BLUE DOGS GROWL BUT BETRAY THEIR FOLLOWING - Just A Minute Radio for Friday July 31, 2009

            Hello again… it’s FRIDAY Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

Been a tough week out here on the electronic ranch – but we have hopes better days are coming.

Reading of Admiral Stockdale’s imprisonment in Vietnam in the book “Good to Great”, I came across what the authors called the “Stockdale Paradox” which they labeled the attitude he held that got him through that imprisonment. When he was captured by the Viet Namese he was wounded, beaten and generally abused for eight years. The same kind of treatment Senator McCain got. And what got him through mentally he said, was absolute belief that he would survive and see his wife and family again – coupled with a total realization of the brutal facts he was up against. He even beat himself with a stool and cut himself with a razor so he could not be presented on TV as being well-treated in the prison camp.

That’s kind of like holding contradictory conclusions – but the Admiral’s point to his interviewer was that the “Optimists” as he called them; those prisoners who said they’d be out by Christmas or Easter or whatever … would then lose heart when their self-imposed but unrealistic  deadline came and went. Then they would sort of shrivel up and die. He, on the other hand, maintained his absolute belief and determination he *would* survive and see his family again and kept the goal before him and would not let it go.

I think that’s what we as Christians have to hold on to in these perilous times. I’ve also been reading of the persecutions Christians are going through in the unregistered ‘house’ churches in China. Information now is there are about a million Bible believing Christians in Mainland China… while there are only about 73 million members of the Communist Party. Those people – believers – in China are having to hold tight to their real faith in spite of continuing persecution, having their Bibles and Christian literature confiscated, being wrongly imprisoned and subjected to mistreatment and even torture. What keeps them going is their absolute faith they will be ultimately delivered. My heart goes out to them – and they deserve our prayers – just as our servicemen and women who have been captured and mistreated in pursuit of their duty.

Now in America – I hear the faint echoes of our early Patriots and Founding Fathers, urging us on to preserve and protect the freedoms which have so bountifully blessed our nation. We are undoubtedly under attack and there are forces who want to destroy our land of liberty – especially our Christian liberty. Let us take example from people like Stockdale and McCain who have suffered and survived – and urge us on to protect our own land of the free and home of the brave.

            Have a great weekend.

            Cordially, IN HIM

“JUST A MINUTE”

BLUE DOGS GROWL BUT BETRAY FOLLOWING

Just A Minute – Down in El Dorado, Arkansas TEA Party leaders said they feel “betrayed” by Democrat Mike Ross’s cave-in during Thursday afternoon’s confusion on the Health Care vote. It’s causing frustration and unhappiness that promises to become widespread.

Ross’s web site said on Wednesday,  he and three other Democrat ‘Blue Dog’s’ had reached an agreement with Chairman Henry Waxman of the Energy and Commerce Committee that would ensure no vote would be held until September – but things fell apart late in the day Thursday casting a cloud over the prospective hold up and increased uncertainty. Other Democrats supporting Ross were Baron Hill of Indiana, Zach Space of Ohio and Bart Gordon of Tennessee – but late last night two of those were reported to have defected.

The Blue Dogs – are basically moderates – whose threat to the Democrats is often called more bark than bite.´ El Dorado TEA Party Chairman, John Wilson, said: “The people of Arkansas and the nation are not happy with this legislation …[we’ve] dropped leaflets made phone calls and written letters [supporting] Congressman Ross… Now, we feel betrayed.”

So do we!  <> I’m Jack Buttram

IS CAVING IN THE WIND? -- Just a Minute Radio for Wednesday July 29th, 2009

Howdy everbody…. Have we got NEWS for you today.

It’s not every day we get the opportunity to come by a breaking national story here on JUST A MINUTE. But today – according to the folks over at Playfair it’s happened. If you haven’t heard the news so far, I hope you can stick around to 11:30 or 5:15 in the afternoon to hear the excitement in the voices of the folks there.

