EVERYBODY GOTTA LOVE SOMEBODY SOMETIME -- Just A Minute Radio for Monday October 19th 2009

Hello Everyone – It’s a *frosty* morning say the Weather Bureau Boys here on the Caroliner Line!

And the fellers at “Earl ‘n’ Lester’s Bait Shop and Sushi Bar” are all hangin’ close to the stove on this first morning that really *feels* like fall.

I don’t have nearly enough leaves in the yard for a stiff back yet.  I did have the young man who cuts the back 40 with his zero-turn mower for me, come chop up leaves and cut down the last crop of grass (I think) for the summer. But most likely I’ll need him to come back and make mulch out of those dratted yellow poplar leaves that started fallin’ in July. The water oaks never give up until sometime in March when the new buds finally push the old leaves off.

Seems like raking leaves ranks right alongside of bailing out the Atlantic with a teacup when it comes to seeing real progress… A good snowfall comes along and does the job of ‘neatin’ up the yard… but sometimes if it comes too early it bends too many bush branches… and deforms the evergreens with a heavy wet snow…

Well, if we didn’t have the weather to gripe about… we’d have to get started on the government… and fr’ gooness sake that’s a job like cleanin’ out stables… It *really* is never done.  [ I can see some of you have never cleaned out stables… so you don’t know what we’re talking about (J) – It’s just as well.]

One of the most forgotten bits of news from about this time last year was when Candidate Obama was in Chester, Virginia promising as President he would handle negotiations on legislation like this:

“I’m gonna get everyone around a big wooden table – and it’ll be televised on C-span – so *everyone* can see who’s arguing for what… Who is representing who’s interests and all that… It’s time we had some TRANSPARENCY in government.”

Yeah…. That was then! This is now! Three Senators Dodd, Baucus and Reid are sitting around a table *behind closed doors* not a TV camera within 100 yards of the place.  They’ll be joined by Rahm Emanuel and somebody else – but you’ll never see any of it on any TV news show.  And this is what has happened to the ‘GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH’ – only I think that is the trademark of “Ringling Bros – Barnum & Bailey Circus.”

You guys in Congress… you’re going to get yourself a law suit for copyright infringement if you’re not careful.

Cordially, IN HIM

Jack

“JUST A MINUTE”

EVERYBODY GOTTA LOVE SOMEBODY SOMETIME

Just A Minute – We hear Sarah Palin’s publisher, will make a Tuesday announcement -- her much anticipated book will hit the stands Nov. 17th.  It presently tops major best-seller lists in advance orders.

A print run of 1.5 million will launch “Going Rogue: An American Life.”  That matches the print-run for Teddy Kennedy’s memoir.

Mrs. Palin’s book was reset from spring to November for the holiday gift-buying season.  She’s also riding a huge demand as a speaker and tops the current personality list for media interest.

The whole family moved to San Diego to be near her collaborator, Lynn Vincent, formerly of World Magazine, while working on the manuscript.  Now the race for copy-editing and fact-checking is on to meet the stepped-up publishing schedule aimed to garner pre-holiday sales.

Where did the title “Going Rogue” come from?  Apparently, it’s part of Palin’s mischievous humor.  “Slate” writer John Dickerson tagged her with “Has Sarah Palin Gone Rogue?” last October.  She’s turning it into a badge of honor.

          Way to go, Sarah.

ROBERT REICH'S REVEALING SPEECH - Just A Minute Radio for Friday 10-16-09

            IT’S FRIDAY!!!! Shore nuff….

Well it’s been a wet and somewhat mildewed week by my chart.  A bit more sunshine would be welcome – especially since we seem going full speed into the fall cooling season.

In our family we have some Minnesota relatives visiting for a week or more… I know they feel like it’s balmy… and maybe it is. But the ‘nip’ in the air is present – and the pumpkins have indeed appeared.

Although I walked into one home-improvement / hardware store this week…and a whole big corner up front was already full of CHRISTMAS TREES.  I couldn’t believe it.  I spoke to one of the clerks… he said it was an astonishment to him also. They took a clean jump, plumb over Halloween, Thanksgiving and the start of shopping – and cut to the *important stuff* -- gettin’ the folks to loosen their pocketbooks for Christmas!

