WE NEED AN EDUCATION PREZ WHO DOES WHAT HE PROMISES -- Just A Minute Radio for Tuesday 101019

Good Day Folks – Very glad to have you here to examine some of the mal administration that began nearly two years ago *before* the Obama Administration had even gotten settled.

It seems the people who are desirous of having smaller (less wasteful) government for our country can make a compelling case with very little difficulty. Presently we’re having the agitation about no cost of living increase for Social Security recipients – and it’s come to light the cost-of-living ‘experts’ in the Administration have several yardsticks by which they measure the changes of that important number.

The bureaucrats formerly use a ‘basket’ of goods and services and as commodities etc. increased or decreased they made adjustments. More recently they have, under the present Administration, made changes in what’s in the basket. For instance if the price of steak goes up, they substitute a lower priced piece of meat.  And other similar adjustments are made to keep the basket ‘stable.’ The problem is, of course, it’s like measuring a yard of cloth but using different yardsticks in different years. This is what we pay our well- pensioned bureaucrats to do with our well-earned tax dollars paid into Social Security.  [Just remember – there is no such thing as government money – it ALL comes from tax payers!]

And today we have a case of Government handing out money to subsidize some of the children in DC schools.  Only because thing got tight *after* having awarded the subsidies in the form of scholarships… in 2008 …. Before the ‘citizen of the world’ was taking over the Oval Office – The Department of Education decided to take back the scholarships of the 216 low-income families to which they had already been awarded. – Shades of Scrooge!

Ah well… it is but one more indication of how very often government botches even good intentions. The closer we keep money at home… the more efficiently and effectively it can be used.

“JUST A MINUTE”

WE NEED AN EDUCATION PREZ WHO DOES WHAT HE PROMISES

Just a Minute: -- There’s a new documentary film out called “Waiting for Superman.” Reportedly, it deals with the mess we have in ‘school choice’ in America. I’ve not seen the film only read reviews – but also this from the Heritage Foundation in Washington who has tried to call attention to this extreme shortcoming.

“In the fall of 2008, 216 new low-income students were notified by the Department of Education they had been selected to receive scholarships. These kids had their winning lottery tickets in hand. …  President Barack Obama was elected with the help from NEA and AFT [teacher unions]… At the behest of Obama’s union allies, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan sent letters to the 216 families informing them he was taking back the $7,500 in scholarship money that the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship program had previously awarded them. In other words, President Barack Obama tore up their winning lottery tickets.”-- Heritage Foundation

This is exactly the kind of government causing the mounting ‘tidal wave’ of opposition to the Obama Administration.  It comes as no surprise.

SC FIFTH DISTRICT DEBATE DRAWS INTEREST -- Just a Minute radio for Monday 101018

Great weekend I hope!  We’re all ready… and the Gremlin Gotcha’s are back…. (L)… but we’re good humored about it because it’s Halloween Month… and we just have to grin and groan.

The most interesting turn of events over the weekend for me is the increasing interest shown in South Carolina’s Fifth Congressional District. That’s the one Mr. John Spratt has held in the palm of his hand since 1982… 28 years the people of Cherokee, Newberry and other assorted counties have split their tickets 14 times sending Mr. S back to the Capitol. He is a former Banker… good with the books… and has thus attained the post of House Banking Committee Chairman.  Therefore he’s been in the middle of Speaker Pelosi’s water-carrying for President Obama’s recovery-stimulus-disaster package… And before long the bills are coming due.

Folks out in the hinterlands between the coasts -- i.e. those of us in ‘flyover’ country according to Hollywood economics – are going to be digging ourselves out of the hole Mr. Obama and his crew have been excavating for almost two years now.
They haven’t reached China yet… but the chimes are ringing.

Mr. Obama has been to Ohio so many times trying to swing the bell-weather state into his column there is a special three-lane air corridor being blocked off for Air Force One… and the pollsters say it’s too close to call.  So we won’t sully our unbroken record of being pretty poor predictors (the PPP club) by sticking our necks out yet again – but when the Democrat rain clouds get this black… well… reach for your umbrellas and ponchos because come November it looks like the tear ducts are going to be filled to overflowing.

Oops… that one (a prediction) just got away.  What I fear is we’re going to have an even bigger pity party than when RR took over the WH from JC… So it may be back to peanut farming time in Georgia – except there’s at least two more years after November unless something drastic happens – not that I’m predicting it.

