DIRE PREDICTIONS FROM THE LEFT - Just a Minute for Tuesday May 13, 2008

Hi Folks –

West Virginians go to the polls today in the next chapter of the long march to November. Perhaps Fall will come early this year – but Spring has just gotten started!

There’s dire news from the left. Susan Estrich, who is often on both CNN and FOX giving us the leftward line – is predicting a negative tidal wave will overrun the GOP effort… and to make her case she cites Willie Horton – of the Mike Dukakis campaign.  The man who Gov. Dukakis through his weekend release campaign got released long enough to rape a woman during his brief freedom – and who set the nation’s political attitude that year.  Pollsters say – according to Ms Estrich, that the “right track vs wrong track” numbers are the best predictors of winning or losing in the presidential primaries. And since right now there is an 80 percent agreement they say that America is on the wrong track it’s virtually inevitable the GOP will lose no matter what.

Unduly pessimistic is my first reaction… but on reflection, I think she has something even if it is not pronounced in mellifluous tones. I fear the ‘cloud on the horizon no bigger than a man’s hand.’ At the same time … it’s a long wait till November… Let’s get on with the lawn mowing and gardening before we start piling up dead leaves.

Below is the script for today…and right under it the link to the sound track if you’d care to hear it again or send it to someone.

All the best… IN HIM

“JUST A MINUTE”

THEY’RE HERE AGAIN

Just A Minute – Susan Estrich, one of my least favorite TV voices – who’s been a Democrat operative for years, says she sees on the horizon a cloud the size of a man’s hand – portending a black day for Republicans. She’s comparing Massachusetts Gov. Mike Dukakis’ losing presidential bid with a likely match up between Obama and McCain. She sees a tidal wave drowning McCain.

Her pessimism derives from hearing pollsters say “right track vs. wrong track” numbers tend to be the very best predictors of victory when those feelings show up early and strong. She says today’s polls show 80 percent of the country think America is on the “wrong” track and believes even a well-oiled and effective campaign won’t change the result.

She was a Dukakis advisor when the infamous Willie Horton case arose about a convicted murderer who raped a woman while out on a weekend Dukakis sanctioned furlough. When Dukakis tried to defend it, his campaign stalled. The onrushing negative wave may drown McCain

I fear she may be right.

ARE WE THERE YET? - JAM for Monday 5-12-08

Howdy Folks…

It’s Monday again… and the race for the Democrat nomination for President is still singing its mournful song. This time it rings through the crags and hollers of that “Almost Heaven” state of West Virginia.

Several things relevant to the primary voting on Tuesday: 1) We know there are lots of Democrats. Senator Robert C. Byrd can testify to that – the longest serving Congressional member. 2. The Afro-American minority population is quite small – Census figures provide that information. 3. Actually neither the popular vote nor the super delegates assigned there will do much either way other than provide more talking points for each side.

Hillary is practically snowed under by the media landslide that has developed since last week calling for her to pull out. The most vocal supporter for her staying in I read on the Internet since last week has been James Taranto, Editor of the Online Opinion Journal of the Wall Street Journal. He sees no reason for her to leave although I’d have to say he would not normally be counted among her supporters. He just thinks the contrast of viewpoints is healthy. Don’t look for any decisions to be made on Tuesday.

The script for today’s JUST A MINUTE and the audio track are just below.

Thanks for being here.

Cordially, IN HIM

“JUST A MINUTE”

WATCHMAN WHAT OF THE NIGHT?

Just A Minute – St. Luke writes In Acts Chapter 27 verse 29, of those on an ill-fated sea voyage to Rome…(quote) ”They cast four anchors out of the stern and wished for the day...” That sums up what Democrats are thinking.

Reports I’ve gotten say the end game is a mess and not likely to get better anytime soon. Earliest would be maybe June 3rd worst; would a scrap in the Denver credentials committee, or maybe even an old-fashioned floor fight.

My guess is Bill & Hillary didn’t “loan” eleven million bucks out of their own safe to a campaign they planned to lose. Then there’s always the “possibility” (we won’t say ‘hope’) a meteorite might fall or a propitious ‘train wreck’ would happen – not to wish it of course – but to my mind that’s why the Clintons are still in the race.

Remember, Johnnie Edwards was saying twenty-four hours before he withdrew he would be in it to the very end. Somehow you just can’t always figure political speech will be entirely accurate.