Playfair, isn’t exactly the crossroads of the world. But the folks there enjoy thinking about themselves as representatives of – well H.L. Mencken referred to them as “The great American ‘unwashed’.” Which I think was very inappropriate of him and rather typical I’m sorry to say of a certain class of pseudo-intellectuals who spend their days looking down their very long noses. However, everybody fulfills a function – even if it’s only to be a bad example – and since Mr. Mencken has long since departed – he can’t defend himself so we’ll let the chips just lie where they fell. (J

Now I begin to be cheered by the abundance of seeming “bad” news in the Mainstream Media… primarily because I realize, like the preponderance of what the MSM has taken to be the ‘chattering class’ – “They ain’t got no idea of what’s a-goin’ on no way.”  [That quote came from a wonderful dear old black preacher who earned his living as an assistant freight conductor on the old ‘Southern’ Rwy… and did the Lord’s work particularly well on the weekends as he tended his rather large and attentive flock.]

The old saying – It’s always darkest before the dawn. – may well be true. I remember some nights camping out in the rain when the tent began to leak and the sleeping bag no longer insulated you from the cold. I felt a lot like the shipmates of St. Paul in the book of Acts about to be run aground on the Isle of Malta as they “cast four anchors out of the stern – and wished for the day.” But we should be of good cheer for Jesus says He has overcome the world – and it’s not our permanent home anyway. So just remember cheerfulness is a choice. Make it yours today!

RUNNING OUT THE STRING -- Just A Minute Radio for 07-27-09

            Hello everybody – it’s MONDAY (L) … uh oh…

Well, maybe this will be a better week. I’m sure the White House thinks so.  – Or maybe *hopes* so… for the first time the President’s batting average goes into negative territory. Some have been reminded President Carter was pretty deep into the third year of his first and only term when he hit that ‘malaise’ patch …and the killer rabbit attacked him while he was out paddling around the farm pond… but then everybody has bad days.

Mrs. Sarah Palin is no longer Governor of Alaska – officially she stepped down yesterday and gracefully handed over the reins of government to the Lt. Gov. Most political pundits seem to think she’s made a BIG error. I don’t think so. I *know* she’s done the right thing putting her family first – and believe if she continues to trust the Lord, as all the evidence I’ve seen indicates she is doing that – the whole thing will work out for the very best for everyone concerned. (If anybody lacks confidence in that – have them read the Book of Esther – and if they still are concerned, add the book of Ruth to their immediate reading list.)

In any case, I continue to hear a little historical voice repeating way back in my subconscious -- “It may not be the beginning of the end – but quite possibly it’s the end of the beginning.” And being the irrepressible (mostly) optimist I am, as a Christian I believe the Lord put Winston Churchill at the helm in Great Britain at the crucial time – and Dwight Eisenhower in charge of the Normandy Invasion at a crucial moment, so we have indications in our own lifetime that God still intervenes in the affairs of men for accomplishment of HIS purposes. ”Jesus Christ is the same today, yesterday and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8)  So – we just need to stick to our knittin’ – and prayin’.

Everybody have a great week – we’re one day nearer HIS return.

“JUST A MINUTE”

RUNNING OUT THE STRING

Just A Minute – Suddenly it’s news that President Obama appears to have misjudged the nation’s mood. His approval rating has fallen below 50 percent and we’ve never seen him defeated publically before. In one press conference he managed to lose the entire nation’s police force.

Peggy Noonan, having given George Bush the back of her hand the last couple of years, has now got Mr. Obama in the cross-hairs. Let’s see how straight she shoots. She says: “His news conference the other night was … filibustery and spinny and [he] gave … answers that seemed aimed at … running out the clock. … More seriously, he didn’t seem to be telling the truth…” Hmmm.

She defines the problem as the public mood has changed from ‘demanding change’. Other pundits say it’s a case of ‘fool me once – shame on you: fool me twice, shame on me!’

Jimmy Carter proved a majority of Americans don’t wish to be described as stricken by malaise: while even Abraham Lincoln knew you can’t fool all the people all the time.