Anyway… it’s Monday – and promising to be an eventful week. And I’ve got to put this news note to bed.

            See you tomorrow… (DV)

“JUST A MINUTE”

SC FIFTH DISTRICT DEBATE

Just a Minute: -- Ten days ago we visited South Carolina’s 5th District, and took note of the unexpectedly close nature of what had been considered a ‘Pelosi Safe’ district.

Representative Mick Mulvaney, State Legislator, is running to replace 14 term Congressman John Spratt, a former banker, whom Mulvaney said he’d formerly admired.  The race has now turned competitive since Mr. Mulvaney’s concention on Mr. Spratt’s 98 percent Pelosi-consistent record. The plummeting poll numbers caused the Democrats to assign a top level White House campaign expert to shore up the Spratt campaign. It also alerted the New York Times to cover this race, since the 5th district has sent Mr. Spratt back to DC for the last 28 years. Because Mr. Spratt is Chairman of the House’s Budget Committee, he’s in the same politically heavyweight class as New York’s Rep. Charlie Rangle, another member of the Pelosi cadre.

No doubt a Spratt downfall could be a certain indicator of the GOP/Tea Party’s “Tidal Wave” strength so widely forecast.

THE WRONG ONES ARE WALKING THE PLANK -- Just a Minute Radio for Friday 101015

            Hello Again… it’s FRIDAAAAAAAYaaaah!

And we had a victory Thursday night in Chile at the mines… what a great ending to a strongly emotional event.

And now we plunge back into the icy waters of the pre-election cold-shower contest. See who can dampen the other camp’s spirits the most. Long since has the sense of good sportsmanship departed the scene. [ Perhaps it got started when one legislator beat another into senselessness and hospital on the floor of the Senate years ago… he happened to be a South Carolinian. ] But we’ll let that pass – moaning about it only makes things worse.

Makes me even more look longingly at the British who limit their campaigning to about a month before the election. Judging by this election season which seems to have been on the move since November of 2008, we could sure use some relief. I guess we’ll have a long time to think over our sins of omission and commission as we dig ourselves out of the hole the President and his minions have helped us all dig. Please hand me that ladder… I’m gonna climb for a while!

Anyway… what’s really costing irreplaceable treasure is the terrible loss of learning among our young people. It’s more than a monetary loss or even one of opportunity – for money and ‘make good’ opportunities can be recovered at least in some fashion. But the experience of growing up… of *finally* figuring out how long-division works (rather than getting Dad to do it on his calculator… or my calculator-computer-phone-TV-iPod set.) Those kinds of joys can never be recovered entirely.

But perhaps we do not know the joys awaiting us in several places… I know that even though I still enjoy visiting a good library… and we have one just a few blocks away … even more do enjoy being able to do at least some rough research with my computer in my home office.  I can get some of the bigger pieces of research rock out of the way… when you’re sitting down to write something to a friend… even if you don’t yet know who the friend is – that is a joy in itself.

All that to say the losses that really distress me the most are not the $$$ I may not have made, or even the places I may not have seen --- over time those things can be sampled or perhaps we find out it wasn’t so attractive after all… (about 90 % of H’wood stories.) I’m just feeling sorry for the kids to miss out on learning… on discovering – finding out what a joy it is to find out for something on your own. No need to get ‘puffed up’ about it… just enjoy the moment and pass it along to someone who isn’t so far along yet.

Have a great weekend… looking unto the Lord Jesus – “The Author and Finisher of our Faith … who for the JOY that was set before Him… e…. “  How about looking that up and finding out how it ends yourself?

“JUST A MINUTE”

THE WRONG ONES ARE WALKING THE PLANK

Just a Minute: -- Michelle Rhee, Chancellor of the District of Columbia Public Schools stepped down Wednesday avoiding replacement by the American Federation of Teachers. They will demand their choice of Chancellor, and will thus stifle the reform actions begun by Ms Rhee.

Charter schools in the District have been under attack from the AFT for fear their stranglehold on the schools will be broken. The evidence is the thousands of young black scholars who wanted to attend the improving schools, but were sidetracked by leverage meaning, holding back excellent teachers in favor of poorer performing ones.

Parents of the children, in Washington as well as Chicago and other major cities, can’t seem to put two and two together and discern -- it is education union bosses who leverage their control to get rid of reformers like Ms Rhee, and the improvements she had commenced.  A similar stew is brewing in Chicago.

