on November 4th for a four country tour in Asia. Turns out the schedule was moved up two days – according to news sources in India – to get the President into Mumbai so he could take part in honoring those who died about a year ago in a terrorist attack then.

John Fund – who is editor of Opinion Journal -- the Dow Jones electronic effort aside from its newspaper – said it took the Washington press corps by surprise. And generally it was being put down as a ‘get out of town’ maneuver to avoid the  embarrassment of having to take phone calls from defeated Democrats asking: “What happened?”  The speculation is there will be a clamor for statements and interviews from the President, the Vice President and campaign consultants as well as those who have been calling the shots from the White House during this mid-term.

From all the polling --  more of it this year than ever before – it appears the usual mid-term election losses the winning candiate’s party takes as the first election cycle after a major victory takes place may increase by exponential factors. Some predict  as many as 100 House Seats could change hands – which happened in President Coolidge’s election. Plus there are significant bets that even the Senate could change hands as it did in 1994.

Therefore it would seem since the size of the tidal-wave of change that *could* come ashore this fall -- it isn’t the wisest choice to make that looks like he’s “hiding out” overseas as the chickens come home.  This President does not easily suffer major changes in “his” vision of how things *ought* to happen.  Going out of the country for ten days in the wake of a major, or even a strong upset, doesn’t impress me as a stroke of genius.

In fact, given the current dent’s in the President’s current suit of armor and looking at a difficult ‘lame-duck’ session just ahead loaded with in the way of ‘emergency’ or ‘disaster avoiding’ legislation that *should* be of concern – it would seem the President’s whiz kids are thinking they can “thumb their nose” toward public opinion. Not a healthy sign.

Well, there are still a lot of ‘tales to be told’ between now and Nov. 2nd – let’s get buckled in.

“JUST A MINUTE”

WHAT’S THE BIG HURRY TO GET OUT OF TOWN?

Just a Minute: -- Friday the White House released an announcement the President will leave Washington two days early on an Asian tour November 4th --  Which will be right after voters have rendered a decision, a reaction to his first two years in office.  He will return November 14th.

News sources in India say the President originally planned to leave Washington two days later but the trip was moved up so he can be in Mumbai to pay homage to those who died in last year’s terrorist attack.

John Fund, lead writer for the Dow Jones Opinion Journal, wrote: “The American people will have rendered a key judgment on his presidency in America’s mid-term elections.”  Fund speculated on the reason given by the White House: “No doubt that's true, but it will also mean the president will be outside the country and all the more able to avoid painful phone conversations with defeated Democrats or answer questions about his role in the party's losses and the prospects for his post-election agenda in what's likely to be a more Republican Congress.”

REP. SPRATT IN A 5TH DISTRICT HOT TUB -- Just A Minute Radio -- BLogspot -- 101008

Welcome to the discussion on a Friday…. (I think I said that in error yesterday…0h well…)

There’s a big BLOG named POLITICO which did a story this week about the trouble Rep. John Spratt of the SC 5th Congressional District is in *because* it has been noted in that BLOG John Spratt has voted with Madam Nancy Pelosi – otherwise known as the Queen of San Francisco… Oh yes and Speaker of the House of Representatives – The first female to attain that privilege. Anyway Mr. Spratt has been so loyal as to vote something like 98% of the time with Mrs. Pelosi.

POLITICO sent a correspondent over to the 5th Congressional in SC… to see for himself/herself.  And indeed they did find that although Mr. Spratt has been voted into office 14 times, he may be in trouble this time because of the Tidal Wave effect – of which nobody knows *just* what IS going to happen… but they’re all worried. They all look back at 1994 and wonder will it be bad or worse.

From the write up given on POLITICO – although sympathetic – it appears he, like others possibly stands on the brink.

It looks to me somewhat like what happens when a pitcher in the big leagues is on the verge of pitching a no-hit game.  Nobody is willing to even mention it lest it jinx the progress of things.  Mr. Spratt is at present chairman of the Budget Committee in the House I believe. Obviously he takes his orders from “Madam Speaker.”  But equally obviously … she’s possibly riding for a fall too!

So everybody is walking around trying not to step on the eggshells. Even Barney Frank seems to be worried. Nobody actually knows how high this Tidal Sweep will go… you could be way under or over on your estimate… either one makes you look like you’re not in the “KNOW”!

