IT'S HARD TO SEPARATE THE WHEAT FROM THE CHAFF -- For Just A Minute Radio -- Friday 101105

Wonderful to have the election behind us with all its uncertainties.

Now we have an inkling of what’s before the Nation if we are to regain our footing and go on with progressing toward a more balanced government that has the hands of reasonable people on the reins.

As the old proverb says: “Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.” There’s just no substitute for it. The minute we take our eyes off the prize somebody comes in with a ‘secret and sharp’ plan and diminishes the success of previous effort.  Our Republic bears the scars of such inattention.

To the above admonition I would simply add the Scriptures are full of instances – especially in the Old Testament – of ordained civil magistrates with a holy calling, who let  themselves become distracted by riches or adversity or something else, to the detriment of carrying out the Lord’s will.  Who are some examples?

The first one to pop into my mind is Gideon.  He was a very weak farmer… thrashing grain in a wine-press pit in order to hide his activity from those who would come and steal away the object of his productive labor. God guided him through difficult and faith- demanding steps to defeat the foes that surrounded him – by encouraging the successful exercise of his faith.

But at the end, Gideon succumbed to an attraction for gold – which became a stumbling block to a successful end to his civil ministry.

Similarly, King David stayed in Jerusalem at the time Kings normally went out to battle. That was the very time when he cast his eyes on the wife of one of his favorite General officers – and not only committed adultery, but murder, and even worse, disloyalty to those who had bestowed loyalty to him that resulted in their own death. It’s too horrible to contemplate for very long.  Yet even from this we get a glimpse of the dimension of God’s grace and willingness to reconstruct a man’s life.

Well, I could go on… but the path is clear. Inattention to the will and purpose of God in our lives often leads to sin, defeat and dishonor – paying a terrible price – and still The Lord Is merciful and forgiving.  So there’s honor and justice that comes even out of such a black hole. “Be not deceived, God is not mocked, for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” Galatians 6:7

Have a blessed weekend in the word and worship.

            Cordially, IN HIM

“JUST A MINUTE”

IT’S HARD TO SEPARATE THE WHEAT FROM THE CHAFF

Just a Minute: -- Since the President has shunned politics himself – we too declare a holiday.

Yesterday they celebrated Will Rogers Day, in Oklahoma. Will was a native comedic son and aviation enthusiast. He made people laugh with famous sayings like – “I’m no comedian, I just watch Congress and report the facts.” -- Today Oklahoma City Airport bears his name.

Also today is Sadie Hawkins Day. This was invented by Al Capp, creator of the comic strip, Li'l Abner. November 5th, unmarried ladies could literally pursue their men and when caught, marriage was unavoidable. The idea took off in 1938 when the first official "girls-ask-boys" Sadie Hawkins festival was noted.

So, those of you over fifty – as I am – should feel better. You, now have a legitimate reason to flaunt your superior knowledge. When others ask you about “Shmoos” or “Mammy Yokum” or “Marryin’ Sam” – you’ll have a host of characters by which you may display your familiarity with a part of Americana on a par with Will Rogers.

Doesn’t that brighten your day?

MR. BOHNER INSTRUCTS THE PRESIDENT -- For JUST A MINUTE RADIO -- Thursday 101104

            Good day to you all…

Glad to have you with us as we slide slowly into Fall … and we reach that time when the clocks must be set BACK an hour at 2 AM Eastern STANDARD TIME Sunday morning for the coming winter months.

We’ve passed that other marker of fall weather – the punkin’s sittin’ out on the veranda – and now we see the stores blossoming with Christmas wreaths.  I’ve also noticed people who have the ability and inclination to plant their winter pansies have been diligently at it… I’m always full of good intentions and regret my failure to act on them come next Spring… Ah well… I take comfort in the fact the trees turn into beautiful mounds of color and do their best to spruce up the yard. The professional grounds keepers come along to try and disturb their blanketing… but that won’t happen completely until the first snowfall.

Another interesting sight is our small Japanese maple cozied up to the front of the house.  Apparently a nursery grafted limbs from two different trees onto the same trunk when it was small.   All spring and summer the tree looks uniformly green – but when fall really takes hold part of the tree turns a vivid red and the other a flamboyant yellow – quite a contrast for a couple of weeks. We also have some tall holly hedges in our front yard… My wife thinks they present a rather unfriendly private attitude… but I like them with scads of red berries that are just signaling the arrival of the winter holidays.  This year I hope to make plenty of berries available in the neighborhood… but you probably know how my resolutions go.

We also have an outdoor firepit we’ve not used yet. It was presented to me last Father’s Day… and has remained so far unused on the patio where our umbrella tables are. Summer time… the mosquitoes seem to congregate back there… but I suppose we wouldn’t be troubled that way when it gets a tad cooler… although the ‘skeeters’ seem more hardy than I remember as a youth.

