HIGH NOON AT THE SENATE CORRAL - Just A Minute Radio for Friday 07/24/09

Howdy Partners –

Time to hitch up the buckboard and take a few tools to go out fence fixin’ – of course that would have been done long after the whole “Open Range” had disappeared – and barbed wire had become the name of the game.

When you think of the mighty task that was done in connecting the east and west in America – it’s almost like one of the famous seven wonders. It only takes a little struggling with the elements to have a real appreciation for what happened on the Oregon Trail – or when the homesteaders settled the middle of the country and carved out a whole nation.

History wasn’t a favorite subject in school because somehow I wasn’t as interested in dates and places and economic statistics as I was in people. Stories told by excellent and practiced story-tellers has somewhat gone out of style. Radio – old fashioned radio -- did a lot to preserve that heritage I think – but now we have TV – Twitter – and everything digital. It’s somewhat downright discouraging.

However, this week I think has marked a turning point. Of course I find myself often guilty of ‘finding *just* what *I’m* looking for – and ignoring the rest. So I have to draw up short and take a better and wider look. But really it seems like this week… to quote that famous line from Winston Churchill… “It may not be the beginning of the end – but perhaps it is the end of the beginning.” I know I’m looking forward to how it all comes out – I trust you are too.

Cordially, IN HIM

Jack

“JUST A MINUTE”

HIGH NOON AT THE SENATE CORRAL

Just A Minute – It was high noon Wednesday at the Senate’s anti-gun corral. A bill offered by South Dakota Republican John Thune, fell only two votes shy of passing permission for licensed gun bearers to cross state lines. He says he’ll be back.

Lots of normally liberal Senators voted for the measure clarifying permission to carry a concealed, licensed, weapon in all 50 states. The NRA took aim at Democrats from pro-gun states like Arkansas, Maryland and Utah who tried to hide their votes ‘til the very last minute. It’s a powerful illustration of the second amendment’s value.

I once helped Republican Senate candidate win a contest in Maryland mainly because his Democrat opponent couldn’t keep his mouth shut about guns. Loads of Marylanders and Pennsylvanians love to hunt -- and the NRA knows how to spread the word. I’m thankful they do – it’s the power of the second amendment in preserving freedom.

Lots of liberals were hiding, flashing hand signals and suddenly absent from the Senate floor on Wednesday when anti-gun advocates were taking cover.
