A DEFINITION THAT NEEDS DEFINING -- for Just A Minute Radio on Tuesday 120320

I am simply and I guess repeatedly enthralled with the *sudden* flash of color that shows up here over say a three day period.

One day it’s Jonquils and another Daffodils…. Then I had totally white ‘spears’ of Iris’s which a grandson had divided and replanted. I’m afraid I was a bit concerned that he didn’t know what he was doing… but he was willing to do it. And here in the middle of March those white Iris are popping out like pop-corn only in silence. Their beauty is simply startling even in the hands of a amateur and sometimes (as a boy) recalcitrant gardener. (That chapter comes later when you have to mark off rows of potato hills… then later tomato plants which have to be watered and re-watered out of a five gallon bucket that has to be filled at the house and carried sloppin’ over your shoes… and over an obstacle or two – like a back fence and done long enough to assure the little “babies” were taking root.

We had to cut up Irish potatoes so there was *at least* two eyes on every quarter of a potato we put in the hill… and that needed to be done – Dad said – On St. Patrick’s Day. Not too early or they’d rot … and not too late or they’d dry out not making a fruitful hill… and even planting them I’d get a twinge in my back thinking of the days they’d have to be dug – and sorted… so Mom could get some fresh little’uns  to put in stews or for a spring dinner…. Etc. et. Etc. etc.

But looking back over it it’s quite pleasant. Barb fixed a delicious corned beef (actually brisket) and cabbage and some carrots and potatoes  and ….and and… I felt ashamed at all I ate…and my blood glucose next morning was 170+  -- not good  -  but on the TASTE front – too good! (Too good to quit too early…my down fall.) We Shared it with our daughter Kyle and leftovers the next day with other grand kids…

But I’ve also concocted a mixture of cranberry/grape and not too much apple juice… cold w/ ice cubes…It’s delicious and not too sweet… if you put in too much concord grape you’ll think you’re going to fight the British at Bunker Hill.

I’m participating in a study of people with gout and arthritis. Neither one bothers me an excruciating amount… except when at about 40 I got the first taste of identifiable gout. It felt like I’d dropped a brick on my foot – but just a bit of the prescribed tablets and I was free of the pain and misery by next morning… and and… well that’s enough for today.  Enjoy the spring before the snows return. “JUST A MINUTE”

A DEFINITION THAT NEEDS DEFINING

Just a Minute: Paul Weyrich and I were both Republican press secretaries -- each for a different senator in the mid ‘60’s. From him I learned about ‘Coptic’ Christians. “Coptic” – they tell me is pronounced ‘kpt’ (cop) -- which is how Greeks in Alexandria would pronounce Greek.

I mention this because yesterday’s Wall St. Journal carried a front page picture of the Coptic Pope in Egypt -- who died Saturday. Possibly you are as uninformed about ‘coptics’ as I was before I met Paul.

Paul founded the Free America Society. He was a brave and dedicated young man who passed away in 2008. He was also instrumental in causing the Heritage Foundation to flourish as it does today -- one of the leading lights of Conservatism in Washington.

Had we not experienced the extraordinary efforts of Paul and others like him, we would have nothing like our conservative movement in America. Seeing the picture of the departed Coptic Pope, reminded me of how much people like me owe to people like Paul who have indeed given their life to the establishment of a strong voice for freedom existing today.
