DEALING IN WOOLY TRUTH -- LIKE EYE COVERING

Glad you’re here with us on a Monday…

Terrible news out of Arizona Saturday morning. Our prayers are with the wounded and their families. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was wounded by the assailant and is in critical condition as I write this on Sunday evening. By any measure it’s a horrible event – and from all the fragments of information available it’s apparently the work of a psychologically disturbed 20-something Caucasian young man who has a history discovered in the hours since the shooting of threatening actions which it appears has resulted in several fatalities including a nine year old girl, a Federal Judge and one of the “Blue Dog Democrat’s” staff members.

In addition, there are six deaths plus 13 injuries – some critical -- to all appearances inflicted by one gunman firing bullets from an automatic pistol using a 31 cartridge capacity magazine. He was disarmed and tackled as he attempted to reload another 31 cartridge unit into his weapon but was thwarted and arrested in the attempt.  Preliminary examination of various written rants and verbal threats by the young man in custody awaiting indictment as I write, would indicate there would have been others wounded or killed had he been successful with his reloading.

The Tucson, Arizona area is the hot spot -- central to the Mexico-US boarder conflagration where illegal aliens and drug smugglers make life difficult for residents. Arizona has experienced extremely rapid population growth as demonstrated by growth in the number of seats in the U.S.Congress.  As recently as 1965 the State had but two Congressmen along with its two Senators. The new census figures now give nine seats to Arizona – it moves up to #16 in population rank. It’s hard to believe – with 11 electoral collage votes.

Congress has scrubbed the legislative schedule which was on tap for the coming week.  Democrat Jim Clyburn of the Pee Dee area of South Carolina and recently installed as the “assistant minority leader” in the House in order to maintain a leadership seat for the black caucus leader, said on TV Sunday he thought Congress should forget the cutting of money spent on Congress members – which had been part of the first week’s business – and “beef up” the expenditures on security. He says he has had heightened security even before this incident because of threats and heated rhetoric.

Just as there was a ‘sorting out’ period after the 9/11 tragedy – this one coming in the middle of a reorganizing effort by Congress that is supposed to cut spending rather than increase it further – there will have to be a cooling down period as Congress recovers its equilibrium and tries to get down to the business of the Nation.  It’s not going to be an easy or smooth transition. We shall have to pray it through.

Even saying that, will make some people angry – but I’m not going to give up my trust in my Savior and God when the bullets start flying. This could well be an introduction to the attacks that will plague our society as we wander further away from the care and love of the Lord.

            Cordially, IN HIM

“JUST A MINUTE”

DEALING IN WOOLY TRUTH – LIKE EYE COVERING

Just a minute: - As I sought an opening sentence for today’s JUST A MINUTE, I found this thought originated by “Anonymous” – who gladly foregoes being identified if a goal is reached. It came to mind as I listened to the former Speaker of the House hand over the gavel to the incoming one. It goes like this.

“A real leader faces the music, even when he doesn't like the tune.”

This was followed by some ‘stubborn’ facts gathered by the Heritage Foundation: -- When now Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi was sworn in as Speaker on January 4, 2007, the national debt stood at … $8.67 trillion. . When she surrendered the gavel to Speaker Boehner … the national debt stood at $14.01 trillion. At $5.34 trillion, Speaker Pelosi has added more than $1 trillion per year in debt while she held the Speaker’s chair. … And yet she tells reporters last Tuesday (quote) ‘Deficit reduction has been a high priority for us. It is our mantra, pay-as-you-go.

Truth is trampled.