Well – if you’re a store owner and still got a lot of stuff left over from last Christmas… I guess I can sympathize… but frankly, Halloween isn’t our thing now that we don’t have little ones around… and I DO enjoy THANKSGIVING. I believe that’s for me the *real* beginning of the Season of Christmas and hit’s the target because giving THANKS is what we never get too much of. (Not a great grammatical pinnacle… but you get my drift.)

We do have a great deal for which to be THANKFUL and I’d just as soon get started on that early – we can never fully appreciate what God has done for us – and how bountifully HE has blessed our nation. I’m only ashamed of how little we acknowledge HIM.

Well… Let me hear from you if you have an opinion on today’s program. Your remarks are always welcome!

“JUST A MINUTE”

ROBERT REICH’S REVEALING SPEECH

Just A Minute – In a 2007 speech recorded at UC Berkeley, Robert Reich, from the Clinton Cabinet, gave his thoughts on the Democrat’s health care program, he thought candidates might conceal:

(quote)"You… particularly you young people, particularly you young healthy people -- you're going to have to pay more.  And by the way, [when we all get] very old, we're not going to give you all that technology and all those drugs for the last couple of years of your life to keep you maybe going for another couple of months. [That's] too expensive . . . so we're going to let you die…” (un-quote)

He further promised a government program will “force” drug companies, insurance and care providers … to reduce costs, which will mean less innovation, fewer new products … “which means you’re probably not going to live much longer than your parents."

Hmm… Wonder if that has anything to do with the Republicans recently winning a total of six state legislative seats from Democrats in special elections this year, in Tennessee, Oklahoma, Delaware, Texas, New Hampshire and Virginia… think that’d make other Democrats nervous?

WHAT'S UP WITH DOWNWARD MOBILITY? - Just A Minute Radio for Wednesday 10-14-09

Howdy again… in the middle of a week. Nice to have you with us today.

The eternal-infernal debating society -- known as the U.S. Congress -- continues on it’s ‘special circumstance’ way – work week from Tuesday morning till Thursday afternoon with a lot of griping thrown in when they have to work extra days.

One of our Senators here in South Carolina had a sort of semi-TownHall type of meeting at a local university and there was a whole lot of hootin’ and hollerin’ going on. [No overt violence I’m aware of.] But the Senator Lindsey Graham had to out-shout some of his audience and tell them to “Chill Out” several times. One local newspaper here in the Greenville area hardly mentioned it; another in Spartanburg built it up as a fiery meeting.  Graham isn’t up for re-election next year having bested his opponent in a fairly close race last year.

You see “Lensey” Graham quite often on the tube because he’s one of the Gang of 6 or 7 or 14… wherever the spotlight falls. He gained his expertise during the Clinton impeachment trial when he was a House member from the Anderson area of SC. Another SC legislative colleague told me once, “You don’t want to get caught between Lindsey and a TV camera.”  He doesn’t quite have the face-time hunger that seems to drive Senator Chuck Schumer of NY – but then who does?

Lindsey has been big chums with Senator John McCain, which also tended to provide him a lot of tube-time… So he’s attracting more folks that would like to steal his seat.  But he’s got five years and a little more before he has to face the SC electors again… who knows where lightning might strike.

And the two governor’s races to watch are in Virginia and New Jersey.  I’m rather dubious about the GOP candidate’s chances in NJ against John Corzine (former Senator and former Goldman Sach’s fame) who is in a close race with his GOP opponent.  Corzine is a regular runner… and though balding and in his 60’s I guess, fancies himself still an athlete “in contention.”  I say that because his chief criticism of his opponent is he’s FAT!  A rather weak argument I’d think in NJ – but then what do I know about corrupt politics.  Corzine can count the $$$ out of his own bank account without pain and will possibly continue to buy his way into the hearts of a majority of voting Jerseyites.

It really seems strange to be writing politics less than 12 months after we did it all last year. But I used to live in Virginia – which specializes, like NJ, in off year elections.  But it term limits its governors to one term of four years at a time. Nice job dear Old Dominion!  We could use a *LOAD* of term limited politicos all over our map of the dear old USA. Then the ‘anointed’ ones would not think they had taken a long leave from Mt. Olympus and have to be snagged back down to earth every so often.

Well… here I am ranting in the middle of the week. Stick with us – we get better soon.

