THE DEPTH OF DEBT -- Just A Minute radio for Monday 03-23-09

            Howdy for another week…

We’re set to roll again for another round of JUST A MINUTE expose’s of what’s happening on the Treasury and White House door steps. I heard one commentator over the weekend say it was more than tragic – it’s incompetent for the Secretary of the Treasury to be unable to fill the ranks of his staff to get the job done that needs to be done.

Well – I for one have wondered for a long time if we couldn’t do without quite the number of bureaucrats we seem to have… and like termites they swarm and multiply every year… unless they are exterminated… and it looks as if Senator Grassley from Iowa has collected quite a number of brickbats for suggesting there should be a number of suicides amongst those who were supposed to be watching the henhouse while the foxes stole the chickens.

But – today’s program may throw a little more light on the subject. I dug the relevant statistics out of a report that originated in Red China… sorry … I know that’s not the politically correct name… but it looks nice on a yellow table cloth. Anyway… I think you’ll hear Mr. Wen speaking truth to power if you tune in or read today’s JUST A MINUTE.

BTW – We’ve tried to establish a new discussion group on our sister blog – Just a Minute – on Facebook.  You certainly know the drill better than I… google JUST A MINUTE RADIO and you’ll certainly run across it… or try Jack Buttram… and eventually you can wend your way through that weed filled patch too.

Anyway… I look forward to exchanging information and opinions with you from time to time as the opportunity arises. Now that Spring is here… perhaps this would take your mind off the economy.

            Cordially, IN HIM

“JUST A MINUTE”

THE DEPTH OF DEBT

JUST A MINUTE – No bureaucrat seems able to explain to simpletons like me, just how bad a financial fix we’re in. But here’s a, Mr. Wen, from the Red China government saying he’s a “little worried” about the quality of the United States debt.  Now maybe we’re getting a more accurate financial picture out of Beijing than Washington.

Mr. Wen, is really saying even the U.S. national balance sheet has its limits. The dollar is the world's reserve currency, so we have the rare privilege among nations of being able to borrow (and then repay our debts in our own currency) – and America, at the moment -- remains a major safe haven.  But he’s adding -- reserve currency status isn't just conferred -- and it can vanish quickly when nations are irresponsible.

Message emphasized when German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, and other Europeans flatly rejected Obama's call for imitating our spending actions.

So -- it appears we now get a clearer picture of our problems from the Chinese Communist government than we get out of the White House or the Treasury. –  Congress, of course, is hopeless.

THE NEWEST 'TELTRONIC STAR' - Just A Minute Radio for Friday 03-20-09

            Howdy –

If you tried to watch the markets this week it was like being caught in a Laundromat watching five washers go to it at once. And if you read some of the blogs and “letters” columns on the Internet… you could get real scared for the future not only of the economy but of the Nation.

That’s why the safest thing to do is of a spiritual and eternal nature – not of a temporal or ‘just for today’ attitude. That attitude is a bucket full of holes.

The options for future government actions that will actually work in the reasonably near term seem to actually move away rather than improve chances for recovery. That sounds awfully pessimistic – and I’m writing in the dead, vast and middle of the night (to borrow a Shakespearian phrase) which doesn’t recommend an improved outlook.

But I do expect the sun to come up over the eastern horizon in the morning – and I know God is still on the throne of the Universe HE created. So I have every reason to be confident both for the short and the long run. That’s not going to be true for everyone. And those are the factors that are out of *our* control – but not God’s.

Last evening I saw a representation of Moses…a one man dramatic production by a good friend, Doug Whitley – who makes a ministry of portraying Biblical characters. He does a good job of it – and it’s difficult. Just think of trying to cram a career that covered 120 years into about 40 minutes. You have to go from bull rushes to “almost” entering the Promised Land of Canaan after putting up with the grumbling and problems of three million people needing to pull up stakes and leave Egypt for a place of which they were not sure. It ain’t easy.

But in God’s economy *nothing* is impossible. And it’s awfully hard for mortals to recognize that. One fundamental way to keep in tune with what’s really happening is continually to refresh your mind with a daily study of Scripture.