Anyway… it’s late – and I have nothing of substance to contribute… except I will think on it over the weekend.  Why don’t you do the same and drop me a line at n4zhk@arrl.net... And that way it will get to me and not be hijacked by  Gremlins or kremlins along the way. (J)

            See you Monday… Lord willing!

“JUST A MINUTE”

REP. SPRATT IN A 5TH DISTRICT PELOSI HOT TUB

Just a Minute: -- John Spratt, has been South Carolina’s 5th District Democrat since 1982 despite Republican efforts to unseat him. It’s a largely rural area including Gaffney, Darlington and the Peachoid.

But the popular blog named Politico assesses his contest this year as the most difficult so far, and apparently Mr. Spratt agrees. In a tour of the District a former Democratic State Senator Jim Lander, laid part of the problem at the feet of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi whose ‘attack ads’, he says, have made the race “loud and negative.”  But Lander believes Spratt will survive because 5th District voters have split the ticket 14 times.

But in Newberry, a Republican who talked briefly with Spratt, was a truck driver – construction worker, working two jobs, who listened politely to Spratt’s explanation of stimulus dollars trickling down. But after Spratt had moved said while he’s a Republican who’s previously voted for Spratt, this will be the first time he’s voted against him this  November remarked: “He seems to have changed,” he said … “Plus, I can’t stand Obama or that [blankety-blank] Pelosi.”

UNREPENTANT TERRORIST GETS LIFE SENTENCE -- Just a Minute Radio for Thursday 101007

Hello again it’s Thursday… the NEW MOON appears this evening… if it’s clear enough to see.

And all the dust that’s being stirred up in the political world is getting everybody dizzy.  Tuesday we had the big scene in New York courtroom with the Times Square bomber making all the headlines… He had a 10-15 minute rant in front of the Judge – who cut him off somewhat… but still sentenced him to SIX consecutive life terms without parole. That demonstrates I suppose what happens when we discard the penalties the Lord has provided for taking another person’s life.

There have been some pretty horrific things… TV Spots come from Britain… a “loving mother” saying it’s not only right but dutiful and loving to smother a baby in pain… another picture of an elementary teacher *blowing to smithereens* two students who did not agree with her conclusions about global warming…  They retreated from that one originally saying it was a joke… what a horrible joke… then… well… it’s a tangled skein unworthy of being repeated.

In any case I’m seeing us approaching a sea-change time in this old world.  I’m not a prophet or a son of a prophet…. But the Lord does say things will get worse toward the end… and they are – speaking from a humane and humanity standpoint definitely getting worse.  That’s the BAD news… the GOOD NEWS is we don’t have to go there. We can commit ourselves to the Lord and HIS care.

Even the agnostics and atheists at least in the western world and I think in most of the world possibly – have the idea behind the 23rd Psalm … I’m sure the service men and women do.  We’ve given away thousands of New Testaments and Psalms that have the good news and how to find it in the Bible for yourself…

I get a bit put out with people who are so quick to pick up the term ‘Bible Thumpers’ – it has an attraction for them. I’ve even heard politicos say Job is their favorite New Testament book to prove how much they know about the Bible. (J) – Well they prove it all right… little do they know how well

But we must still be compassionate… for *they* are not the enemy… it’s the one who is the great deceiver who is the enemy of all, all mankind… and there’s no way to keep from stumbling over the great cornerstone… the one who says “Come unto me all you who are weak and burdened down… and I will give you rest….”  It’s there folks… we just need to winsomely share it with those in need.  Think about those in need of the good news when you tend to get exasperated.  The Lord will help you – I know HE does me.

Got to close now. Pick up your Bible … ask the Lord to direct your reading … HE will!

            Cordially, IN HIM

“JUST A MINUTE”

UNREPENTANT TERRORIST GETS LIFE SENTENCE

Just a Minute: -- In a New York Federal court room Tuesday, Faisal Shazhad, plead guilty to ten counts of terror leading to six consecutive life sentences without parole.  He’s a naturalized Pakistani-American. The FBI says he built a mobile weapon of mass destruction. The 31 year old intended his bomb would kill large numbers in Times Square, and even planned a second attack.

His plot failed because Shahzad lacked bomb-making experience. His incendiary device fizzled. But it was packed with nails slated to kill or maim as many New Yorkers as possible. He was calm and seemed eager to plead guilty.