School parents have only themselves to blame for failure to see their schools improving and their children learning.

OUR OF DIFFICULTY COMES A HARVEST OF PRIDE - Just a Minute Radio for Thursday 101013

            Howdy Again…

Wasn’t that progress and rescue wonderful down in the lower part of Chile!

It wasn’t only that the ‘stringbean’ part of Chile, which runs up and down the western slopes of the Andes Mountains and where 33 miners were trapped in a mine where a cave-in and landslide would have sealed the fate of 33 miners and doomed them to a hidden grave – but they were about 2500-2300 feet below the surface… and while they were safe enough from the collapse of the tunnel – there was no way out and no communication.

For 17 days they existed in a ‘safe’ shelter built for the purpose of a refuge from a cave-in… what hadn’t been foreseen was the collapse of the long winding major access to the mine… and nobody knew exactly where they were. Through drilling smaller holes in from the surface, the mine management figured out where they were… and began to send them more food (there were some stocks in the refuge room) and other necessary supplies … so they existed with a ration of a couple of spoons of canned fish and half a teaspoon of milk each, until they were able to get additional supplies from the surface.

By now you know it was forecast that conventional drilling would take them from April till Christmas to drill a passage big enough to use as an escape. But a small company in Berlin, Pa. offered a specially designed ‘hammer drill’ operated by air that could make a hole  28 inches across through solid rock – and do it much faster than conventional drilling methods.

Space doesn’t permit the exposition of all the things brought to bear on saving the lives of those 33 men. Just the being below ground that long… and all the attendant psychological as well as physical hazards were daunting – but the resourceful miners utilized those who were leaders and specialists in their midst and according to the accounts we have received so far, managed to do well – even to slim down enough to fit inside the escape modules specially built to transport them out of the underground cavern.

The important thing – from my viewpoint – was/is they determined to do the best they could with what they had – and the Lord lead the outside crew to drill in the right places to find them… and put them in contact with resources like the Company in Berlin, Pennsylvania … and NASA, who have done a lot of work in keeping people healthy in confined places like spacecraft… and it all resulted in every one of the  men getting out … I think the oldest was in his 60’s and the youngest in his 20’s … So the Lord was gracious to grant the fulfillment of their needs. I hope that is the message that comes through.

It’s also nice to just drop the political stuff for a while and rejoice with Chile that their miners are safe above ground.

            Cordially IN HIM,

            Jack

“JUST A MINUTE”

OUT OF DIFFICULTY COMES A HARVEST OF PRIDE

Just a Minute: -- For 70 days we’ve observed the effort to rescue 33 Chilean miners trapped 2500 feet in the earth. Last night finally they all came out through a hole made by a bit manufactured in Berlin, Pennsylvania.  That equipment supplied and operated by concerned Americans cut about two months off the original estimate of bringing out those men. It made Chile proud and America.

There will be many editorials about the persistence, organization and even heroism of all those involved in the rescue. What stands out most to me, is the forethought, planning and prayer that went into the combined effort. The Lord blessed their cooperation and gave them life for another day. I am glad there was victory, friendship and rejoicing in the rescue.

The world watched as the rescue supplanted the conflicts, bickering and blaming that have been going on here in America. It reminds me God is still in control. He brings triumph out of tragedy when we put our trust in HIM. Let us rejoice along with Chile and the rest of the world.

THINGS SLOW DOWN - THEN THEY HEAT UP -- Just A Minute Radio for Wednesday 101013

Welcome to the middle of a busy week…

You’d think with Congress out of town – and with Obama on the ‘look my way’ path – having gone to Ohio about as many times as he, or they can stand it; things would sort of settle down to a dull, background roar.  But not according to the news and the Internet and the cable channels and the Chile miner’s rescue and, and , and…

November 2nd can’t come quick enough in my book. But, it’s the political season… and like football, basketball or even baseball (which is by far the slowest, most laid-back sport -- but has its moments) there’s a certain urge that the sports fans have to answer and there’s no staunching the flow of cheering for the “home” team no matter where you are or what you’re doing.

So… we who don’t have polls running in our arterial avenues, nor breathe the air of backroom deals, agreements or feuds, we’re a bit mystified by it all. But you only have to look at the way football (and all the other sports) fans open their wallets to realize how far ‘over the cliff’ they’ve gone… and there’s little hope of rescue.

