OBAMA SLIPS -- A BEGINNING? -- Just A Minute Radio for Friday 07-03-09

Hippy Yi Yi Yo… at least I think that was our cowboy call back about 1939 on Sherwood Ave.

We had a great deal of fun playing cowboys and Indians… and I don’t think we ever even pretended to murder anyone with a rubber knife or cap pistol. I know when our three boys went through that stage it was wild west time on Piney Mt. at the transmitter site where we lived. And I can still remember #2 son Kim being totally in love with his straw ‘cowboy hat’ even though it looked like a bird’s nest that had endured several tornadoes.

All I’m saying is there’s a childhood time for play. Sandboxes and swings and neighborhoods with sidewalks so legitimate roller skating can be accomplished without *greatly* disturbing the neighbors and having sufficient room to get scraped knees and elbows without running the risk of getting in the street.

My wife tells me over and over of the times she enjoyed with dolls and taking care of ‘for real’ babies… that she played nursemaid to after school – apparently with the mother’s approval and I would suppose gratefulness for the help.

But right now I have the feeling our country is slipping away from those family moorings. Everyday brings news of some new tragedy. I could well wish we were back in the days of radio and newspapers as our primary news outlets. Maybe we wouldn’t be so jumpy – and nervous about many things. I saw a comedy reprise TV show on one of the lesser channels the other night, and it was good to get a glimpse of Ozzie and Harriet – and Father Knows Best… although I’ll have to remark I thought some of them were a bit corny then… they were better on radio without all the fake scenery.

It’s an imperfect world – but it’s time we all took stock of seeing what we can do to improve things. I’m not raising funds or asking for contributions. Just a candid stock taking to see what needs doing in the neighborhood. If we don’t who will?

            Cordially, IN HIM

“JUST A MINUTE”

OBAMA SLIPS – A BEGINNING?

Just A Minute – Even though tomorrow’s the Fourth, this isn’t about fireworks. This week for the first time Mr. Obama’s approval index slipped into negative territory. Quoting the Rasmussen poll: "The raw numbers are pretty straightforward — 31 percent of Americans strongly approve of the way Barack Obama is handling his job, 33 percent strongly disapprove," and added – The closeness of the approve/disapprove numbers are yet another indicator of how evenly divided our nation is." (unquote)

Don’t expect the White House to put out a press release on that. And the major news nets and papers will ignore it. But for those of us watching the horizon for a cloud “about the size of a man’s hand” possibly it’s a beginning.

I’m not wishing the President ill but I am praying for our Nation to recover for, it’s no secret a large number, maybe a majority, of Americans are nursing a serious case of ‘buyers remorse.’ Could it be in Winston Churchill’s famous words in the early days of World War Two, “It is not the beginning of the end but, the end of the beginning.”