Third attempt to get the JAM NOTICE right for 05-09-08

Hi [patient] folks…

Sorry to be cluttering up your mailbox… I’ve just had difficulty sending information to the server. Part of the fault is mine for inattention and interruptions. And part of it I just can’t fathom.

BUT… Today’s program deals with the NC Court of Appeals reversal of a previous decision that maintained parents’ say in where their children go to school. The Court of Appeals went directly opposed to statutory wording in the NC code and OK’d year round schools in Wake County saying parents (or students for that matter) had no right to a nine month school term, even though the law specifies the opposite. Another example I fear of the ‘divine right of judges’ apparently. One you’ll want to be on the lookout for.

Here are links to the audio and script sites for your use. (I tried unsuccessfully to make a change – perhaps next week.)

http://www.jebcovoice.net/scripts/jamt05-09-08.doc

And below is today’s script.

Cordially, IN HIM

Jack

“JUST A MINUTE”

THE SCHOOLS WILL BE A-CHANGIN’

Just A Minute – Schools in North Carolina are being put on notice to expect change, according to Kristen Blair of the North Carolina Education Alliance.

Should parents be key players in year-round school assignment decisions? Not according to a ruling by the North Carolina Court of Appeals.
On Tuesday, the North Carolina Court of Appeals ruled that the Wake County Public School System does not need to obtain parents’ permission before moving kids to year-round schools.

This week’s ruling marginalizes parents ignoring (quote) “express and clear statutory language,” says the Locke Foundation’s legal analyst, Daren Baskt. North Carolina statute specifies (quote) “there shall be operated in every local school administrative unit a uniform school term of nine months.” Based on the appellate court’s interpretation of the North Carolina Constitution, however, students do not have a “right to a uniform nine-month term.”

So the simple court answer is: sooner or later parents will just sit on the sidelines and send their kids to wherever the school board says. Hmmm -- sounds like a real democracy.

PARTY CLOUDY ON WHAT TO DO -- JUST A MINUTE FOR THURS. 5/8/08

Hi folks –

We keep thinking we may get to the end of this someday – and I’m sure we will – but they keep putting it off, and off, and off. Hillary and Bill have loaned themselves some more bucks to keep the home fires burning. I think West Virginia is the next go round… and that ought to be Hill’s hill, with all her union friends. But then Indiana was supposed to be hers by a big margin but the boys at the polling desk missed it by a lot. Apparently absentee ballots and being close to Chicago were worrisome factors hard to figure. So flippin’ a coin might have gotten you more accuracy.

In any case it’s all supposed to come to a road show finale by June 3.  And now a governor is proposing a convention before the convention so the super delegates can caucus and vote and maybe not have the blood on the floor they think might happen in Denver.  Who knows?

Here are links about the NC and IN votes:

“JUST A MINUTE”

THE PICTURE’S STILL CLOUDY

Just A Minute – Obama by a nose? A very thin maybe.

His victory in North Carolina mikes it “almost impossible,” according to the Wall St. Journal, for Mrs. Clinton to win the popular vote before primaries end on June Third. Plus half the Democrat voters think she’s dishonest or untrustworthy because of Travelgate, Filegate, Whitewater-gate and others, eroding her credibility. Therefore, her flaws get in the way of talking about his flaws.

Obama’s problems center on white working class voters. He won big time with blacks – 95 percent – but got only 38 percent of white Democrats and 42 percent of independents.  That may wins in the South but not the rest of the country. For instance in Gary and Indianapolis, he lost white Democrats to Hillary 65 to 35 percent. Beyond that 66 percent, Democrats in both states. say they will be uncomfortable with Obama.

If it were baseball, we’re just out of spring training – so the big battle isn’t yet. But these battin’ averages hang a heavy cloud over the rest of the season.

WHAT ABOUT A PHOTO FINISH? Just a Minute File for Tuesday 5-6 -08 -- Off to the races!

Hi There…

Big *important* races today, if the pundits have it right… Results on tonight. But they still won’t be definitive – at least it would be a surprise if they were. So that means we *still* have the hang-fire race for the Democrat nomination for President on our news channels. Yawn – yawn.  Everybody is getting tired. Hillary is getting horse – and Obama keeps trying to unglue Rev. Mr. Wright from his would be transcendent person – but it looks like a struggle fit for Ulysses. The furor dies down and Wright or somebody digs out another skeleton and the pot is boiling again. Super delegates all in a stew.

Today’s minute is about the Kentucky Derby and Madam Hillary’s suggested bet. Did it do her any good or ill?