I admit to being attracted to certain activities, like aviation, or ham radio, or girls (back in high school days) but I, after a while pried loose the grip – at least in *most* cases.  But each person is different… and that coupled with the scriptural knowledge that God deals in HIS own ways with HIS people… and each case (person, family or association) is its own entity.  So… while I have every intention of cleaning up my office where it is more useful… I don’t get to it. The same is true for my tools… my work bench… it seems the list is never ending.

So, when the leaves start dropping and the political winds have blown now for nine months or so in this particular cycle, I guess it’s like the old stories of the fire house horses who never loose their reaction to hearing the firehouse alarm bell ring, signaling the call to duty – at least in our nobler moments we think of it as duty. Certainly politics *should* be thought of as public service. But there are areas in which…. And I’d better leave off the rest of the catalog… or it would go on forever.

In any case… for the Christian – it’s a time for study and meditation… which is often lost in the excitement of campaign. And we’ll only keep our eye on the prize of the upward call in Christ Jesus, if we engaged in a determined manner, and faithfully execute

the course which requires discipline… and dedication and renewal of a close walk with the Holy Spirit.  All of that is mostly foreign language in political circles; seldom thought of and even more seldom followed. I’m afraid I speak from experience.

Lord Acton’s pronouncement is not scripture – but it is nonetheless true: “Power corrupts – and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”  I don’t know of a single person involved in public service, who if he/she is honest would not look over the life that is passing and affirm the accuracy of Lord Action’s observation.

Perhaps it will recur on your radar screen as it does mine… and sometime we can have a mature discussion of the inevitability of it’s effects.

            Cordially, IN HIM

SEEMS LIKE EVERYTHING'S SPINNING OUT OF CONTROL - Just A Minute Radio for Tuesday 101012

The old sun ball seems a bit sleepy climbing out of bed right about 7:30AM local time ---

But the frantic rate at which the candidates are chasing over the map – and the President is playing golf as if there would certainly be a shortage of balls next season. It just seems the Nation has run out of patience and we are stumbling over ourselves to get to November Second.

Well… bring it on… We’re ready to have something GOOD happen. Today is a special election day in South Carolina where among electing people we’re also voting on changing the State Constitution. When you’re voting you’ll want to pay particular attention to those questions… and it would be a good idea to go over the text of the four things being considered.  One that’s fairly easy to understand is what’s called the Card Check… a matter concerning organizing unions in South Carolina… that’s been around a long time.

We don’t have the room to go through all the questions right here… but you’ll want to arm yourself ahead of time. Take your time and exercise your right to vote!

Well… lots to be done… we’ll be checking in with the folks at Playfair tomorrow… be sure and be here for that Miz Pearl, Homer and our old friend Billy-Bob… you’ll want to be around every week day for JUST A MINUTE.

“JUST A MINUTE”

SEEMS LIKE EVERYING’S SPINNING OUT OF CONTROL

Just a Minute: -- We’re out of sorts right now trying to make sense out of current happenings. For instance the President has spent time doing 36 fundraisers and played 56 rounds of golf – according to people who keep count of these things –yet seems ever more angry with every speech he makes.

By the way, in one story we checked out in current newspapers who rate the most powerful women in Washington – we find Mrs. Obama has leap-frogged the competition – even “her pal” Oprah – and now stands at the head of the line… One of the noted differences between Michelle and Barack is SHE doesn’t use a teleprompter.

Trying to score this Administration is difficult…. There’s not a sign of a budget – not a single appropriations bill (providing the money to run the departments) has been passed. And economists say billions of investment dollars are sidelined because of the overarching uncertainty due to Congress leaving town without anyone being able to say what the tax rates will be next year.

Everything seems to be spinning out of control.

WHAT'S THE BIG HURRY TO GET OUT OF TOWN? - Just A Minute Radio - Monday 101011

Here we are at the beginning of a week – headed down the slide straight to the end of this electoral cycle – 23 days to go it seems like we’ve been on this street for a long time… but there are 23 more sunrises to go through. So – let’s get started.

The White House last Friday – while the Prez was out of town stirring up the troops – announced that he would be leaving Washington on November 4th for a four country tour in Asia. Turns out the schedule was moved up two days – according to news sources in India – to get the President into Mumbai so he could take part in honoring those who died about a year ago in a terrorist attack then.