Asked had he not pledged allegiance to the United States, he told the Judge yes, but he didn’t mean it. The plot failed on a busy Saturday night last May when Times Square street vendors saw smoke coming from an SUV.

Faisal expressed his fervent desire for other Muslims to rise up and commit violence against Americans: (quote) "Brace yourselves, because the war with Muslims has just begun,” he said.

IT'S THAT OLD PREDICTIN' BUSINESS AGAIN -- For Just a MINUTE Radio 10106

Once more we’re at the middle of the week… and I’m getting this on the web rather late in the evening. (Or actually – morning.)

My brain seems to want to slow down and almost turn off when I un-diligently allow myself to work this late. It’s just a matter of time management – I tell myself… but still I lack the self-discipline to ignore the various mail pieces and messages I’ll have to handle tomorrow… and get on with it.

Today’s program deals with the ‘bombshell’ the Gallop organization dropped yesterday. I’m not a *great* fan of polls – although with so many different ones floating around now there does seem to be a greater semblance of accuracy.  HOWEVER… Voting and polling are NOT the same thing. And it’s important to keep that tattooed on the underside of your eyelids when we get this close to an election.

The various camps – whose interests are NOT the same as the politicians whose progress the pollsters are trying to track. A great deal of difference results when the questions are worded differently; when the time of day or night they are asked varies; when the order of the questions is jiggled; and even what *else* is going on in the news cycle that day varies – and at this crucial time, it surely does!

I’m not a professional pollster… and in fact I think I’ve been lured into mistaken ideas more often than not by possibly well meaning guys and girls professing to do their job of measuring public sentiment only – and not trying to trip me (or you) up --  but trying to help their candidate win.  A poll showing a BIG jump is news that tends to be self-fulfilling. But often the balloon pops.  The bubble that started to take on a life of its own is punctured by events, or too much other news crowding it out, or even weather – and like the guy in the ‘GOLD’ commercial has said about a million times this year “and the timing may never have been better.”

There is, in this, part magic – part guesswork – part science and statistics game an admixture that is very hard to figure out or sift out the truth or something. I sometimes think polls do more to confuse us than they do to help us understand.  All that to say, it’s rather like picking a winning game before the kickoff or the jump ball or the first pitch … whatever.  Crystal balls are most often cloudy or deceiving, so do like the rest of us do and just take it as it comes – well maybe you can do like you did in elementary school – cross your fingers behind your back. (J)

DOES THIS REALLY MAKE SENSE? FOR Just a Minute Radio - Tues 101005

Welcome again to the environs of cranking out observations on this long-anticipated opportunity to express opinion at the voting station.

The little electronic machines that seem so flimsy and are so heavy must be treated with care and nowadays have to produce a paper trail that really *is* a mile long… and from time to time does not want to cooperate are nonetheless the tools of the process. May I urge you to take full advantage of it.

My wife – who has greater patience – and I have become a team of poll workers. Heretofore in the Commonwealth of Virginia and then the states of NC, and SC she has resolutely gotten up early – and of course I gave her moral support, but little else. And we would get through the voting season in pretty good shape.  When we lived in the National Capital area for about ten years in the 60’s and 70’s we were at the center of the voting universe. And that’s where she learned the ‘trade’ (which it isn’t… it’s a responsibility).

Now we are off in the hinterlands of “flyover country” as the entertainment industry considers the land taking up space between New York and Los Angeles (with occasional excursions to Hawaii, Florida or some place overseas.)  And while Barb is more of a morning person than I am – [my little grey cells don’t begin to produce worthy output until sometime after 4PM… and often later… which means we work on different diurnal (it took me an *awfully* long time to find the correct spelling of that) clocks.]

So when the polls open in SC at 7AM… and we poll workers must be there at Six – and they don’t close until 7 PM… etc with all the set up and close up and take the results to the central office the poll “Clerk” must do… Well… I just felt intimidated… and all that. But now we ARE a team and she does the difficult stuff, like check the registration book… and talk with people who have forgotten what identifies them as a voter and all that… -- it’s a grueling day… and I’ve finally figured out I NEED TO HELP HER…. But I think she ends up helping me.