HIGH NOON AT THE SENATE CORRAL - Just A Minute Radio for Friday 07/24/09

Howdy Partners –

Time to hitch up the buckboard and take a few tools to go out fence fixin’ – of course that would have been done long after the whole “Open Range” had disappeared – and barbed wire had become the name of the game.

When you think of the mighty task that was done in connecting the east and west in America – it’s almost like one of the famous seven wonders. It only takes a little struggling with the elements to have a real appreciation for what happened on the Oregon Trail – or when the homesteaders settled the middle of the country and carved out a whole nation.

History wasn’t a favorite subject in school because somehow I wasn’t as interested in dates and places and economic statistics as I was in people. Stories told by excellent and practiced story-tellers has somewhat gone out of style. Radio – old fashioned radio -- did a lot to preserve that heritage I think – but now we have TV – Twitter – and everything digital. It’s somewhat downright discouraging.

However, this week I think has marked a turning point. Of course I find myself often guilty of ‘finding *just* what *I’m* looking for – and ignoring the rest. So I have to draw up short and take a better and wider look. But really it seems like this week… to quote that famous line from Winston Churchill… “It may not be the beginning of the end – but perhaps it is the end of the beginning.” I know I’m looking forward to how it all comes out – I trust you are too.

“JUST A MINUTE”

HIGH NOON AT THE SENATE CORRAL

Just A Minute – It was high noon Wednesday at the Senate’s anti-gun corral. A bill offered by South Dakota Republican John Thune, fell only two votes shy of passing permission for licensed gun bearers to cross state lines. He says he’ll be back.

Lots of normally liberal Senators voted for the measure clarifying permission to carry a concealed, licensed, weapon in all 50 states. The NRA took aim at Democrats from pro-gun states like Arkansas, Maryland and Utah who tried to hide their votes ‘til the very last minute. It’s a powerful illustration of the second amendment’s value.

I once helped Republican Senate candidate win a contest in Maryland mainly because his Democrat opponent couldn’t keep his mouth shut about guns. Loads of Marylanders and Pennsylvanians love to hunt -- and the NRA knows how to spread the word. I’m thankful they do – it’s the power of the second amendment in preserving freedom.

Lots of liberals were hiding, flashing hand signals and suddenly absent from the Senate floor on Wednesday when anti-gun advocates were taking cover.

THE BLUE DOGS ARE A-GROWLIN' : Just a Minute Radio - Wednesday 7/22/09

            Hello again…

Great weather, great to have you with us again – not so great in the forecast.

President Obama seems to have commanded his troops in the House and Senate to make bricks without straw – and the rebels are to various degrees, disagreeing.

Of course, in the world of politics people don’t always want to be taken literally, or have their words read back to them – especially on TV and in front of their mentors – but it happens occasionally – more frequently if you have 30 Czars to keep track of, not to mention a passle* of Cabinet Secretaries newly infused with a sense of their own importance.

But fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your viewpoint, reality strikes and the balloons deflate and come drifting back down to where the rest of us live. That’s sort of what’s taking place now – except the deflation hasn’t hit the topmost ranks as yet. There are still ‘citizens of the world’ floating around out there who have escaped the confines of Foggy Bottom or the UN General Assembly and fly around on their own cushion of warm and puffy air. Meanwhile, it’s left up to the grunts – the working people of the world to pick up the pieces, repair the wheels of state and start things working again. One just hopes there’s no train wreck happening that can’t be repaired reasonably soon.

President Reagan said there was no limit to what could be done if people don’t care who gets the credit. The obverse of that is nothing gets done when everybody wants to take the credit – or at least not get blamed for the failures.

Jimmy Carter took almost three years to get his administration into a place of ‘gridlock’ which he dubbed ‘malaise’ – The current holder of the Oval Office has managed to achieve that kind of total tangle in record-breaking time. The Chinese representatives walked out of the last G-8 meeting on Global Warming when they were asked to pledge themselves to cleaning up the atmosphere. Now our State Department espouses the position of China and India against the people who pay their salaries and wonder why nobody much loves the striped pants set.