John Fund – who is editor of Opinion Journal -- the Dow Jones electronic effort aside from its newspaper – said it took the Washington press corps by surprise. And generally it was being put down as a ‘get out of town’ maneuver to avoid the  embarrassment of having to take phone calls from defeated Democrats asking: “What happened?”  The speculation is there will be a clamor for statements and interviews from the President, the Vice President and campaign consultants as well as those who have been calling the shots from the White House during this mid-term.

From all the polling --  more of it this year than ever before – it appears the usual mid-term election losses the winning candiate’s party takes as the first election cycle after a major victory takes place may increase by exponential factors. Some predict  as many as 100 House Seats could change hands – which happened in President Coolidge’s election. Plus there are significant bets that even the Senate could change hands as it did in 1994.

Therefore it would seem since the size of the tidal-wave of change that *could* come ashore this fall -- it isn’t the wisest choice to make that looks like he’s “hiding out” overseas as the chickens come home.  This President does not easily suffer major changes in “his” vision of how things *ought* to happen.  Going out of the country for ten days in the wake of a major, or even a strong upset, doesn’t impress me as a stroke of genius.

In fact, given the current dent’s in the President’s current suit of armor and looking at a difficult ‘lame-duck’ session just ahead loaded with in the way of ‘emergency’ or ‘disaster avoiding’ legislation that *should* be of concern – it would seem the President’s whiz kids are thinking they can “thumb their nose” toward public opinion. Not a healthy sign.

Well, there are still a lot of ‘tales to be told’ between now and Nov. 2nd – let’s get buckled in.

“JUST A MINUTE”

WHAT’S THE BIG HURRY TO GET OUT OF TOWN?

Just a Minute: -- Friday the White House released an announcement the President will leave Washington two days early on an Asian tour November 4th --  Which will be right after voters have rendered a decision, a reaction to his first two years in office.  He will return November 14th.

News sources in India say the President originally planned to leave Washington two days later but the trip was moved up so he can be in Mumbai to pay homage to those who died in last year’s terrorist attack.

John Fund, lead writer for the Dow Jones Opinion Journal, wrote: “The American people will have rendered a key judgment on his presidency in America’s mid-term elections.”  Fund speculated on the reason given by the White House: “No doubt that's true, but it will also mean the president will be outside the country and all the more able to avoid painful phone conversations with defeated Democrats or answer questions about his role in the party's losses and the prospects for his post-election agenda in what's likely to be a more Republican Congress.”

REP. SPRATT IN A 5TH DISTRICT HOT TUB -- Just A Minute Radio -- BLogspot -- 101008

Welcome to the discussion on a Friday…. (I think I said that in error yesterday…0h well…)

There’s a big BLOG named POLITICO which did a story this week about the trouble Rep. John Spratt of the SC 5th Congressional District is in *because* it has been noted in that BLOG John Spratt has voted with Madam Nancy Pelosi – otherwise known as the Queen of San Francisco… Oh yes and Speaker of the House of Representatives – The first female to attain that privilege. Anyway Mr. Spratt has been so loyal as to vote something like 98% of the time with Mrs. Pelosi.

POLITICO sent a correspondent over to the 5th Congressional in SC… to see for himself/herself.  And indeed they did find that although Mr. Spratt has been voted into office 14 times, he may be in trouble this time because of the Tidal Wave effect – of which nobody knows *just* what IS going to happen… but they’re all worried. They all look back at 1994 and wonder will it be bad or worse.

From the write up given on POLITICO – although sympathetic – it appears he, like others possibly stands on the brink.

It looks to me somewhat like what happens when a pitcher in the big leagues is on the verge of pitching a no-hit game.  Nobody is willing to even mention it lest it jinx the progress of things.  Mr. Spratt is at present chairman of the Budget Committee in the House I believe. Obviously he takes his orders from “Madam Speaker.”  But equally obviously … she’s possibly riding for a fall too!

So everybody is walking around trying not to step on the eggshells. Even Barney Frank seems to be worried. Nobody actually knows how high this Tidal Sweep will go… you could be way under or over on your estimate… either one makes you look like you’re not in the “KNOW”!

Anyway… it’s late – and I have nothing of substance to contribute… except I will think on it over the weekend.  Why don’t you do the same and drop me a line at n4zhk@arrl.net... And that way it will get to me and not be hijacked by  Gremlins or kremlins along the way. (J)

            See you Monday… Lord willing!

