REPUBS SAY --- *BACK TO THE FUTURE* -- for Just A Minute Radio -- Thursday 110106

A Cordial good day to you on this Thursday

Sorry you’re not running into this high quality courtesy all over the place. But seems like the fountains of good will are in draught condition there in Washington … maybe they’ll get another blizzard that will improve their water table – and good humor.  New York already has a graduate school in how to get along with your mayor without even trying.  Gov. Christie of New Jersey was put under such pressure he even was trying to explain what was so nice about being in Palm Beach, Florida when the blizzard hit New Jersey.

But… better to let those sleeping dogs lie.  If you stir ‘em up much they’ll get to yappin’ atcha … And Gov. Christie has notably good manners when people want to argue with him at news conferences – or any conferences. I think the snow has slowed down his appearance schedule.  He still has a huge battle on his hands with the unions… teachers unions… govt. workers unions… I don’t know what all.  I’ve not heard if the Brotherhood of Trainmen and  Railroad Locomotive Engineers (whatever their *real* name is) boycotting one of his meetings. Maybe I just don’t have the correct union names.

Watching the House of Representatives re-organize itself yesterday didn’t set any speed records… but it was interesting.  Perhaps we should arrange to do that more often!  I think the Tea Party folks are already working on it.

I don’t usually watch late night TV…. The comics are rather old and un-funny… AND… I drop off to sleep too early. However, someone sends me the nights worth of jokes… and I’ll tell you this… It’s a whole lot easier to ignore them when it’s on the computer screen and takes only one button to delete than it is to clean out the e-mail mailbox of all that junk.

The 112th Congress gives every evidence of being one of the historical congresses.  The111th is already in the record books I think – something like winning the gold-brick award for getting the least amount of work done – while spending the greatest amount of taxpayers dollars.

Perhaps some of the new freshmen (and women) congress people will give a lot of attention to that in the coming weeks.  It will be interesting to watch.

Meanwhile the rest of the world wants us to look their way. Europe is having it’s troubles.  They need Mrs. Pelosi to come over and show them how to spend more money ineffectively now that she’s got less to do. Other countries like Ireland, Greece and perhaps France or some in the Baltics could use some coaching. Russia is a hopeless and hapless case.  They’re even thinking about re-installing Mr. Putin… he’s been out of action too long to hear him tell it.

Well  -- off to bed… too much in the way of duty calling… Snooze time.

All the best… Cordially, IN HIM

“JUST A MINUTE”

REPUBS SAY – BACK TO THE FUTURE.

Just a minute:  A Rudyard Kipling phrase -- “The tumult and the shouting dies.” – came to mind as Nancy Pelosi handed back an oversized mallet to the same man who had handed a gavel to her four years earlier.

She attempted to dust herself with the glory of becoming the first woman to rule in the “People’s House.”  -- perhaps she fears what Republicans and Independent Tea Party participants devoutly hope will happen in about two years.

One doesn’t have to scratch the surface deeply to perceive deep determination, that a similar ceremony of returning the reins of power will engage the current President two years hence.  Journalists continue to point to the extra trillion in government debt accumulated in a record-breaking spending binge in the last seven months. Those words in bold letters might well have been the backdrop on Capitol Hill yesterday.

Heath Shuler, congressman from a neighboring North Carolina district, got only 11 votes yesterday but even the stock market seemed to be cheerier.  What may happen in two years when “the ‘tumult and the shouting dies?”