Anyway… we get it done… and are looking forward to being a part of this one coming up. I think it’s going to be a page-turner. We’ll see. I hope you’re paying attention wherever you are… educating yourselves… cutting through the smoke and steam – and trusting in the Lord to give you wisdom. I truly believe had it not been for the Lord’s watching over us – and this nation… we would not be as far along as we are.  And I also believe it is incumbent upon Bible believing Christians who want to serve the Lord to the best of their ability – to thoroughly prepare and do the work to be informed and to be a responsible citizen in appreciation for the blessings of the Lord.

So… Once more I climb down from the soap box… wishing you well for the coming day and all that will transpire between now and the decisions made which we are privileged to take part in. May HE be glorified. Amen.

 Cordially IN HIM,

Barbara and Jack Buttram

  “JUST A MINUTE”

DOES THIS REALLY MAKE SENSE?

Just a Minute: -- In Chicago there are placards reading – ABRE: Stands for: Anybody But Rahm Emanuel. Apparently it’s a large and growing club in the windy city.

Yesterday, Rahm, began his Hillary Style ‘listening tour’ of Chicago’s public transit stops. -- Have you ever heard of Tom Dort? He’s the Cook County Sheriff … which is Chicago and thinks he might like to be Mayor. He’s lined up John Trippi who has advised Howard Dean and Sen. John Edwards – some real winners.

The Chicago City Clerk feels Rahm slighted him after some favors were done -- Others on the lengthening list include the guy who filled Emanuel’s Congressional seat abandoned when he went to work in the White House; also a  well known Hispanic leader, and Rev. James Meeks, Pastor of the 20,000 member Salem Baptist Church is reported interested.

Chicago newspapers report a line-up who consider Mr. Emanuel out of touch – been in Washington too long -- a Carpet Bagger who has a renter who won’t move out of Emanuel’s blue-shingled house.

Does all that portend a smooth campaign?

BED BUGS DON'T BITE -- WHO SAYS? Just A Minute Radio for Blogspot on Monday 101004

Great day to be alive in the Carolina’s and surrounding countryside -- we think…

We’re just beginning to get the first nips of Fall in the air… I believe the early morning temperature the other day was forecast for 49 degrees. I didn’t get up right at sunrise to check it out… but I think it was accurate.

So the seasons are changing and we’re just past the Fall Equinox when the sun “passes over” that imaginary line in the heavens that indicates it’s continuing its northernward journey to the arctic circle… and the LONG  NIGHT approaches.

Well… that seems to be the mood inside the Beltway at the lobbyshops on ‘K’St. and certain parts of Capitol Hill – although most of the denizens of the Hill are home, trying to convince those nosey constituents that they *have* been voting (or in many cases  this year, have NOT been voting in the best interests of their constituents.) All-though, from the reports of dozens of pollsters – except the purely partisan ones – it appears this year is definitely not the year to emphasize how long you’ve been in the legislature. It was either Will Rogers or Mark Twain – maybe both – who said something like no man’s life, property or family were safe when Congress was in session.  This year seems to have been the proof of the pudding.

Conservatives were not successful in cutting back spending on almost any score. Neither could either side claim resounding victories on things like the Card Check or various other items on the Union’s union check list. However… the contest may well turn out to have an even more bitter ending when Congress comes back for the so-called ‘lame duck’ session – where the ‘retiring’ members of the legislative bodies may cast their votes without fear their electorate will punish them at the next election. After Nov. 2nd the figuring is that will all be past and the history books for all intents and purposes will be closed.

Well – enough forecasting for today… we’ll be back tomorrow to see what it brings forth.

            Cordially, IN HIM

“JUST A MINUTE”

BED BUGS DON’T BITE – WHO SAYS?

Just a Minute: -- I’ve done the math… Since this is the 277th day of the year and November 2nd is the 306th --- there are exactly 29 days until then.  Now I don’t want to write another 17 stories between now and then that say the Democrats are expecting not to lose very many seats and the Republicans are really expecting to organize a route – with the help of sympathetic Tea Party members… Although it does look like something along those lines may happen.

So I’m looking around for something else that requires attention… I came across it from the Myrtle Beach Sun – and the Clemson Extension service. It seems bedbugs are on the rise.  Myrtle Beach is a favorite hang out because travelers come there from so many different destinations… and go back to so many places. Clemson is quoted as saying bedbugs are on the rise for the past couple of decades – but gives no reason other than the little critters love to find a warm cozy place to spend the winter… and of course the beach comes to mind.

Now see… I’ve taken your mind completely off the election – in JUST A MINUTE.