REP. SPRATT IN A 5TH DISTRICT PELOSI HOT TUB

Just a Minute: -- John Spratt, has been South Carolina’s 5th District Democrat since 1982 despite Republican efforts to unseat him. It’s a largely rural area including Gaffney, Darlington and the Peachoid.

But the popular blog named Politico assesses his contest this year as the most difficult so far, and apparently Mr. Spratt agrees. In a tour of the District a former Democratic State Senator Jim Lander, laid part of the problem at the feet of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi whose ‘attack ads’, he says, have made the race “loud and negative.”  But Lander believes Spratt will survive because 5th District voters have split the ticket 14 times.

But in Newberry, a Republican who talked briefly with Spratt, was a truck driver – construction worker, working two jobs, who listened politely to Spratt’s explanation of stimulus dollars trickling down. But after Spratt had moved said while he’s a Republican who’s previously voted for Spratt, this will be the first time he’s voted against him this  November remarked: “He seems to have changed,” he said … “Plus, I can’t stand Obama or that [blankety-blank] Pelosi.”

UNREPENTANT TERRORIST GETS LIFE SENTENCE -- Just a Minute Radio for Thursday 101007

Hello again it’s Thursday… the NEW MOON appears this evening… if it’s clear enough to see.

And all the dust that’s being stirred up in the political world is getting everybody dizzy.  Tuesday we had the big scene in New York courtroom with the Times Square bomber making all the headlines… He had a 10-15 minute rant in front of the Judge – who cut him off somewhat… but still sentenced him to SIX consecutive life terms without parole. That demonstrates I suppose what happens when we discard the penalties the Lord has provided for taking another person’s life.

There have been some pretty horrific things… TV Spots come from Britain… a “loving mother” saying it’s not only right but dutiful and loving to smother a baby in pain… another picture of an elementary teacher *blowing to smithereens* two students who did not agree with her conclusions about global warming…  They retreated from that one originally saying it was a joke… what a horrible joke… then… well… it’s a tangled skein unworthy of being repeated.

In any case I’m seeing us approaching a sea-change time in this old world.  I’m not a prophet or a son of a prophet…. But the Lord does say things will get worse toward the end… and they are – speaking from a humane and humanity standpoint definitely getting worse.  That’s the BAD news… the GOOD NEWS is we don’t have to go there. We can commit ourselves to the Lord and HIS care.

Even the agnostics and atheists at least in the western world and I think in most of the world possibly – have the idea behind the 23rd Psalm … I’m sure the service men and women do.  We’ve given away thousands of New Testaments and Psalms that have the good news and how to find it in the Bible for yourself…

I get a bit put out with people who are so quick to pick up the term ‘Bible Thumpers’ – it has an attraction for them. I’ve even heard politicos say Job is their favorite New Testament book to prove how much they know about the Bible. (J) – Well they prove it all right… little do they know how well

But we must still be compassionate… for *they* are not the enemy… it’s the one who is the great deceiver who is the enemy of all, all mankind… and there’s no way to keep from stumbling over the great cornerstone… the one who says “Come unto me all you who are weak and burdened down… and I will give you rest….”  It’s there folks… we just need to winsomely share it with those in need.  Think about those in need of the good news when you tend to get exasperated.  The Lord will help you – I know HE does me.

Got to close now. Pick up your Bible … ask the Lord to direct your reading … HE will!

            Cordially, IN HIM

“JUST A MINUTE”

UNREPENTANT TERRORIST GETS LIFE SENTENCE

Just a Minute: -- In a New York Federal court room Tuesday, Faisal Shazhad, plead guilty to ten counts of terror leading to six consecutive life sentences without parole.  He’s a naturalized Pakistani-American. The FBI says he built a mobile weapon of mass destruction. The 31 year old intended his bomb would kill large numbers in Times Square, and even planned a second attack.

His plot failed because Shahzad lacked bomb-making experience. His incendiary device fizzled. But it was packed with nails slated to kill or maim as many New Yorkers as possible. He was calm and seemed eager to plead guilty.

Asked had he not pledged allegiance to the United States, he told the Judge yes, but he didn’t mean it. The plot failed on a busy Saturday night last May when Times Square street vendors saw smoke coming from an SUV.

Faisal expressed his fervent desire for other Muslims to rise up and commit violence against Americans: (quote) "Brace yourselves, because the war with Muslims has just begun,” he said.
