IT'S JUST LIKE PULLIN' TAFFY - for Just A Minute Radio - Wednesday 110119

Well hello again…. It’s still winter… I’ve not heard much groundhog day talk so far.

Today on JUST A MINUTE we’re trying to get a hold on the problems of trying to stop a fire of pushing and shoving when it’s already underway.

This wrestling match in Congress today is supposed to be a decision-making process of what to do about what is un-promisingly called “Obama  Care”.

There seems to be little doubt *something* will be passed. In fact something already HAS been passed,  It happened last year when the Democrats had more than enough votes in Congress to do pretty much whatever they wanted.

But uncertainties crept in on the part of those who knew they had to go home to face the music for the kinds of bills they were running up.  That situation still stands.  What’s underway now is an attempt to ‘unring’ the bell.  That is to undo the prospective ‘damage’ being done for decades now and in the future. Our debt situation stands at an all time high – we’ve seen what happens to countries that forget somebody has to pay for stuff sometime… it can’t just float around in the International marketplace and never get resolved.  But then that’s what they used to say about the tremendous debt overhanging the USA after WWII…

Somehow we survived… apparently due to economic growth -- But people who weren’t even born then have made the decision some debts really don’t have to be paid.  They just exist in the books and on paper.  I suppose it could be called “brother in law” debt… it’s on the cuff… but he’ll never try *seriously* to collect.

Then there’s the theory I’ve heard over several times that says: If you borrow $100 from the bank… that’s what you owe…  But if you borrow enough to break the bank (say several trillion) … then you “own” the bank and they (the bankers) are never going to call your debt… because if they do they’ll destroy them.

(I never quite figured out that step.)  But then I’m not an international banker. So… now we see Ireland and Greece and a half dozen other nations (which happens to include the U.S.) and getting them to pay off the debt the have contracted… well nobody wants to see the world’s economic system crash do they?  So we just struggle along like the waiter who is about to drop a tray full of filled up glasses and has stumbled… but must run to keep from falling flat on his face and breaking the whole tray full….

(Apparently I never caught on to the story line in that one either.)…  All my lenders seemed to have a certain hand held out for payment… which I tried to pay – always at a cost… which I guess the banker didn’t want to cut off… I was a ‘customer’ – although the theory said I was an ‘owner.’ No one ever told me that!.

So much for economics… never understood it anyway.  I suppose we’ll just ride it out… sort of like the passengers on the Titanic?  Or perhaps Captain Hu – who is visiting the White House this week… is ‘looking out after his ‘holdings’ in the USA I suppose… and he seems not to be worried.  How does the saying go?  “Very very clever – these Chinese!”  Hmmm… I wonder if this is a film I heard about but never viewed… something called the Weimar Republic in which people describe rather desperate folks who brought their money to the grocery store in a wheel barrow… and the store-keeper keeps the wheel barrow… and the people carry home an exceedingly small loaf of bread to feed a very large family.  Ever see a film like that?  I think it was before my time.

So… rather than ramble for another graph or two… I’m up late again… better go to bed… and see you tomorrow  or shortly.

            Cordially… IN HIM