SOLVING A PUZZLE -- Just a Minute Radio for Monday 10-12-0

Hello on a due to be rainy Monday… Makes it hard to hang clothes outside, right?  I remember.

Lots of things these days are easier than they *were*.  I remember Mom hanging clothes out – because I helped… I was hardly tall enough to reach the clothes line… but I could hold the clothespin bag… a very important assignment. Funny though… I don’t remember a LOT of times we had to take them in or re-hang.  I do remember the ladies saying if the clothes froze on the line… they still would dry most of the time because the humidity was a lot lower. Later I learned you call that sublimation – (I think) – to cause a solid or a gas to change state without becoming a liquid – I ran into that again when I was learning to fly IFR – getting ice off the wings.

Oh, well… lots of things we learn that are useful – and some that are useless… Or maybe it’s just trying to teach us that seems useless – at least to frustrated teachers.

Today’s JUST A MINUTE deals with subject matter at Harvard in a class called JUSTICE… in which the professor deals with subjects like health care reform especially as it affects the elderly. And other moral questions like same sex marriage… or abortion… It was quite an interesting essay in this past weekend edition of the Wall St. Journal. We have neither time nor space nor patience to deal with it here.  But if you’re interested there’s likely a copy in the local library. We’ve got a lot of catching up to do.

And what about that Peace Prize? Isn’t that as they say a Piece of Work?  I guess we’ll leave that to the scholars, magicians and moral theorists … it’ surely isn’t safe in the hands of politicians. They’ll never get out of that conundrum – kind of like a cornfield maze only more difficult.

Well… next time – maybe we’ll talk about building a root cellar.  That’s nice and peaceful.

            Cordially, IN HIM

PS – Thanks to all our friends in Spindale for inviting us to the 100th Anniversary of the Adaville Church. It was a lot of fun seeing so many good friends.

“JUST A MINUTE”

SOLVING A PUZZLE

Just A Minute – Professor Michael J. Sandel, who teaches Government at Harvard – regularly inculcates undergraduates with a course, entitled “Justice.”  It’s taught by a man presumably imparting wisdom to yet malleable minds.  But given the Harvard’s bent these days it doesn’t seem to hang together – at least to my un-malleable mind.

The professor’s class is popular filling a thousand seat auditorium each time it’s offered.  He is a well-known “communitarian” according to the Weekend Wall St. Journal writer, Charlotte Allen.  The professor challenges his students with puzzles – not unlike the popular Sudoku puzzles that many – including my wife, but not me – find challenging.  It’s supposed to bring progressive – not to say liberal – thinking to bear on questions of health-care rationing favoring younger over older patients.  According to Ms. Allen, many of the students walk out of the class as clueless as they were when they came in about solving moral problems.

For instance, as for restricting expensive Medicare treatments to those young enough to be “worth it” – the professor fails to emphasize we all grow older.

This is “higher” education?

RE-CHECK ON FACT CHECKS -- Just A Minute Radio for Friday 10-09-09

            Hello Pardner… IT’S FRIDDDDDAAAAYYYY!

And it’s been a crowded week I fear. Well, no fear, for it’s almost over – just a lot of things have transpired I believe.  And like the man says -- “Facts are stubborn things.” Sometimes not so eloquently – just the “He said -- She said” kind of back and forth.

But sometimes there comes the day of reckoning – and things have to ‘whoa’ and be sorted out by truth.

Unfortunately for America, that day of reckoning seems to be very far off… too long in fact.  But perhaps that’s the way with lesson learning… the more painful conclusions often bring the more lasting results.  Possibly the Nation will survive through it all… and be the stronger and more truthful for it.

Sometimes in conversation about how ‘bad’ things are when it comes to government – I haul out my John Adams biography – not the literal one, the ephemeral, it’s lighter to carry around – and remind my friends that President Adams in the foundling days of our Republic was the second President of the United States – and it was on his watch the Congress created and the President signed the Aliens and Sedition Act which allowed government to put people in jail for criticizing it.  Now remember this was after the Constitution and the first ten amendments had already been adopted. It was a crazy time and we were learning our way as a Nation.  Ultimately the Act was taken off the books – before it was run through the courts I think… but we survived it.

