GIBBS DRIVE FROM BACKSEAT - Just A Minute Radio for Thursday 101028

Closer and closer we come… the suspense is …. Well… awful…

Remember the black and white film “Psycho” -- ?  Just about scared everyone out of taking a shower unless someone stood outside the locked door.  “Jaws” they say had the same effect – I heard a full grown college kid say he was afraid to bathe in his tub for weeks after seeing “Jaws” – such is the power of the film-maker who controls suspense.

Speaking of Suspense… it was the title of a long-running CBS radio drama that featured masters of suspense like Arch Obler – who wrote a masterpiece of radio drama called “Chicken Heart.”  I won’t reveal the story line to you… but if you can find an old recording and listen to it in a semi-dark room… I guarantee you’ll experience suspense in spades.

So here we are on a Thursday before the Friday that ends this week… then there’s only Monday that stands between us and the voting that takes place on election day next Tuesday…. Doesn’t’ the suspense make you tingle?  Who’s gonna win Cal-lee-for-ni-ay?  You’d think an old action-thriller actor like the Governor would know how to dial it back a bit… Jerry Brown vs. Meg Whitman… Barbara Boxer vs Carly Fiorina – it’s almost more than a person can stand.

But… by this time *next* week most of the hot air will be out of the balloon – and possibly they’ll still be counting ballots in Washington State or half a dozen other places.  Ohio is practically worn out with John Kasich being there… and Mr. Obama looking over his shoulder every weekend – They’ve all taken the spotlight away from Rob Blagojevich – that’s *one* positive development. – And into this mix we’re going to throw the world series?  Have Mercy!

Well… my suspenders are about worn out.  I’m going to take a nap… See you tomorrow. DV.

“JUST A MINUTE”

GIBBS DRIVES FROM BACKSEAT

Just a minute -- Robert Gibbs, the Alabama red head, speaking for the President, magnified his boss’s flagrant faux-pas yesterday, digging the hole deeper.

Obama flew off script aiming for a bon mot and faked a welcome to Republicans to join his campaign bus – but said they gotta sit in the back.”

The off-handed, racially insensitive slur occasioned a response from Dr. Timothy F. Johnson, a black Republican who heads the National Black Republican Association, who said Obama should immediately apologize for the offensive reference -- adding:
“Americans are sick and tired of these divisive statements the president continues to make -- Our first objective is November 2, 2010 [then] to find the next president of the United States, and retire … Obama to Chicago, Hawaii, or Kenya…”

Such a remark made by a Republican president would have triggered a riot from Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson. Robert Gibbs portrayed it as just part of the metaphor the President’s used describing driving the economy into the ditch, adding “We’re certainly concerned with backseat driving.”