Well, about the most hopeful thing I can manage at this juncture is – we are at the middle of the week – in almost the exact middle of the summer and maybe we’ll turn the corner before too long. It’s long overdue.

            Cordially, IN HIM

            Jack

MICHIGAN PREACHER WINS FREE SPEECH CASE - Just A Minute for Monday 7/20/-09

Hello there… it sure is Monday!

Our family had to do a lot of travel last week because of a death in the family – and will likely have to do more before too long to clear up estate matters. I hope things worked out OK here. My daughter had a workable laptop – but we were in no-man’s-electronic land for a good bit of time and not too much to be done about that. And we were too busy to keep up with much that was happening in the news except for the questioning of the New Supreme Court nominee. I think we got about all the news we could absorb there.

My outlook on current economics – and politics – are so ‘mashed together’ these days swings back and forth. Of course I know the Lord is in charge – and I try to remind myself of that every morning. So – down deep I’m not personally worried or urgently disturbed. But on an immediate level, bombarded by news reports and prices bouncing around – one cannot escape the grind and crunch of everyday happenings.

All the same – to be reminded of the fragility of life by a death in the family, and others on the national stage, such as Walter Cronkite, is to be brought up short as we are *forced* to realize that life is indeed like a vapor that appears for a while and then vanishes away. Still – there are certain things I’m comforted to realize are steady and eternal [one need only to read Romans Chapter 10:9 & 10 – to realize that] and depending I suppose on just how deeply rooted your faith is, it becomes a matter that is either broadly comforting – or sharply concerning.

Yesterday, while recovering from a bout with nausea and physical weakness, I listened to a radio sermon preached by Dr. Warren Wiersby on the book of Esther, and although those ten chapters don’t actually mention God, or the Lord, it is a story in which His hand is steady, not in a hurry, but inexorable in accomplishing His purpose. I thought for some time – even as I’m writing this – of the comfort and certainty the Bible and the study of it brings.

I also read the jeering and sneering at the subject of today’s program, and I think my faith grows stronger as we are subjected to these attacks and contests. My prayer, even for our most irascible enemies of the Faith, is they will come to know the goodness and grace of God. It happened to people like John Newton – and it can happen in their cases too.

See you tomorrow – right here on the radio.

            Cordially, IN HIM

“JUST A MINUTE”

A MICHIGAN PREACHER WINS FREE SPEECH CASE

Just A Minute – A Michigan Minister has just won his free-speech case from a Michigan Appeals court – you may have missed it. It ran in USA Today. He had been released from prison in December when he appealed after having served six months. He had warned Berrien County Judge Alfred Butzbaugh, of possible punishment by God unless he repented. The appeals court unanimously overturned the case of Rev. Edward Pinkney, last Tuesday.

The appeals court said the, black Benton Harbor minister, violated his probation by writing a newspaper article critical of the Judge, calling him a racist and corrupt. The court says the free-speech rights of people serving probation can be restricted, but in this case the ban went too far.

An earlier probation of Mr. Pinkney's was revoked a year ago when he wrote a newspaper article blasting the Judge and warning of punishment by God.

This was not the preacher’s first run-in with Judge Butzbaugh, in 2007, he was convicted of paying people to vote in an election; Butzbaugh was also the judge in that case.

OK CHILDREN, TIME TO SHARPEN SOME SKILLS - Just a Minute Radio for July 17th Friday, 2009

OK FOLKS – Friday’s rolled around again…

Sometimes my wife reminds me of the ‘old’ radio days when we did almost everything ‘live’ and we abominated ‘dead air.’  She says I fill up the silent spaces ready for the network or the next record to play. In other words I hear myself talk a lot.

She just doesn’t hear the silent times when I’m thinking… but then often the group from Playfair comes calling – at least once a week… and we have to work up something to talk about we hope you’ll find interesting. Last Wednesday they began to worry that maybe they sound funny… possibly you’d like to drop them a line of reassurance. I’ll make sure they get your message and send back a reply.