We survived the traitorous selling of secrets in World War Two by the Rosenbergs, the machinations of Alger Hiss in the Department of State, more recently CIA operatives selling secrets to those who intended to do America harm.  Tokyo Rose is but a footnote in Pacific War history -- Aaron Burr was an accomplished American turncoat General – and to this day is a hero in the U.K. – but when he didn’t get what he wanted… he changed sides.

All that to say, God has blessed our nation with good weather when Gen. Eisenhower picked the day to cross to the Normandy beach head; HE gave us air superiority over the German Air force in the Battle of Britain; HE caused the Japanese to overreach too soon in building their Pacific fleet. Their blow was a terrible one at Pearl Harbor but early enough so the American war machine could crank up and crank out a miraculous amount of armament for our troops, Navy and Air Forces.

We are blessed – and we need to be aware of it – and be thankful as well as watchful.  I would not be able to make this program today if the global forces arrayed against America had been successful. HE is to be thanked and glorified – let’s be sure to do that this weekend.

 “JUST A MINUTE”

RE-CHECK ON FACT CHECKS

Just A Minute – Last year just about this time Senator Obama was in a debate in Oxford, Mississippi. Taxes came up. From the transcript I read: (quote)

MCCAIN: "… Senator Obama has shifted on a number of occasions. He has voted in the United States Senate to increase taxes on people who make as low as $42,000 a year."

OBAMA: "That's not true, John. That's not true."

McCAIN: "… that's just a fact. Again, you can look it up."

OBAMA: "Look, it's just not true."

In fact Congressional Quarterly – the gold standard for Capitol Hill reporting says "McCain Was Right" -- Barack Obama Voted Twice In Favor Of The Democrats' FY2009 Budget Resolution To Raise Taxes On Those Making Just $42,000 A Year.  Senate Conference Resolution records vote #70 Obama voted Yea – Vote #142 Obama Voted Yea.

So – despite lying about it on national TV – CQ says: … Obama did vote higher taxes on people with annual incomes as low as $42,000.

Does that jog your memory on what American people let themselves in for almost exactly a year ago?

BUSINESS ETHICS CONFERENCE AT BJU -- Just A Minute Radio for Wednesday 10-07-09

Hello again… no … it’s NOT Friday after all… it’s Wednesday.

But it’s a great day to be alive – and checking on things. And that’s what we’re here for today.

There’s a really big-time business conference being hosted on the Bob Jones University campus beginning Thursday Oct. 15 through the following Saturday noon. (You will still have time to get in 18 holes after it concludes on Saturday.)

I was impressed with the caliber of the speakers who are also presenting discussions on business ethics – and if there’s ever been an expressed need for ethics – that’s surely one. Several of those making presentations are BJU graduates – some are not including a Navy officer cum Airline pilot. Several have headed major manufacturing operations – and presently the current CEO of one of the major fast lube chains.

The aim – as is detailed on today’s JUST A MINUTE is to have business people as well as college age students, interact with some real live leaders in the business world who know “what it’s like out there.” Sorry we got into it a little late to let you know… but if you’ll call the BJU number 242-5100 they’ll put you in touch with people who can give you all the details – or checkout the website which is http://www.allforexcellence.org/ – and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised – I know I was.

See you Friday – maybe. (J)

HISTORY INCOMPLETE -- for - Just A Minute Radio Monday 10-05-09

Great Day – it’s MONDAY…. I know you’re excited about that… the TV is playing loudly!

Here’s news out of Washington: Sometimes people don’t tell the *whole* truth.

Here’s news of Hollywood: Sometimes people think they’re too big to fail… or be arrested … or put in Jail – and besides that it was 30 years ago.

Here’s the news out of Chicago: Jeremiah who?  Acorn what?  I was a neighborhood organizer – until it wasn’t really smart for me to be a neighborhood organizer any more.

Here’s the news out of New Yorkkkkk….

(Off stage) Turn off that TV – wide screen or not.  You can’t trust what *anybody* on it says any more.

Well… turns out it’s time to go for some ‘truth in labeling’ – Maybe it’s time to do more reading, assembling and assimilating the facts, trends and trustworthy information – and do your own thinking.