OK… ‘nuff said for this day. Go look for the Sunrise!

PLAYIN' GAMES WITH TAXES -- Just a Minute for Wednesday 03-18-09

Howdy… Here we are in the middle of the week *again*… Ain’t progress wonderful!

Problem is we’ve suddenly got so many problems and they are coming at us faster than a swarm of yellow jackets when you run over them twice with the lawn mower… They’ll come and getcha!  Several times!

The White House is juggling a lot of problems of its own making plus others that have flown in over the transom without being forewarned. Who knew President Obama would have such trouble assembling a Treasury Department team afflicted by a seemingly endless stream of people who should know better, ignoring their taxes, on a scale that would have alarmed even the James Brothers at the crest of their train-robbing career.

Next we find the Obama Administration having vowed to close Gitmo…without ever figuring out just *where* they could putk the hardened core of criminals they have sifted through. They’ve now got a graduate school of terrorists and nowhere to park them. In addition they’ve got a burgeoning nuclear weapons potential enemy in Iran – with messed-up political and diplomatic relations with Russia; our major ally Great Britain upset with the snubbing a careless WH did to Prime Minister Gordon Brown; a threatened trade war with second largest international customer, Mexico, not to mention the continuing immigrant problems both inside and outside the country; incipient inflation and deflation because of the tangled financial market mess; all this while cutting back on defense spending at the very time China, Korea, and who knows else may be beefing up their spying and international terrorist structures.

Did we mention Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Gaza, Israel, Syria and we never even started on Africa or eastern Europe. On top of all that we launched a shuttle but barely moved the Space Station out of the way of traveling space junk and debris that threatens it as well as the Hubble telescope.

Well… nobody ever said being President was a piece of cake – and on the other hand -- nobody held a gun to the head of any candidate and forced him/her to run for the office.

PLAYIN’ GAMES WITH TAXES

BB: Jist a Minit – Mr. Jack has everbody in Georgia an South Caroliner taken leave of the’re senses?

Jack: What makes you ask Billy-Bob?

BB: Well the Demicrat Committee in Columbia’s acuseing Republican Gov. Sanford of playin games with th’ stimlous money…

Jack: Yeah?

BB: An Republican Guvnor Perdue in Georgia is upset with a bill called JOBS ta' give tax credits fer employers hirin’ new workers…

Homer: That’n passed 164 ta' 4 – and another’n ‘liminate bizness inventory taxes with a referendum.

MizP: Where’s all this cornfusion a-comin’ frum?

Jack: It’s the Obama spending bill – Governor Mark Sanford says he doesn’t think you solve a problem created by too much debt – by adding a WHOLE  LOT more debt.

BB: I buy that.

Jack: He wants $700 million of the stimulus money used to pay down debt. But gets opposition from his own party – and the President says he won’t approve it.

Homer: Whut about Georgia?

Jack: Governor Sonny Perdue has also got opposition from Republican colleagues – and they’ve all been meeting with Arthur Laffler…

MizP: Ah ‘ve heered of him… he invented the laffin’ curve…

Jack: The Laffler curve Miss Pearl – President Reagan used it to bring down interest and tax rates … business prospered.

MizP: They’s tryin’ ta' do that in Georgia?

Jack: Right…

MizP: Ah don’t see why not.

Jack: Ok – But I agree with one of the Georgia legislators who said "For some reason people in Washington seem to think that only big government spending programs can get us out of economic recession."

MizP: Ah b’leve we oughtta be gittin oursevs out.

Jack: The best idea I think is for us to ask the Lord to help us weave our way through this problem and support the people of character and honesty.

MizP:  Ah’ll vote fer that-ut!

DO SAYING AND DOING MATCH? - Just a Minute for Monday 3-16-09

            Howdy –

Washington’s permanent addiction seems to be to try and say one thing but when the light comes on or the heat gets hot – to try and do something different. Biggest example by far is the 787 Billion (with a “B”) spending bill that dumped more paper money on the market in one act than the USA spent in its entire history up to that time.