What occasions today’s program is the size of the books presented to U.S. legislators, which they are supposed to consider carefully before voting them into law. I’ve forgotten the size of the stimulus bill (so called) but I recall Mr. Baynor trying to read one amendment out loud which had been dumped on everyone’s desk at about 3AM in the morning before it was to come to a vote.

President Obama during his campaign, critical of the Bush Administration said his would be an Administration with more transparency than any that has gone before… at least I think that’s what he said… sometimes I drop off… In any case. He has not kept his word. The $787 trillion stimulus bill which puts our whole nation ‘under water’ (like the sub prime mortgages) for the foreseeable future was shuffled out the evening before it was to be voted on. *Nobody* -- not a single legislator could own up to reading it all much less studying it. Some might call it a crime against humanity – at the very least it’s a crime against the unborn.

Anyway… this *can* be cured. We simply have to exercise the backbone to say enough! We won’t have it any more. This is a government Of BY and For the people. If the people want it to be different it *will* be different. If we don’t care… then we get the kind of government we deserve. Unfortunate… but so.

Well… better wrap up the lecture for this week… see you next week… Lord willing.

“JUST A MINUTE”

OK CHILDREN TIME TO SHARPEN SOME SKILLS

Just A MinuteInvestor’s Business Daily – an excellent newcomer newspaper often carries excellent well written articles… not the lovelorn or fluffy stuff… but things that can make a difference if heeded.

For instance earlier this week the headline read: “Congress needs a Read the Bill – bill.” Unless you’ve worked around legislative bodies (and they are not all the same) you’ll likely miss the difference between a Bill an Act or some other label. The *proposed* legislation presented to the body is a “bill” usually … until it gets passed… then it becomes law as an Act… at least in our Federal Congress.

Convincing our present officials to be better lawmakers seems to be nearly hopeless. But writing laws that are clear and brief can be done. It just takes effort. The Declaration of Independence is only 1,337 words. Our  Constitution, is the shortest in the world and only about 4,440 words. The first 10 amendments establishing personal liberties not easily taken away -- less than six hundred words.

Get a copy of a Just a Minute script… send it to your legislator… it’s only about 185.

AND THE WINNER IS ... ENVELOPE PLEASE... -- Just a Minute Radio for Wednesday 7/25/09

Howdy – rite here in the middle of the week …

I was just reading an article on the differences between debit and credit cards. We’ve recently tried seriously to get rid of what I call ‘hanging debt’ – stuff that just slows you down and builds up till it’s like you’re walking in a sea of chewing gum.

When we lived in a different city where we had to get into a house that was in a real estate market *much* higher than the one from which we’d moved – we were not only fortunate – but I think the Lord lead us to a seller/lender who *wanted* someone to buy their house with a second mortgage rather than a lump sum – and believe me in those days with all the pressures of five children in school and working hard to make ends meet… there were few ‘lump’ sums except when we had to spend more $$$ than we wished … for kids shoes and clothes and the like.

I’m not complaining… we learned a lot – and particularly I learned a lot about having to ‘doodle’ my money around as my Mother used to say.  So… not wanting to, nonetheless I had to carry some credit card balances for things like taxes and oil tank fill ups and stuff like that which used to be painful… and because I was NOT as good a money manager as was required… well.  Thank the Lord those days are over.

But there have been other times when we just weren’t paying attention and carried over balances or messed up a 0% card program by missing a payment deadline… that I could get uncomfortable with. All that to say, there are some of us for whom managing money well doesn’t come naturally… and we pay the price.

May I suggest… just like spelling, in the days before spell checkers, you can improve. I’ve proved it… I hope you have success in overcoming obstacles like that. It’s just discipline… and the Lord will help you, if you buckle down and pay attention to HIM and let HIM help you!

God bless you in these troubled times.

            Cordially, IN HIM

            Jack and Barbara