It’s strange, but people will do almost anything in these times in order to have someone else do their thinking for them. It ranges from joining a book club – having a panel to make choices – to signing with a mutual fund so someone else can be blamed for picking the wrong stocks.  America I suppose will have to experience  enough discomfort at the hands of others to get back in the groove of making their own decisions – and entertaining a word that’s getting a lot of use these days – ACCOUNTABILITY!

No need for me to go off on a tangent about that. It ranges from *everybody* wanting it to *nobody* wanting it – and all points in between.  Let’s pray we get it right!

“JUST A MINUTE”

HISTORY INCOMPLETE

Just A Minute – Revealing half-truth, is far more dangerous than flat-out lying.  Now comes an admittedly ‘incomplete’ account about President Clinton with  Branch Taylor’s book, “Wrestling History with the President.” The Clinton-friendly Washington Post says it’s Clinton History, “with a few pages missing.”

That’s typical political news these days.  I deviate from commentary today to just plain old-fashioned complaining.  Taylor’s book, doesn’t profess to tell the truth and nothing but the truth’ – but presents an excerpt of tapes the President invited Taylor to make.  He just skips the “Lewinsky” affair and so contributes to “skewed” political reporting everybody distrusts nowadays.

Roman Polanski’s arrest for raping a child – attracts scores of Hollywood apologists who are mostly without clean hands themselves.  A TV late-night host makes multiple jokes, with impunity, about a political candidate’s teen-aged child’s unwed pregnancy, while - it now develops - he’s simultaneously  engaged in lengthy and shameless immorality.

I’ll defer to another day to point out our national disease of becoming “rotten” to the core. But meantime, Christian believers let us pray for genuine repentance and righteousness.

HE'S AIMING FOR THE BRASS RING - Just A Minute Radio for Friday 10-02-09

            Howdy – it’s FRIDAYYYYYYY!

And the days are getting shorter – and the nights are getting cooler – and the Old Farmer’s Almanac gives advice about building a root cellar to store apples and root crops – and we used to do that.

But the competition for the 2016 Olympics is on in Copenhagen – and Michelle and Barack thought it might be nice to nip over to Copenhagen where the IOC  meets to give a little pitch for Chicago. Nemmine that an honor student was beaten to death in Chicago’s streets; or another is in the hospital from a skull facture administered by another student. Ignore the 300 student deaths at the hands of other students in Chicago last year – and many more before that.

Let Mayor Daley proclaim the city is in deficit status and any overruns in time for the police and fire departments will have to be made up by the taxpayers – and pay no attention that a majority of Chicago’s citizens don’t appear from polling numbers to want the games to come.  Of course, the records of what Olympics bring to a city are checkered… like millions being lost on the Beijing games – and the winter ones in Utah being a big loss had it not been for Mitt Romney stepping in to manage the effort.

All this makes it seem like an Alice in Wonderland scenario. I’ve been to Chicago. I really don’t care to live there – but I’m not at enemies with those who do. But when we’re neck deep in two wars… we want to bring all the troops home ASAP and with no more loss of life or money… why are we intent on punishing ourselves this way – or in destroying Rio’s hopes of being the first South American city to host the Olympics?  It doesn’t make sense.

But then as William, the Bard of Avon was wont to write: “Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.”  Perhaps we’ll soon get a stronger whiff than we want.

“JUST A MINUTE”

HE’S AIMING FOR THE BRASS RING

Just A Minute – David Broder, Washington Post liberal columnist, pleads for the Olympics to come to his hometown, the murder capitol of the United States.

The main-stream media sees nothing amiss for Michelle Obama to make an 18 hour separate plane trip helping “Hubby’ make his 15 minute pitch for exposing the seamy side of Chicago to the world. He’ll spend several million bucks flying everybody, including Oprah and all the retinue, to Denmark while we’re in the middle of two wars, the general is pleading for troops and has not spoken face to face with the President since he got the assignment. The Commander-in-Chief will spend time and American-Taxpayer treasure just to make a sports pitch for his home town.  Something smells bad.

Mr. Obama revealed his obsession for flying Air Force One during his first week in office. He ordered the Jumbo-jet to carry him from Andrews to Williamsburg. It could have been done as readily, rapidly and for a fraction of the cost in the Marine One Helicopter.

Maybe in Copenhagen it will dawn on him what’s rotten in the state of Denmark.
