DOES THIS REALLY MAKE SENSE? FOR Just a Minute Radio - Tues 101005

Welcome again to the environs of cranking out observations on this long-anticipated opportunity to express opinion at the voting station.

The little electronic machines that seem so flimsy and are so heavy must be treated with care and nowadays have to produce a paper trail that really *is* a mile long… and from time to time does not want to cooperate are nonetheless the tools of the process. May I urge you to take full advantage of it.

My wife – who has greater patience – and I have become a team of poll workers. Heretofore in the Commonwealth of Virginia and then the states of NC, and SC she has resolutely gotten up early – and of course I gave her moral support, but little else. And we would get through the voting season in pretty good shape.  When we lived in the National Capital area for about ten years in the 60’s and 70’s we were at the center of the voting universe. And that’s where she learned the ‘trade’ (which it isn’t… it’s a responsibility).

Now we are off in the hinterlands of “flyover country” as the entertainment industry considers the land taking up space between New York and Los Angeles (with occasional excursions to Hawaii, Florida or some place overseas.)  And while Barb is more of a morning person than I am – [my little grey cells don’t begin to produce worthy output until sometime after 4PM… and often later… which means we work on different diurnal (it took me an *awfully* long time to find the correct spelling of that) clocks.]

So when the polls open in SC at 7AM… and we poll workers must be there at Six – and they don’t close until 7 PM… etc with all the set up and close up and take the results to the central office the poll “Clerk” must do… Well… I just felt intimidated… and all that. But now we ARE a team and she does the difficult stuff, like check the registration book… and talk with people who have forgotten what identifies them as a voter and all that… -- it’s a grueling day… and I’ve finally figured out I NEED TO HELP HER…. But I think she ends up helping me.

Anyway… we get it done… and are looking forward to being a part of this one coming up. I think it’s going to be a page-turner. We’ll see. I hope you’re paying attention wherever you are… educating yourselves… cutting through the smoke and steam – and trusting in the Lord to give you wisdom. I truly believe had it not been for the Lord’s watching over us – and this nation… we would not be as far along as we are.  And I also believe it is incumbent upon Bible believing Christians who want to serve the Lord to the best of their ability – to thoroughly prepare and do the work to be informed and to be a responsible citizen in appreciation for the blessings of the Lord.

So… Once more I climb down from the soap box… wishing you well for the coming day and all that will transpire between now and the decisions made which we are privileged to take part in. May HE be glorified. Amen.

 Cordially IN HIM,

Barbara and Jack Buttram

  “JUST A MINUTE”

DOES THIS REALLY MAKE SENSE?

Just a Minute: -- In Chicago there are placards reading – ABRE: Stands for: Anybody But Rahm Emanuel. Apparently it’s a large and growing club in the windy city.

Yesterday, Rahm, began his Hillary Style ‘listening tour’ of Chicago’s public transit stops. -- Have you ever heard of Tom Dort? He’s the Cook County Sheriff … which is Chicago and thinks he might like to be Mayor. He’s lined up John Trippi who has advised Howard Dean and Sen. John Edwards – some real winners.

The Chicago City Clerk feels Rahm slighted him after some favors were done -- Others on the lengthening list include the guy who filled Emanuel’s Congressional seat abandoned when he went to work in the White House; also a  well known Hispanic leader, and Rev. James Meeks, Pastor of the 20,000 member Salem Baptist Church is reported interested.

Chicago newspapers report a line-up who consider Mr. Emanuel out of touch – been in Washington too long -- a Carpet Bagger who has a renter who won’t move out of Emanuel’s blue-shingled house.

Does all that portend a smooth campaign?