If you don’t think that’s a BIG bill to pay off… your great grandchildren will!

The permanent addiction of lawmakers, politicians and bureaucrats seems to be who can be most adept at saying one thing with fingers crossed behind the back – and doing something else entirely. The most recent example is being held up to the light by an unfortunate pastor who joined a religious advisory group organized under the GW Bush Administration – only to find assurances he was given that he would not be stepping on his moral or religious principles were trampled on within a few weeks.

You’ll find brief details in today’s audio track and script (below) and also documented by Greenville News, AP and the New York Times – all with different slants. The main difficulty is laid out in George Orwell’s classic 1984 novel when the dominant governmental offices adopt a new language called “news-speak” – whereby “War” becomes “Peace” – and “Save” really means “Spend.”  Apparently we’re entering that “Twilight Zone” now.

The only clarifying voice in all this cacophony is the calm voice coming from Scripture – to which we need each one to repair – daily.

“JUST A MINUTE”

DO SAYING AND DOING MATCH?

Just A MinuteSome were very against me being involved in this," said Taylor’s First Baptist Church Pastor, Frank Page, in a February 15th Greenville News report. Page said he felt he could play an important role in the program started under the George W. Bush Administration – adding at that time that if he was not taken seriously or … (Quote) “if I feel at some point that I'm just a token conservative, … then I will resign, because I don't have time just to be a token voice.”(Unquote)

Now comes an Associated Press story on Saturday describing the popular local pastor objecting when the President last week removed ‘conscience protections’ for medical providers and says he disagrees with Obama’s pattern of removing any pro-life protection … (Quote)I am deeply concernedI have stated that concern and will continue to state it.” (Unquote)

I fear the Pastor is joining a rather large group experiencing Mr. Obama’s on-going propensity to say one thing, and do another.

"FIND ME AN ISLAMOFACIST NEGOTIATOR! - Just A Minute Radio for Friday 03-13-09

            Hello again… IT’S FRIDAY!

The audio track today starts with a question… ‘Would you ever think we’d negotiate with Gobbles or Goering – henchmen of Hitler -- at the end of WWII?  Out of the question! The terms of surrender were ‘unconditional’ – because of the way in which the peace treaty of WW I had been ignored and all of Europe suffered.  Historians split hairs to this day over the Yalta agreements etc. etc… but I’m reading a book in which a noted British General agrees with some well respected American historians that the initiation and progress of WWII made peace negotiations unthinkable.

Yet here we are – after blood being spilt in Afghanistan – and Iraq; plus the increasing possibility of hot war hostilities if Iran will not lay by its nuclear weapons program – and President Obama, being in office only slightly more than 50 days… has proposed making nice with those who threaten so they’ll be nice to us. It’s a fool’s game.

Reading the Reagan Diaries is very enlightening in this same regard. The Russian high command, essentially ignoring their ‘civilian’ leaders respected only strength and resolution – and when they saw a lack of either they exploited it. Reagan said of the four wars that had been fought in his lifetime – that none of them were ever started because our nation was “too strong.”  So… we are seeing our national wealth squandered by ‘experts’ who seem to have lost their way – and a new set of leaders who have not cared or studied history and seemingly have never learned that those who will not study and learn from it are bound to repeat it – we trot merrily on our way ignoring all the impending signs.

I would be discouraged *except* for the many examples in history where God has intervened on the side of “His” people. And here I quote Abraham Lincoln who said it was not nearly so important to learn if God was on our side as it is to study and determine that we are on HIS side. With that, I’m in full agreement.

“JUST A MINUTE”

“FIND ME AN ISLAMOFASCIST NEGOTIATOR!”

Just A Minute – Can you imagine America negotiating with Hitler’s henchmen after WWII. It’s the current pattern of the President’s Middle East policy. Do you recall President Bush, after 9/11 saying before a joint session of Congress:

"Tonight the U.S. demands … the Taliban -- deliver … all leaders of Al-Qaida hiding in your land and immediately and permanently close every terrorist training camp in Afghanistan; … hand over every terrorist and their support structure to appropriate authorities. Give the United States full access … so we can make sure they are no longer operating." Adding … "the Taliban must act immediately [handing over] the terrorists or they will share in their fate."

