NYTWRITER TAKE ON "Chick -Fil-A" -- Just A Minute Radio for Friday 110204

Can’t decide whether to believe the WX forecaster or not…?

‘Tis truly tricky this time of year. Supposedly old man Winter is half-way through his bag of tricks… but woe be to the one who – thinking his cap is unnecessary on such a lovely morning – goes out in the as yet dark dawn to find he should have worn his ‘wig-warmer’.

Today’s JUST A MINUTE deals with what I suspect is a load of bias – but having no concrete clue except that the lady lives with a female partner and neither has a husband although they are sharing the duties of raising a daughter – and the one in today’s spotlight is identified by other bloggers… not those of the NYT – as one who supports same sex marriage, wears a wedding band although there’s no discernable male in the limited view we have – and there’s no sense in tracking it down except to see if the writer has a ‘hidden’ bias on the subject. So… we’ll let that pass …

Speaking of ‘hidden’ bias I’ll plead guilty to knowing all five of my grandchildren in one family living nearby, have all worked – some are still working – for Chick-Fil-A…and they have been treated quite well.  For one thing they’ve learned how to be on time, and get the work done according to instructions.  They’ve also gotten some scholarship help from that company – and they get Sundays off *every* weekend so the family can (or could before they started on their own paths) go to church together on the weekends.  That’s very nice and accommodating for families.  I commend Mr. Cathy and his two sons who began their national chain over 60 years ago.  (They still have room to grow… last count they were at something slightly over 1530 stores… two more due to open up soon) and holding to their operating philosophy.  That’s encouraging.

What’s not encouraging is the publicity surrounding this NYT story that came out in the Jan 29th paper… and stirred up a needless tempest. I think The young Mr. Cathy who did the video on FB… was spot on handling the unnecessary tempest.  We’ve got enough ‘bad’ news out of the Middle East without generating a foolish one from Georgia.  What is the Cathy Clan to be accused of… letting families get together more often?  Being unkind to cows who don’t know how to spell?

Well… time to put out the light for writing this tonight… See you by next week when we’ll let Egypt push Washington off the front pages and the TV screens in favor of squeezing bits of news out of Cairo.  Looks like we’re going to get the usual run around when the strong-man (dictator) gets run aground…Once more we’ve let our international good-will go to pot while we try to break in an inexperienced President.

Just remember the old slogan.  “Don’t make the same mistake twice… There are too many NEW ones to make!”

“JUST A MINUTE”

NYT WRITER TAKES ON Chick-fil-A

Just a Minute: - Ms. Kim Severson --  the New York Times Atlanta bureau chief and Food writer, in January spotlighted Chick-fil-A restaurants – over fifteen hundred of them -- in 39 states expecting next year to sell about $39 billion worth of fried chicken. The Georgia based company founded in 1946 – attracted the Times attention because they close on Sundays and espouse a corporate philosophy aiming (quote) “to glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us.”

Ms. Severson, a 43 old Midwesterner author, has climbed the newspaper ladder writing about crime as well as food. She’s has worked in Palin country for the Anchorage Daily News plus seven years for the San Francisco Chronicle.

Dan Cathy says at  Chick-fil-A everyone is sincerely welcomed and the company -- which awards scholarships, was simply responding to a local Pennsylvania request to supply chicken and brownies for a Family Life Seminar.  However, the company’s generosity and philosophy attracted critical attention from The Times and an outspoken local group supporting same-sex marriage.