This year we’ve had an especially active election cycle.  As of this writing sixty seats changed parties in the lower house – House of Representatives, which being the “House of the People” must stand for election every two years.  Senators in the upper house… sometimes derisively called “The House of Winds” serve for a term of six years before having to stand for election again. That theoretically gives them more time to ‘think’ and contemplate. No one’s actually measured it. (J)… and I’m not about to try.

You’ve heard enough politics I’m sure… I think my tank is fully filled… but I’ve also heard conversations about 2012 – so I suppose it’s inevitable.

Have a great end of the week… not quite the weekend yet.

            Cordially, IN  HIM

“JUST A MINUTE”

MR. BOHNER INSTRUCTS THE PRESIDENT

Just a Minute: -- Just before returning as “Speaker Elect”, Ohio’s John Bohner –lectured President Obama: “Mr. President, there’s a word for people who have the audacity to speak up in defense of freedom, the Constitution and the values of limited government that made our country great, … We don’t call them ‘enemies.’ We call them patriots.”

That captured the Tea Party’s mood Tuesday. The GOP lost only three seats while gaining 60 – thus breaking the Democrat stranglehold on the Legislative branch.  That doesn’t mean all is well in the GOP – but it’s sure an improvement.

The President now jaunts off to India with a party of 3000, leaving his minions in DC to sooth disaffected Democrats. Included among those packing boxes, is former finance chairman from South Carolina’s 5th District, John Spratt, -- after an unbroken reign of 28 years.

The biggest GOP disappointment is “Searchlite” Harry Reid, of Nevada,  commencing another six-year cycle as Majority Leader. So, up goes the curtain on 2012.   Aren’t you thrilled?

WHAT'S IN THE OFFING NOW? -- Just A Minute Radio for Wednesday 101103

            G’day folks… Sorry… the brain apparently had a melt-down late in the day… and … I lost my shovel?

Shovel?  You were working the polls – not patching the road!

After 12 hours with the polls open… -- helping set up, trying to speed take down & clean up (for two *different* polling place the mechanics of wrapping up the electronic communications just dried up… all I can seem to put together is ‘sorry.’ I’ll have to do better next time. By Thursday perhaps, this complicated election picture will begin to emerge from the fog of battle – or maybe take longer. I saw Karl Rove and Joe Trippe (of all people) exchanging barbs and points late in the evening on FOX NEWS. It wasn’t pretty.

The best I can make of it is everybody tried – some succeeded and some failed – we’re starting a new chapter.

Right now I can’t see how the deleted long-term congressmen in the House and – not as many as had been forecast in the Senate -- are going to have a bitter, biting and divisive December.  It won’t be a joyful Christmas season this year in Mudville. But – unless the Lord wills it – neither will it signal the end of the world.

What will it be? Like I say bitterness will be the theme of the Senate and the Executive Branch located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.  But through this Tsunami-like upheaval I believe the ‘ship of state’ will be battered but survive. In the main, it can be cleansing and strengthening, as America’s trials and difficulties have been thus far, by the grace of God.

Even a casual reading of the Holy Scriptures brings us to such a conclusion. My main reference point, I suppose, is the history of our government’s monumental struggle *after* the surrender at Yorktown – when the British retreated, but certainly didn’t like their bitter medicine – but they survived AND we survived, even through the confusing days of the “Articles of Confederation” and the various hostile conflagrations that beset the first century of the newly birthed nation – the LORD brought us through.

HE never runs us through the same “movie” twice.  There are new people, new issues, new successes as well as new kinds of failures. Out of the bloody ashes of the “Un-civil” War – America emerged the strongest political, economic and technological power in the world. All by the *grace* of God.

Just within the past week, I read a fairly short article about Christianity and its’ rocky course – the theme sentence and title (as I recall was) ‘Grace Changes Everything.’  The more I think that over and run several historical and Biblical sequences through my years of experience and the grace God has given our family – the more convinced I am it is true!

So – buck up Americastrengthen the feeble knees and the hands that hang down – Please be patient, the Lord isn’t finished with us yet!

Trust in HIM all ye people.  God bless you.

OH NOBODY KNOWS THE TRUBBLE WE'S IN -- For Just A Minute Radio - Tuesday 101102

Welcome to Election Day 2010 – it shall pass this way no more! [Praise the Lord!

Finally THE day has arrived. I’m sure it will not depart quietly… we shall have remnants hanging around like … well like ‘chads in a Florida November’ wondering if they are ever going to depart. But *perhaps* something was learned ten or twelve years ago. After all we are supposed to be the most intelligent species… (if you happen to be an evolutionist – I guess).