Now a former adviser to the Mujahideen commander says, … "things are all going the Taliban's way. They are at the edge of Kabul" and have no incentive to switch sides.  – The Taliban spokesman reacted to President Obama's suggestion saying it is a sign Americans, after so many years fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan are now "tired and worried."

Another ‘achievement’ of the Obama Administration.

UNVEILING THE "GIFT" CZAR - Just A Minute Radio for Wed. 03-11-09

Howdy Everybody –

This Springtime weather makes us all ‘master gardeners’ at least in our dreams. But sometimes things just don’t go ‘dreamily’ – and that seems the case with the Washington scene. We keep hoping for good news – but it seems to be thinly scattered. Perhaps we’re just not seeing it through the right glasses. We do know there are certain things to be gained from adversity. Apparently we’re getting ready for a graduate-level instruction.

Mr. President Obama garnered a LOT of critical amazement from both friends and some not so friendly critics, over his treatment of the visiting British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. And the rough edges of the first 50 days in the White House have not only been showing but have managed to fray the sensibilities of some of his ardent supporters.

The passage, without reading, of monstrosities in spending legislation has happened – not without some gee & hawing on the floors of both houses of Congress. But let us not fool ourselves – the extremely poor performance of Republican legislators in the second term of the Bush Presidency forecasts terribly rough waters for the nation in the near term. We are set for an education – in the words of Proverbs – “If thou faint in the day of adversity thy strength is small…” (Prov. 24:10)

Sir Francis Bacon had some rather stirring philosophical musings that will stand in good stead: Prosperity is the blessing of the Old Testament; Adversity the blessing of the New. And…adversity doth best discover virtue.” So possibly we are set for a ‘severe mercy’ from the hand of the Lord – a blessing in a difficult to recognize garb.

Let us learn our lessons without complaint and take HIS instruction from HIS hand of loving favor.

Cordially, IN HIM

SHALL WE SERVE THAT WITH HOT SAUCE? - Just A Minute Radio for 03-04-09 Wednesday

Howdy… It’s almost half way through the week.

And the Senate is in a dither… the spending plan needs to be passed by Friday or the government shuts down. Hmmm – maybe not such a bad idea. More and more the talk in the Senate Finance Committee’s hearing room seems to center on the question of just how much money can we borrow anyway?  Chairman Bernake does not seem to know – We’ve never borrowed this much before, he says.

Like we’ve said… we’re in uncharted waters… perhaps over our head. At least the markets so far don’t seem to be able to touch bottom.

Are we just ‘riding it down’ or ‘waiting for the *best* time to buy?’ Nobody – including the experts – seems to know. A good friend sent me a quote by Winston Churchill – the WWII Prime Minister of Great Britain that says: “To think we can spend (tax) ourselves out of recession, is like a man standing in a bucket thinking he can lift himself by the handle.” Makes sense to me.

All the economics I see from example and from study, seems to show America is on a collision course with reality. There may not be enough pieces to pick up.  Best to recall this:

” Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God. (Psalm 20:5-7)

“JUST A MINUTE”

SHALL WE SERVE THAT WITH HOT SAUCE?

BB:  Jist A Minit – Mr. Jack – Ah heered a ‘splosian come’ frum th’ Senate chamber.

Homer: Ah heered a BIG litnin’ strike when hit was a-snowin’ Sunday nite.

Jack: That was just a warm up for the real thing, Homer.

MizP: Well whut was hit, Mr. Jack?

Jack: It was Senator McCain hitting the ceiling – twice.

BB: What was a-goin’ on?

Jack: Senator McCain told the Senators what was on his mind. Specifically he told Senator Inouye from Hawaii he wasn’t at

all approving of his two million dollar earmark to promote astronomy in Hawaii.

