OK CHILDREN, TIME TO SHARPEN SOME SKILLS - Just a Minute Radio for July 17th Friday, 2009

OK FOLKS – Friday’s rolled around again…

Sometimes my wife reminds me of the ‘old’ radio days when we did almost everything ‘live’ and we abominated ‘dead air.’  She says I fill up the silent spaces ready for the network or the next record to play. In other words I hear myself talk a lot.

She just doesn’t hear the silent times when I’m thinking… but then often the group from Playfair comes calling – at least once a week… and we have to work up something to talk about we hope you’ll find interesting. Last Wednesday they began to worry that maybe they sound funny… possibly you’d like to drop them a line of reassurance. I’ll make sure they get your message and send back a reply.

What occasions today’s program is the size of the books presented to U.S. legislators, which they are supposed to consider carefully before voting them into law. I’ve forgotten the size of the stimulus bill (so called) but I recall Mr. Baynor trying to read one amendment out loud which had been dumped on everyone’s desk at about 3AM in the morning before it was to come to a vote.

President Obama during his campaign, critical of the Bush Administration said his would be an Administration with more transparency than any that has gone before… at least I think that’s what he said… sometimes I drop off… In any case. He has not kept his word. The $787 trillion stimulus bill which puts our whole nation ‘under water’ (like the sub prime mortgages) for the foreseeable future was shuffled out the evening before it was to be voted on. *Nobody* -- not a single legislator could own up to reading it all much less studying it. Some might call it a crime against humanity – at the very least it’s a crime against the unborn.

Anyway… this *can* be cured. We simply have to exercise the backbone to say enough! We won’t have it any more. This is a government Of BY and For the people. If the people want it to be different it *will* be different. If we don’t care… then we get the kind of government we deserve. Unfortunate… but so.

Well… better wrap up the lecture for this week… see you next week… Lord willing.

“JUST A MINUTE”

OK CHILDREN TIME TO SHARPEN SOME SKILLS

Just A MinuteInvestor’s Business Daily – an excellent newcomer newspaper often carries excellent well written articles… not the lovelorn or fluffy stuff… but things that can make a difference if heeded.

For instance earlier this week the headline read: “Congress needs a Read the Bill – bill.” Unless you’ve worked around legislative bodies (and they are not all the same) you’ll likely miss the difference between a Bill an Act or some other label. The *proposed* legislation presented to the body is a “bill” usually … until it gets passed… then it becomes law as an Act… at least in our Federal Congress.

Convincing our present officials to be better lawmakers seems to be nearly hopeless. But writing laws that are clear and brief can be done. It just takes effort. The Declaration of Independence is only 1,337 words. Our  Constitution, is the shortest in the world and only about 4,440 words. The first 10 amendments establishing personal liberties not easily taken away -- less than six hundred words.

Get a copy of a Just a Minute script… send it to your legislator… it’s only about 185.
