THINGS HAPPEN ON THE WEEKEND -- for Just A Minute Radio - Monday 110711

Here we head into a very ‘bushy’ week in D.C.

 

I don’t mean George W. or George H.W. are coming back to 1600 Pennsylvania for a return engagement. I mean it’s going to be a week when you can’t see the forest for the trees… or the underbrush as the case may be.

 

The big fight going on – which will run right up to Labor Day and beyond, believe me… is doing what has to be done to save the ‘full faith and credit of the United States.’  I don’t profess to know what will happen if they let the nation default on its loans as has happened before.

 

Remember we had a couple of shut-downs in 1954, complicated by the political scene to the point nobody really knows what happens when the government fails in its financial operations. Let’s hope we don’t have to find out the hard way.  In any case, my take is on it is it’s really “uncharted waters”. No one has really been through one of these to the finish. And by the way – what IS the finish?  Who owns the store then?

 

So… right now the President, and Speaker John Bohner, are playing a delicate game of chicken to see who will blink first. Bohner has more experience in blinking matches than does Mr. Obama – but the power of the Presidency and the things he might do – or attempt to do, could well throw the country and it’s financial structure into the ditch. 

 

None of us were around when Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson hammered out the early stages of fiscal institutions… that’s why we have the Quasi – governmental Federal Reserve Bank… which seems to have a sort of ‘enchanted’ existence the rest of us are supposed to leave alone. Well… it could be like touching high tension wires. You may have some disastrous results no matter which side of the line you err on.

 

It’s getting late here… We can’t hash this out right now. I’ll leave it to the ‘braniacs” – they’re the ones who got us in to this mess.

“JUST A MINUTE”

THINGS HAPPEN ON THE WEEKEND

          Just a Minute: Mostly we just try to comment, not report, on news events – with Biblical viewpoint. But occasionally regular news crowds in un-invited – like the “strong” earthquake in northeast Japan. Sunday news reports gave it about a 7 on the Richter scale with very little damage and equally small tsunamis.

          What we find more upsetting is President Obama’s Chief of Staff, William Daley, who confirms we’re holding back ‘some military aid to Pakistan.  However he indicated the impression given by the New York Times story that it was 800 million was off by 500 million.

          The White House isn’t the most cooperative news source around when they’re wanting to play diplomatic chess with foreign governments and Pakistan is still smarting from not being ‘asked’ if the Navy Seals could come in and ‘capture’ Bin Laden – the unhappiness seems to be mutual.

          Well, that’s the kind of tight-rope-walking which makes getting solid information from The White House sometimes like nailing Jello to the wall.