BB: Not good, huh?

Jack: Really not good.

Homer: Whut else did he say?

Jack: He gave two speeches back to back.

MizP: Like a double barrel full of buckshot?

Jack: You can say that again. He shook the rafters …

Homer: So whut did he say?

Jack: Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank caught the speech and laid it out in yesterday’s paper, noting Republican Senator Cochran of Mississippi – ranking Republican on the appropriation Committee supported the bill  -- That fired off McCain’s fuse …

MizP: Sounds like thangs got hot.

Jack: McCain pounded his desk and said: “There’s three kinds of Congressmen: Republicans, Democrats and appropriators.”

BB: He was a-swattin’ in ever direction.

Jack: “I want to freely acknowledge Republicans are guilty of this as well,” McCain said and his buddies said Old Mack was back in full fury.

MizP: Well hit makes me angry ta' heer of spendin’ 1.7 billion for researchin’ pig odor  in I-o-way…

Homer: How ‘bout 6.6 million for termite research –

MizP: Or $607 thousand fer tattoo removal  --

Homer:  $951, thousand fer sustainable Las Vegas.

BB: Whut in th’ worl does ‘at mean?  Jack: I don’t know – but maybe by next week we can find out.  I’m Jack Buttram. (END)

TAKE A PEEK INTO THE FUTURE - Just A Minute Radio for Monday 03-02-09

Howdy on an icy or slushy day…

And we thought we’d get through the winter without snow… Well we almost made it. Hope your feet are still dry. Maybe we’re on the way to refilling the lakes and reservoirs. But one thing *nobody knows* just what we are headed for is the scope of the problems this massive borrowing in order to ‘spend our way out of depression’ is going to entail.

It only takes a little browsing amongst some international papers or magazines to hear the plaintive wails from Europe and Asia about *their* financial and economic problems – plus their caterwauling that America is the villain that has brought the world to this precipitous place. One thing of which I’m sure…there’s enough blame to go ‘round even to the fact that the various electorates of representative governments have to be reminded from time to time that the populace eventually gets the kind of government it deserves because of its preferences, inattention, or addiction to wanting too much indulgence without paying the price.

Americans for sure can’t run everybody’s country – but when it comes to electing our proper representation – we have no one to blame but ourselves for the failures of our elected officials. If we will seek higher character standards for ourselves – and *also* require them of those who wish to represent us and our values we will have better government. If, on the other hand we are lax or too busy to bother… that will show up in the kind of government we end up *deserving.*  If you’d like a short course with many examples – take up your Bible and the book of Judges. If you were to graph Israel’s situation it would look like a run-away roller coaster. That’s not because God didn’t love them or take care of them – to the contrary:

And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul. (PS 106:15 )

Sometimes we want what *we* want when we want it… and it’s not the best for us. God wants to bless us – but HE also wants to give us what HE knows is best and best for us. That’s not greed.  And greed, selfishness, hoggin’ th’ trough – is what got America into the mess we’re in today. The sooner we realize it – the sooner we can find our way out of the thicket with God’s blessing.

“JUST A MINUTE”

TAKE A PEEK INTO THE FUTURE

Just A Minute“Just saying it -- doesn’t make it so!” that phrase has a major objective truth to it.

The ‘stimulus package’ – recently renamed the “recovery plan” – promises new jobs will soon be ‘created – First promise was for two million … then three point five million and now more than four… but unemployment totals are escalating too.

This weekend I spent several hours examining Russia’s plight. It’s far worse than ours. Newsweek quotes, Vitaly Polishuk, window-frame maker in Magnitogorsk, a company steel town, who used to take comfort from the sight of the steel mills' smoke-belching chimneys. "We could see our breadwinner breathing," he says but now half the chimneys in town are idle. "When the smoke disappears, fear comes," says Polishuk. Russia has about 1500 monotowns in similar straits. The Kremlin, fears all its troops and ‘recovery plans’ will fall short of controlling angry people when they take to the streets.

America, is now betting the farm on promises of the Obama Administration. We’d best pray!