Here are links for listening and commenting.

“JUST A MINUTE”

WILL WE HAVE A PHOTO FINISH?

Just A Minute – I’m not a horse race fan but this Internet report perhaps illuminates the political ‘horse races’ going on today in Indiana and North Carolina. Experts in both say it’s too close to call; it’ll be a photo finish. But this season has its surprises.

Hillary Clinton got her bets down for the Kentucky Derby when she suggested: “… bettors might be smart to wager a little money on the filly.” That would have been Eight Belles, [spelled belles] the lone female in the race. The AP reported the filly finished second, “then collapsed with two broken front ankles and was euthanized after crossing the wire.” There were many tears in the stands as the handlers tended the injured animal.

The most useful thought arises from the prisoner Paul’s words to the Philippians: “Be anxious for nothing but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God, and the peace of God that passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 4:6,7)

JUST A MINUTE - SOMBODY SAY GLOBAL COOLING? 5-5-08

Hi Again… it’s Monday – Hoo Ray! (Or is it RAH?)

Anyway – here we go on something besides first quality politics – this is second quality – Environment: specifically the Global Environment. It seems science would be divided on it – if the Darwinians weren’t so desperately afraid of Intelligent Design. If you haven’t seen Ben Stein’s film “EXPELLED” you’re going to be seriously handicapped in water cooler conversation category. You ought to see it. Ben was in the speech writing stable of the Reagan White House and has a dead pan sense of humor that cuts to the bone – Which he has done masterfully in the film. He asks Dr. Richard Dawkins and others of that persuasion and you see the up front agenda of those scientists – to silence those with a different viewpoint. Today’s program for only one minute deals with that issue.

Here are links to listen and the response line is below next to ‘comments.’

“JUST A MINUTE”

PASS THE ICE CUBES SOMEBODY

Just A Minute – If you haven’t heard of William Grey it’s because Al Gore has been hogging the bandwidth.

See, a funny thing happened on the way to the earth’s heat-up party… it cooled.  Or at least that’s the story from the Leibniz Marine Sciences in Kiel Germany. They think the facts bear out the idea the earth is likely to go through a decade of global cooling because of “currents that move heat around the world and vary from decade to decade.”

Ben Stein and his movie “Expelled” showing the scientific establishment’s bias against anything they don’t agree with, is making people who don’t agree with them, uncomfortable, like seasick.

William Grey, is the leading Hurricane Forecaster of the National Weather Service but the Gore crowd is so wedded to global warming – they want Dr. Grey expelled because while he is recognized as the premier hurricane forecaster in the country, he’s expressed doubts about ‘global warming,’ and Stein’s movie showed if the facts dispute your scientific conclusions, progressive, leftist scientists, drop the facts in favor of what they believe

BIG CHINA HAS BIG PAINS -- JAM files for 05-02-08

Howdy Folks…

For the second day in a row the big news (not the Obama-Wright story) comes out of China. Labor pains are growing epidemic especially in the south where manufacturing is heaviest.  And apparently the government labor department is vastly understaffed to handle the crisis. There are some details in today’s story. Plus news from the people who keep track of such things reveal China is building a huge new submarine facility – which will make all her neighbors dependent upon shipping nervous. That’ll be true of the US too. So… tune in today and see what can be learned.

Here are links for listening to the one minute broadcast… or for those who know how (and I don’t) to listen on RSS (Real Simple Syndication) I understand the one minute track is available there too. Load it on your I-pod for those who know about such things.  And we have texts you can print out for those of you in the Gutenberg era like me:

“JUST A MINUTE”

CHINA HAS LABOR PANGS

Just A MinuteGEOFFREY CROTHALL, Wall Street Journal writer, says China’s current upsurge in labor problems and its lack of resources to enforce labor laws means:  Beijing's dream of creating a ‘harmonious society’ will remain an illusion.”

Crothall reports there were over five thousand labor violations filed in Guangdong province the first two months of this year; more than the entire year of 2001. The government labor department – is vastly understaffed resulting in shuttering of more than ten thousand factories in the province -- home to a huge part of China’s manufacturing base.

Add to that the revelation of a new giant submarine base built on China’s southernmost island of Hainan able to house 14 or more 094 subs, -- it gives Pentagon planners the willies.

My college roommate who became the headmaster at a missionary institute in Taiwan, once told me, “China is such a vast country almost anything you hear from there is probably true sometime, somewhere.” The Asian giant has giant problems – which sooner or later are headed our way.
