WHAT'S UP WITH DOWNWARD MOBILITY? - Just A Minute Radio for Wednesday 10-14-09

Howdy again… in the middle of a week. Nice to have you with us today.

The eternal-infernal debating society -- known as the U.S. Congress -- continues on it’s ‘special circumstance’ way – work week from Tuesday morning till Thursday afternoon with a lot of griping thrown in when they have to work extra days.

One of our Senators here in South Carolina had a sort of semi-TownHall type of meeting at a local university and there was a whole lot of hootin’ and hollerin’ going on. [No overt violence I’m aware of.] But the Senator Lindsey Graham had to out-shout some of his audience and tell them to “Chill Out” several times. One local newspaper here in the Greenville area hardly mentioned it; another in Spartanburg built it up as a fiery meeting.  Graham isn’t up for re-election next year having bested his opponent in a fairly close race last year.

You see “Lensey” Graham quite often on the tube because he’s one of the Gang of 6 or 7 or 14… wherever the spotlight falls. He gained his expertise during the Clinton impeachment trial when he was a House member from the Anderson area of SC. Another SC legislative colleague told me once, “You don’t want to get caught between Lindsey and a TV camera.”  He doesn’t quite have the face-time hunger that seems to drive Senator Chuck Schumer of NY – but then who does?

Lindsey has been big chums with Senator John McCain, which also tended to provide him a lot of tube-time… So he’s attracting more folks that would like to steal his seat.  But he’s got five years and a little more before he has to face the SC electors again… who knows where lightning might strike.

And the two governor’s races to watch are in Virginia and New Jersey.  I’m rather dubious about the GOP candidate’s chances in NJ against John Corzine (former Senator and former Goldman Sach’s fame) who is in a close race with his GOP opponent.  Corzine is a regular runner… and though balding and in his 60’s I guess, fancies himself still an athlete “in contention.”  I say that because his chief criticism of his opponent is he’s FAT!  A rather weak argument I’d think in NJ – but then what do I know about corrupt politics.  Corzine can count the $$$ out of his own bank account without pain and will possibly continue to buy his way into the hearts of a majority of voting Jerseyites.

It really seems strange to be writing politics less than 12 months after we did it all last year. But I used to live in Virginia – which specializes, like NJ, in off year elections.  But it term limits its governors to one term of four years at a time. Nice job dear Old Dominion!  We could use a *LOAD* of term limited politicos all over our map of the dear old USA. Then the ‘anointed’ ones would not think they had taken a long leave from Mt. Olympus and have to be snagged back down to earth every so often.

Well… here I am ranting in the middle of the week. Stick with us – we get better soon.

            Cordially, IN HIM