So here we are and by eight tonight we’ll still be sitting like ‘birds in the wilderness – waiting for the word’ –

But let us pray that shortly after that the returns will roll in, the squabbling die down – and in a day or two we can settle down for a long winter’s nap – or at least a fall nap. (J)

By the time you read this your faithful correspondent will have been responding to the 5 AM alarum clock to get to the polling place to help the clerk set up the machines, arrange the crew, post the signs etc. and prepare for the opening of the poll by 7AM on the dot…

Then the day will be filled with questions… recalcitrant machines, walking back and forth to get things accomplished… pausing for a snack between customers and moving on until the conclusion at 7PM sharp… whereupon there may be standing in line until the last vote is cast… the tallys taken out of each machine, carefully and dutifully posted… phoned in to HQ… and the machines and supplies safely returned for the next go ‘round’ in a year or two.

It promises to be a LOOOOOONG day… so I’m hitting the sack to get up in less than five hours. If you come to my voting station and see me dozing… just waken me gently please. (J)

Have a great vote casting day.

“JUST A MINUTE”

OH NOBODY KNOWS THE TRUBBLE WE’S IN…

Just a Minute: -- 540 years before Christ, Belshazzar, a Chaldean ruler, threw a huge feast celebrating his supremacy. He and his court quaffed wine from golden vessels purloined from God’s Temple.  Suddenly, a disembodied hand appeared writing in Belshazzar’s banquet hall, words which no one could read.

The impounded prophet Daniel, was summoned, promised extravagant gifts for interpreting the words. He refused the rewards -- but informed the King the miraculous hand had written: “Thou art weighed in the balances and found wanting.” That very night he learned God IS supreme and puts down or lifts up whom He wills.  Darius the 62 year old Midianite slew the king and took over his kingdom.

It’s all clearly laid out today – in detail, in the Old Testament book of Daniel chapter five. You should look it up. You may readily see God still arranges the affairs of men – whom He puts up and whom He puts down  -- according to HIS will. Let this, dear friends relieve your anxiety as you put your trust in Christ the redeemer.

EVERYBODY'S LOOKING BOTH WAYS BEFORE CROSSING - Just A Minute Radio for 011101

It sure is Monday all right…and I’m sleepy.  This is going to be a busy week with long days.

So… I’m trying to wrap it up early now and get to bed – before getting up early in the morning.

I hope you’re as tired of this election as I am.  Oh yes… it’s exciting because it’s suspenseful. We all wondering if everyone else is wondering what we’re wondering about it.  And of course it’s true.

I checked a bunch of front pages to see if they had anything new – and aside from some additional scraps of gossip or last minute accusations – mud slinging and the like – I didn’t find anything earth-shaking.  And that’s hard to do because there *was* some earth shaking less than an week ago… and further tidal waves in Indonesia that killed more people.  So let’s join in prayer for them.

There was a very interesting thing I ran into during my weekend reading. An article speaking of the current state of journalism and various other things in the offing… which got into the idea of “objective” truth. Objective truth… which one might call ‘pure’ truth… i.e. that it is so obvious there is no questioning it – like… “water is wet” – well then someone comes along and ruins the discussion with the question “How do you define wet?”  Arggggh….

In any case in the development of this article this idea came out: If you say there’s no such thing as objective truth – you have to exclude what you have just said about objective truth if you’re going to have any place to argue from – otherwise you have just cut the ground out from under your statement.  Well… you can see where that is leading.

“If everything is true – then nothing is true.”  So… why am I even considering this?

I’m writing this too late at night to follow through with where this leads… but it is a very interesting line of thought to contemplate… and I’m so glad we who believe the Bible are able to stand on the testimony of God’s word to the fact that when Jesus said: “I am the way the TRUTH and the light…” He was saying something irrefutable and of great substance on which I can stand and with my Lord maintain the truth exposed and proclaimed in God’s Word.

There’s a LOT of good information for those who want to seek it out… and we’re not talking about nothing… but a foundational premise on which everything else stands or falls.  Praise the Lord – we don’t have to ‘take a vote on it… or an opinion poll.” Truth is truth because God said it – and there is no power or greater authority to say him nay… it’s as simple as that.  Thank you Lord….

And thank you for being with us today.

“JUST A MINUTE”

EVERYBODY’S LOOKING BOTH WAYS BEFORE CROSSING

Just a Minute: -- Your mother told you to look both ways before crossing the street? That’s the mood today -- both parties joined the TEA party -- with fingers crossed.

Scott Rassmussen,  about the most independent major pollster, says the numbers back last January were about the same as they are today – The GOP was up by nine points then on the generic ballot which is just about the same as today.  While local and individual races see-saw back and forth – it’s because, he thinks, the Republicans have no unified leader who emphasizes the issues of jobs, holding down taxes and cutting spending – that’s what a BIG majority of voters say they want.

So I’ll be brave, stick my neck out and say I hope that’ll happen because the incoming anti-Obama tide will be far larger than anyone’s forecast up to now. Pollsters will try to claim credit before the end of the week – and if I’m wrong, I won’t be any worse off than I am already. (J) So tomorrow just lean back and say that’s what you thought would happen.
